LOLOL you just said KT could beat out Mond
When you're done playing with the L & O keys, try taking a look at what Mond did his first games vs P5 teams with significant playing time (in his case as the starter, getting all the starter reps, and compare that to KT who came into the Egg Bowl as the backup, then against a good Louisville team in a bowl game we prepped for without benefit of the coaching staff KT had played for all up until that point.
I'll give you a hint. In Mond's first, he completed 17.6% of his passes with 0 TD's and a QBR of 31 vs a ****** UCLA team. Mond's 2nd vs P5 was vs another ****** team...UPig. Although his stats were better, he still completed a lower % of his passes vs them than KT did vs a much better Louisville.
Mond had a decent year last year, but he was also in his 2nd full season as the starter, getting all those starter reps, etc. Mond's first year as a starter was poor, with a ton of aTm fans calling for him to be replaced. He completed just 51.5% on the season. Now look at KT's only other game as a starter...the first of the JoMO era. It was clear as day that Joe had decided we were gonna pass a ton, no matter what, vs a team with no chance to beat us. Despite KT averaging 10.9 YPC in that game, Joe had him run just 10 times vs 31 pass attempts.
Those 31 pass attempts represent 40% of KT's pass attempts in all 3 games he played combined. That game was also his lowest completion % by far, so it brought his overall passing stats down significantly. Hardly seems fair to judge him harshly for that. For that matter, that one game represented 30% of KT's pass attempts for every game he's played in his college career combined. Again I say, it seems overly harsh to judge the kid's potential as a passer based in large part on his performance in a single game that should be looked at skeptically. 31 pass attempts vs 10 rush attempts in Joe's first game is an outlier.
The idea that KT, if given the same opportunity as Mond was given, would have no chance at all to beat out Mond by next season is something I just have to disagree with. Mond has one not very good year as a starter and one good one. Let's see how he does this year to see if he's just gotten better with practice, or if last year was his high-water mark.
Sometimes it boils down to luck and opportunity. Had Tony Romo not got injured again, nobody is talking about what a great selection Dak was for the Cowboys.
ETA - In Dak's first two complete games vs P5 teams he didn't do so well either, completing 41.2 and 53.6% in 2 losses. Guess we're fortunate the coaching staff didn't use those games to decide Dak could never be an SEC-caliber QB. I'm not saying KT would be the next Dak...just that some of you are way too quick to pull the trigger.
