I don't think he's scared of competition. He didn't win the job. Why would he stay?

Transfers are now the norm in college football.

Mississippi State QB Keytaon Thompson has entered the NCAA transfer portal, per source.

Former four-star recruit. Was Nick Fitzgerald’s backup last year. Comes one day after Mississippi State named Tommy Stevens its starting QB

Obviously he thinks he can't win it next year either. He's probably going to miss a year of playing either way. One by having to sit out or one by not being good enough. (assuming he goes D1)

He was never going to start here. GS is our 2020 QB and everyone knows it. Best of luck to him.

He can redshirt this year. He was on the outside looking in with Shrader on deck. I’m guessing Mayden leaves too.

Be interesting to see where he ends up. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Kansas mentioned.

I don't blame him. He can sit out this year then still have two years somewhere else. I don't know that he's an SEC caliber passer, but I think he could do well at a C-USA or Sun Belt type of place, maybe a Big 12 school.

There are rumors that Mayden is one of the suspended. If so, I'm not sure we can redshirt Shrader now. He's the backup now and likely the starter next year.

Mayden is one of the ones missing 8 games. That’s an NCAA punishment that will follow him wherever he goes. I don’t see him bolting just yet....he might as well serve that penalty while he’s buried on the depth chart, then try his luck in the Spring against Shrader. Worst case is he is 2nd string in 2020 with 3 years of eligibility left.

Exactly. We brought in a better player & his chances of starting next year looked 50-50 (maybe not even that good). Hope he lands at a school he can get playing time.

Yeah....let's hope Stevens doesn't get hurt. That's probably the case in several positions with all the suspensions.

Saw that coming. That qb depth not looking so good anymore for this year. Really bad next year with possible rs freshman or sophomore starting. Mayden will probably transfer if it’s Shrader next season. Just not good outlook. If Thompson leaves before before this season before drop date. He could transfer and still redshirt somewhere else. If Thompson leaves before or during season, then we have a true fresh and rumored to be suspended redshirt freshmen as backups. Hope Stevens stays healthy.

Why should he delay the decision since the decision has already been made...he's been a good bulldog...can now plan for his future somewhere else. wish him the best. Having said, that hope Stevens is absolutely head and shoulders better...for all concerned

I always hate to see players leave. KT gave it everything he had when he got the chance and it didn’t work out.

Name the last QB transfer to leave and show out at the next place....Tiano, Staley, Favre no bueno.

We always think our back up QB is the next great thing. Excluding Dak it’s never come to fruition.

I wish KT well and hope he tears it up, but once Mullen left it just wasn’t a good fit for him here.

I almost never hate to see players leave. Players usually leave because we’ve brought in better players and they see the writing in the wall. I don’t blame Thompson for leaving & wish him well. He gave us 2 good years & I appreciate it.

Can he enter the portal and end up staying, if no one picks him up?

I understand him wanting to leave and do what’s best for him, I just figured he’d wait till the end of the season. I kinda feel like he’s running away with his tail between his legs. Call it what you want, he’s abandoning the team.

But, he didn’t commit to Moorhead’s offense and I’m sure he was upset when TS got here. He was thinking it was gonna be his team. Seems like a good dude, wish him the best.

Honestly

I am still wondering how a former 4 star couldn’t beat out a former high school TE 2 years ago.***

2 years ago, the coach awarded playing time based on how long you’ve been here. Last year was a different story.

I agree. I’ve never understood why anyone would want a guy to stay when it isn’t a good fit. Some people just have the mentality that since 4-5 years in Starkville was good enough for them, it should be good enough for everybody.

I wish him well. I hope Mayden doesn't transfer too. A few wins will fix the team morale. Morals I'm not sure about tho. I was hoping to see some tricky 2 quarterback sets myself but oh well. These sanctions hurt pretty bad but surely could have been much worse. Hail State

It will be very interesting to see how much interest he gets and also to see how well he does at another school

The thing that does kinda suck is we can likely no longer redshirt Shrader. He’s now #2 on the depth chart with Mayden out for the suspension, and was probably ahead of Mayden even without that consideration.

I think he can bee a good QB at a G5 school. If I'm Southern Miss, I'm making a phone call.

I’ve heard GS is one of the suspended, not much of Mayden. Makes matters worse IMO.

Tell me this is a joke. I’d really hope a kid that graduated from a $18k a year private school could get through his freshman year without an assist...but, he is probably very tied up with all that trim.
