This was a formality the day he signed here. Let’s hope he’s the real deal.

If he was the real deal, he wouldn't have been facing yet another year as the back-up at Penn State. He has a better grasp of the offense and is a better passer than KT. I will wait to get excited.

This is a Rebel narrative. Stevens would have started at Penn State. Much of their fanbase was pretty upset that he left. He saw a golden opportunity to play for his old coach and pounced.

He's gonna be fine.

you dont bring a guy like this in to be a backup. sucks for kt, but i think this move might work out for the better and its a long season. kt may have his chance sooner rather than later depending on how things go.

Reading between the lines, he transferred because Franklin wasn't honest with him multiple times, not because it was imminent he wasn't going to win the starting job.

If he is just a halfway decent passer then our offense will be improved from the last three years. We don’t need the guy to be a Heisman candidate, just need him to make teams respect our passing game enough so that Kylin and the running game have room to breathe.

Yes, exactly. We don't need him running 90% of the time, or throwing wild incompletions.

And a big part of why they didn't name him the starter is because he had a nagging injury that they were cautious about. Not because he wasn't a better qb

Don't get me wrong. I am very happy to have Stevens and I am happy he won the starting job. I think he will be a major upgrade as a passer and as a decision maker over Fitz last season. Maybe I am reading too much into the words "real deal." I expect him to be competent at running this offense and hope he will be more than that.

This isn't correct.Franklin is onr ecord as having said if Tommy shows he is healthy then he will be the starter. This comment was made the week they went into spring practice.Tommy tried to transfer as a Soph ,he just didn't fit well with Franklin for whatever reason.

How exactly do you know this?

Because he missed all of spring practice with an injury? That’s not exactly an inside scoop, it’s been well documented. He was named the starter before the spring, then got hurt and missed all of the spring and it wasn’t a sure thing anymore.

I have no idea how they compare, but Stevens was absolutely the starter before missing spring practice. That’s straight from James Franklin’s mouth.

Do a little research and read a few articles and you will see how I came up with that statement. They still have not named a starter at Penn State so read into that fact what you will. I don't know how good he will be but I do feel he may be the one of the best we have had in a long time. And I hope Shrader is even better. We will all have to wait and see how things go

Maybe. I hope so. At least as good tho. But I could be wrong of course but I have high expectations. I think the offense will be much improved.

Yep, nor does a guy come here with his last chance as a college QB if he thinks he’s competing for a job. I’m sure that Moorhead let him know that he couldn’t come here and 17 around, but this has been Tommy’s job to lose the day he announced he was coming here.

Anyone thinking that there was any legit competition is just being naive

Well sports is about competition and if you can’t

Handle that it’s on you. Stevens has been a model citizen, said and done all the right things whereas we have 10 probably 12 selfish *** holes that have not. I would prefer kT stay but I wish him well and thank him for his contributions to our great university. KT has had discipline issues so let’s keep it real here folks. Time to circle the wagons and go with the tru maroons.

Not buying this at all. There are a few things that could have made Tommy choose us that did not involve a guarantee to start "if he didn't 17 around":

1. We did not have a returning starter
2. Our most likely heir-apparent did not have a great pass completion % and was less familiar with Joe's system than was Tommy
3. Tommy would not have to learn and succeed in a new offense under an unfamiliar coach in his one and only year remaining

These are the only reasons a confident, talented QB, unafraid of competition and willing to earn his shot, would need to come here. No guarantee needed. I'm sure he had other options, but I doubt any of them...even any that offered to name him the starter, were as good as ours. No doubt Tommy still harbors notions of getting a shot in pro ball. Being the guaranteed starter on some other team where he'd need time to learn the system, coaches, etc would have been a poor choice.

Looked at logically, we were the slam-dunk best choice for him, even without a guarantee to start. Nothing naive in that at all, whether Joe did in fact give him assurances or not.

Now that TS is our starter, I'm behind him 100%. But you can't call out KT for not being able to handle competition because he wants to transfer without insinuating the same thing about Tommy. Only difference is, KT wants to transfer away from us, while Tommy transferred from Penn State.
