We played at Mizzou in 2015 just curious as to how the schedule broke that way since you are supposed to rotate every 6 years with East opponents.

To make the home and road work out, it's not a straight 6-year rotation. It's a 5-year / 7-year rotation. So, we play Missouri in 2015, 2020, 2027, 2032. Of course, odds the rotations won't be changed by 2027 are probably pretty low.

Ah yes that makes more sense. Could be a 9th conference game added at some point too.

People have been talking about a 9th game for years, but it looks like there is zero interest from the coaches and ADs to add another game. The issue has been dead from the beginning and is even deader now than it was then.

Yeah, it seems any chance of that went out the window when we added the requirement to play one P5 school per year.

If we ever expand to 16 teams, I think that reopens the possibility, though.

The P5 requirement is a much better deal for everyone than a 9th SEC game would have been. I don't think we'll be expanding to 16 teams any time soon, and doubt there would be any real reason to go to 9 games even if we did.

Well crap. If I'd realized who it was, I wouldn't have bothered replying.

Shouldn't a "journalist" from a "reputable" publication know where the game is and how the schedule works?

I agree with this. It's hard to argue against it. The SEC grind (put simply, we have more quality teams, which earns national respect), more wins, more bowl games, more money. The only argument I've seen against it is the season ticket holder's entertainment. Most teams play the P5 OOC, the FCS, and two teams like Southern Miss or Memphis. The only really bad one there is the FCS, and I think we as fans can get over that one game.

I don't think that's really even a good argument. Even ignoring that a 9th SEC game would typically be much harder than a Power5 OOC game, I'd still rather play the Power5 OOC game simply because I like new matchups against respectable opponents. I like the Arizona and Arizona St. games. I'm not as crazy about the NC St game, but it's still a good game. Even if one or both of those opponents end up being trash when we play them, you'll never hear me complaining about beating up on a **** Power 5 team. We've been the **** Power 5 team or gotten unlucky catching a team on an up cycle (Oregon, W. Va., and Ga Tech all looked like much different matchups when we scheduled them; even caught Houston on an upswing).

I also think we have done a good job of managing our schedule to keep some semi-interesting G5 games. I think playing teams like Memphis, USM, Tulane, and La Tech are more interesting than playing UMass or New Mexico. For example, in 2023, if nobody backs out, we'll play Arizona and Southern Miss in Starkville in addition to an FCS then play Tulane in New Orleans. SO we get what is traditionally a manageable Power5 game, and then two semi-local G5 games, including one in New Orleans. That's a fun schedule to me. That is a year with Bama and LSU at home, and those years have traditionally been dangerous because of the likelihood of having two sure losses at home, and an OOC loss can make an already difficult year that much harder, but can't do anything about that through OOC scheduling.

Aren’t Saban and Byrne proponents of a ninth conference game?

How's that working out for them? There weren't even any rumors of adding a 9th game this summer for the first time in years. Saban also says he wants to play 12 games vs P5 opponents and then goes out and schedules Duke, New Mexico St., Southern Miss and Western Carolina OOC, so I would take what he says with a grain of salt.

Not sure that there is “zero interest” in the concept.

But you be you.

Well, you can take it to the bank that MSU, UK, Vandy, Ark, and Umiss would get screwed on scheduling by the SEC if they went to 9 SEC games. The 9th game would probably always be a road game for MSU, giving 4 home games and 5 Road games annually just to screw us.

Year 1 in a 9 game schedule for MSU.****

Home: Kentucky, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Missouri/Vandy

Away: LSU, Georgia, Auburn, Alabama, A&M.

I’d sooner get another P5 game than SEC game. We should just stop the FCS games. With attendance going down it might help

Problem is, without the FCS game, it's almost impossible to get 7 home games every year. Plus, it's a big money maker for the FCS programs. Ever since Templeton was "retired", Byrne, Stricklin and Cohen have done an outstanding job with football scheduling. We don't need to change a thing.
