Where can you do good/decent Bass fishing around Jackson without a boat? I got a 9 yo thats eaten up with fishing right now. We go to the Rez, but just end up catching a small catfish.

Any good spots or lakes around that don't require a boat?

Sucks. Fishing around Jackson without a boat, that is. My suggestion, find someone with access to a private lake and beg.

I used to have moderate luck up on the north end of the Rez along highway 43, I haven’t been since my oldest has been born, so that isn’t exactly an up-to-date report.

Raymond has a lake, might be called Raymond lake next to eagle ridge golf course.

Lake hico doesn’t get fished much

I’m not sure if fishing is even allowed at Hico. Even if it is, I’m not sure that’s a part of Jackson that you’d be real comfortable fishing in.

I work in that area. My opinion would be that the potential risk isn’t worth the reward in that area. The northern side of Lake Hico isn’t too bad, but on the southern side, I wouldn’t rule anything out. Def wouldn’t take my son down there.

Have you tried the spillway? Strippers bite at first light. Also, the low head dam below Lefleur's Bluff/Mays Lake, take bug spray, lots and lots of bug spray. Pelahatiche Bay is easy to get in and out of, but I haven't had much luck there. If you go into the store at the bay or Tommys, they can usually tell you where they are biting and what bait to use.

Prefer to call the Rez the Dead Sea. It is productive “if” you know where to go. If you don’t, can spend all day without a bite.
The ironic thing about it is the 2 fish I have mounted were caught off the bank (at family members house) in Pelahatchie Bay.
Just under 10lb bass and wife caught 46oz crappie. Pretty much luck given the time of year they were caught and the water level.

Very accurate post on The Rez, I have a friend that calls it by the same name.

The catfish can be caught about anywhere but anything else requires some knowledge and skill.

Just for clarification, what most people refer to as the low head damn is up 25 near Carthage. Below Lefluers you have the waterworks dam. With the amount of untreated sewage the city of Jackson dumps in the pearl I wouldn’t fish waterworks and just to be safe I don’t fish below the spillway even though that is upstream.

My opinion on bass fishing the Rez from the bank is that it will be tough this time of the year. The lake is drawn down to help the salvania fight and the fish are either on cover or schooling chasing shad. I’ve had a great summer bass fishing the Rez from my kayak. Catching every trip including 1 really nice fish a few weeks back (7ish lbs). I think you’re best bet bank fishing is of the Trace during the spawn (March) when they’re on the beds. I’d probably suggest the same area now simply because you can walk the most bank right there but I’d make long cast and live minnows under a cork will be your best bet. If you can access an area with heavy grass or pads a hollow body frog will work. Probably 50% of my fish this summer have been on frogs.
