So, Aunt Becky's daughters were about as legitimate college athletes as most female rowing team roster members are? Is that a not guilty verdict I see?

176 members of the Wisconsin Women's Rowing team huh. Sounds like they are racing war galleys.

I saw a few minutes of a "sport" on television a month or so ago called Ultimate. It appeared to essentially be women playing football with a Frisbee. Is that what this picture is about (other than the obvious)?

Negative, that pic is lingerie football league. Ultimate is the Frisbee version usually played by hippies.

I'll admit to being old and old-fashioned, but Title IX is ridiculous. This is what Polk referred to when he said women's crew had many more scholarships than baseball at many schools. Title IX seems to be forgetting what a University is supposed to be all about -- academics. Athletics is just collateral.

Apparently Title IX requires as many female participants in athletics as there are male participants. I thought it was that scholarships had to be equal, not participation.

OK, that makes sense. What I saw on ESPN was from California, USC I think, so it fits the hippy bill. If Lingerie League football ever becomes widespread, there needs to be some physical requirements and limitations ....

I wonder if Lori Loughlin's daughters could participate in Ultimate ... they just got kicked out of their sorority so they need something to do.

It's not that the participants need to be equal but that they need to roughly mirror the overall male/female student population percentages. So, if your school is 50-50, your participation opportunities need to be approximately 50-50. If your school is 60-40, your participation rates should be close to that. Then, the athletic scholarship dollars you offer need to be proportional to participation. So you can't have 50-50 participation but have 70 percent of the scholarships going to one gender over the other.

Another important note is that Title IX isn't just for athletics, it applies to almost all aspects of university life.

Here is a Title IX FAQ: http://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/inclusion/title-ix-frequently-asked-questions#compliance

title 9 isn't just for sports. It's almost exclusively discussed with regards to sports here since it's a sports board.
It's for education, on campus treatment of genders, etc at any school receiving federal funding.
Basically, it's a civil law that was created because too many people weren't willing to just treat genders equally when it came to opportunity, so the government made schools comply since not treating genders equally and not giving them equal opportunity leads to seriously inequitable results later in life.
It's for the betterment of society.

Having a mom, a sister, a mother in law, a sister in law, two daughters, and 4 nieces - I like knowing that much of my family isn't treated worse with regard to higher education opportunities just because of their gender.

Apparently you feel it's ridiculous though. Cool.

It's ridiculous for sports. Like there's no reason this should be preventing Athletic Departments from giving full scholarships to everyone.

Did you know Gymnastics gets full scholarships? That's why a lot of SEC schools have that too fyi.

But as someone who's seen title 9 a lot on the academic side it was much needed. And it works.

I don't understand why there isn't some sort of exemption for football since there isn't a female equivalent.

Athletic participation equal to the male-female enrollment with the exception of the 85 males in football.

Just seems like common sense.

I think it was pretty obvious he was referring to sports, and not saying your female family members don’t deserve an equal education
