You mean the Sports Information Director Poll?
We were 25th at the end of last season (unranked by AP) and lost 3 1st round draft picks, a 2nd round pick, and one of the best QBs we've ever had. As a neutral, I wouldn't rank us either.
Who cares. We must win every game to be national champions. That is the goal, right?
If pollsters are just going to regurgitate computer rankings, they cease to serve literally any purpose at all.In 1975 logic, this is correct. The computer models heavily disagree with you though and they are way more knowledgeable than you

Top 25 means more media coverage. That's about it.
No they didn't. Most had us at 8.5 wins or so.The computer models thought we were a hell of a lot better last year than our record was too.

Those don't measure wins.We were top 10 in final FPI, FEI, and s&p+

They serve no tangible purpose, sure. It's a collection of opinions which some find entertaining to peruse and debate. If they just restate computer rankings, they no longer even serve that measly purpose. That's the thing. They don't serve any purpose.
I would imagine most attempts to put a numerical value on an individual defensive player would produce more noise than anything. They could definitely account for what round they were drafted, whether they were an AA or All-SEC, etc., though.I'm unclear on how the computers rank returning talent. Does it essentially see we have 6-7 returning starters from the #1 defense and rate us highly bc of that or does it actually count losing a great starter more unfavorably than just a decent starter?
Wrong. That's not how it works.Right. We underachieved
Wrong. That's not how it works.
You know what's really weird? Alabama and LSU, two teams we lost to, finished #1 and #5. Auburn, a team we beat, finished #6. Florida, a team we lost to, finished #9. Texas A&M finished 11, Kentucky 25.
Seems we did just about what we were supposed to given our schedule. This is what escapes you.
AGAIN, those rankings do not measure wins (against your schedule, which differs from conference to conference). I don't think you quite have an understanding of these statistics, which happens a lot on this board, especially to you. I am, however, prepared for you argue until all hours of the night.

If that’s really your goal, you picked the wrong 17ing team.
I could say Mullen blew a shot by losing to Ole Miss in 2017 (and Alabama). 2017 version of 8-4 was no better or worse than 2018 version.Yep. My goal is a NY6 bowl every 3-4 years. I feel like we blew our shot last year. If we get 7 wins this year, I'm ok

Both were about where the metrics picked us to be. So in that vein, we are all being homers.
