There probably aren’t a ton of people that will readily admit it, but I think that there are others that feel the same way.

Yup, the truth is that people just aren't that interested. I think what happened was that because a lot of people were trying to figure out some reason, people felt obligated to come up with reasons they didn't attend games/lost interest.

When people shared the honest reasons, some people didn't like those reasons. It really just boils to down to ambivalence and apathy. I really don't care that much about the men's team. They just don't interest me.

When the attendance can fit 200 people - attendance doesn't matter. When you have a 10K seat arena and only 3K come - it's disheartening as a player. I get where he's coming from. This isn't high school.

Sorta agree, but Florida Baseball disagrees.

Preach om Reggie!!!!
We have a really goods men's team and they are much better athletes and way more exciting to watch.

Why the Hell don't our fans support them and Coach Howland?
Stansbury is not coming back to coach, get over it. If you don't use your seats, then give them away or don't buy tickets to begin with.

When Perry misses a game winning shot this year, let us all remember the 10 seconds he took to read and retweet this. Would one more rep in July have made the difference? Would that 3-pointer have made it just over the front of the rim if his leg's had just .000001% more stamina?

Who's to say? And because Perry isn't 100% focused on training for literally every waking minute, we'll never know.

Ridiculous. Who’s to say he isn’t focused on training? He just got done busting his *** to get invited to the NBA combine, and did pretty well there. Nobody can train 24/7/365. Would your reaction be the same if he had just posted a laugh emoji to a cat video? No, because it doesn’t harm your sensibilities as a fan.

Baseball sort of a different animal. There's more money incentives there, in lottery states.

Even with that said, how do you explain MSU baseball? While there's more parity in baseball due to scholarships, the biggest fanbases still have a recruiting edge.

Must be expensive to attend games from Colorado.

It’s easy to forget that during Stansbury’s heyday, men’s basketball was the one fairly constant glimmer of hope that we had as a fan base. Now, there’s a heck of a lot more to be excited about, and as has been pointed out many times, the SEC network has given us all many excuses to not attend a game

I think this is a very important point that gets lost sometimes. Our men's basketball glory days in the 2000's came at a time when our football and baseball programs were at two of the lowest points in their history. Even in '96 we were coming off a 3-8 year in football and a baseball season where we didn't qualify for a Regional. Our '91 SEC title run came right after the end of the Rockey Felker era in football when we went 5-28 in SEC play.

This is the first time ever that we've been good at all of the major sports at the same time, plus we're really good at women's basketball and it has essentially made the Big 3 a Big 4. It's 2019 and everyone has short attention spans now anyway, but add in the fact that you've got one of the smallest fanbases in the SEC and four programs who require what can add up to be a significant commitment of time and money from our fans, and it's not shocking that one of those four sports isn't as well supported as the others. The fact that they didn't get good until after the other sports were well established doesn't help their cause. That's not the fault of last year's team, but it's an unfortunate side effect of years past that they have had to suffer for undeservedly.

Again, I wish attendance was better and think the fans can certainly do more to help the situation, but I also understand why the average MSU fan can't be present for all four programs and also why men's basketball has been the one that's suffered from this.

Is it a player's job to worry about attendance?

I don't think it is. That's why I never worried about attendance at the games that I played in as a player. That's my point. As a player, your worries should be improving yourself/your team and winning games.

The job of worrying about attendance belongs to the Athletic Director and the fans. Not the player. That's the point I was trying to make.

In a bubble - your scenario is true. But we aren't in a bubble and we aren't playing in a high school gym.

Players are human though. If you were used to seeing 100 people at one of your high school games and you walked out to 5 - you wouldn't notice?

No. I wouldn't care.

As a player, I can't directly control whether any of the fans choose to attend the game I'm playing.

As a player, I can directly control my training, working out, preparation and level of effort put forth while playing the game. (Does anybody remember Aric Holman's defense last season?)

As a player, I'm there to play the game and to help us beat the other team, regardless of how many people are at the game.

I think the timing of everything that happened is hugely important with the men’s attendance issues. The reseating dilemma years ago played at least a small role, then Stansbury’s last two teams were very frustrating and frankly unlikable at times, then we were .500 or worse for five straight years after that. SEVEN YEARS where our men’s program had a really negative stigma attached to it. That means two graduating classes of MSU students came and went in four years and we sucked at basketball the entire time, and several other classes had at least most of their college careers filled with bad basketball. People stopped caring and honestly it was justifiable at the time and now it’s hard to get them back even now that we are winning. It also coincided with an era where live sports attendance is already less and less of a big deal than it used to be.

While all that was going on, the women stepped in and filled the void for a lot of people. And they haven’t done anything yet to make people lose interest (it will be interesting to see what happens whenever their next down year is plus now that the ticket situation has changed). I also don’t think the men’s program has had the same endearing personality that some of our other programs have had. Howland has done a good job but he’s not much of a rah rah guy that gets the fanbase fired up. Our star players in other sports have been big personalities or great stories (Dak, Mangum, Big T, etc.). I loved Q but his quiet and sometimes distant nature didn’t endear him to our fans like other stars on campus. It’s also been mentioned that our men don’t seem to make themselves as available to fans as many of our other teams, and unfortunately some of the only hints of personality we see from them is complaining about various things on Twitter.

The men deserved better support the last two years, I won’t deny that. But I also kind of understand why it hasn’t happened. There is a disconnect with our men’s program and our fans that we don’t have in other sports, and I think both sides have more that they need to do if this is to be fixed anytime soon.

I believe the reseating played more than a small role. You replaced loyal basketball fans in the lower concourse with folks that could pay more but had little interest in actually attending games. Most only seem to buy those tickets to generally support MSU athletics and to increase Bulldog Club points for purchasing football tickets. Even now when we have big crowds there are usually more empty seats in the lower arena than in the upper arena. Also the reseating put MSU students in significantly worse seating at the same time the program took a major downturn. We REALLY need students to come to games to have decent crowds at pre-conference and midweek games because of travel issues for other fans. Seems even with the program's recent improvement its been hard to get the students back to games at the levels they were coming back in the Stansbury days.

******* his girlfriend isn't his job either, but if he wants to devote a few minutes of his day to that, I won't begrudge him.

Even if being the best player he can be is the most important thing in Reggie Perry's life, he still has time for other things. You're trying to hold him to an absolutely ridiculous standard while also acting like every athlete should feel the same way you did back when you could hit a ball over them mountains.

Your takes in this thread have been terrible. If you don’t think athletes love playing in front of a rowdy, capacity crowd then I don’t know what to tell you. It matters.

For me personally, I'm just not that interested in the men's basketball team, and I don't know if I ever will be again. I've moved on to other sports.

Agreed, plus MBB might be the dirtiest from of amateur athletics. Doesn't help with the players being extremely entitled either.

I miss the scrappy players that played hard for 40 minutes. I am not sure if we will ever see that again in men's basketball at any level.

A leader that trains with effort, plays with effort, encourages other players, inspires both players and fans.

Mens basketball has become a selfish individual showcase sport and no one really likes that ****.

Exactly. You don't think it bothers a football player when we only have 30K in the stands after halftime? No doubt in my mind it does.

The simple fact is, the women have put a much better product on the floor the past 8 years. I can promise you that if the product is anywhere near equal, the men's team will always outdraw the women's team.

Its hard to outdraw the womens team when they sellout consistantly.

That's a pretty freaking big exception.

Sure. My point was all the other reasons shouldn't even be mentioned. Just focus on the exeption which is the 1 difference.

And that means fans don't attend because the team hasn't won an NCAAt game in a decade.
Related note- it's amazing northwestern was ever able to get anyone to attend games for decades.

Agreed for our players as they and the team administration have collectively shown thru the years they cant effectively utilize player social media accounts for the betterment of players or team.

But at Duke(for example) they have a social media director(and someone else also involved) who work with players 1on1 to create a brand that benefits the individual and program. Its in part how Zion left school with more IG followers than half of last season's NBA All-Stars.

It can be an extremely powerful tool when used to promote the program and individual from the player level. It can also be the bane of a coach's existence when there isnt a plan or the ability to follow said plan.

With all that said, Ill continue to stay off Twitter since I cant miss what I dont know and I dont miss what I do know.

You didn't say those exact words, but if you want to play that game, I also didn't claim you said those exact words. Here is you implying that he should, though.

"I never cared how many fans were watching. What I did care about is this: winning the game. Bitching about how many fans are in the stands is what losers do."

"

I would imagine a strict "Zero Social Media" policy would directly harm recruiting in 2019.
