Takes place in Meridian, MS. I know these things can be one sided for dramatization purposes but holy hell the Meridian PD concluded their findings that it was a suicide in less than 1 hour?

It is most assuredly a cover up of some kind. There is no way anyone with any sense whatsoever can look at that scene and rule it a suicide. As a matter of fact the person who ruled it a suicide WASNT EVEN THERE. He called into those at the scene and told them suicide! I hope someone eventually talks and exposes the real truth behind this. I feel so sorry for the family having to go through this crap. If you really want to learn more about this case. Follow the Culpable Facebook page and watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsNBKXlUrfs part 2 and 3 should show up in the video suggestions on the right.

There's one thing that all the most popular crime stories have in common - questionable police work. In this case, they really haven't given any hints as to why it could all be a cover-up

They have to eventually. The evidence doesn't support suicide for therefore it has to be a homicide. If the police couldn't see that and chose not to investigate, then what else could it be?

The show linked above said that the police chief ruled it a suicide over the phone.

They really didn't address all the "suicidal" texts that Christian allegedly sent Whitley beforehand. Also, on the most recent episode of Culpable, they talked about the bathroom door. Seeing the scene photo made it seem unlikely that anyone would be able to open the door, especially if rigor had set in.

I have listened and know many of the people involved in the podcast — victim’s side and investigators’ side. The Podcast, like most, is very much one-sided. If you want to see the ENTIRE file from the state AG’s office, there’s a Facebook page called “unjustifiable” that exists for the purpose of providing an unbiased presentation of the evidence. You can download the entire file there. Be warned - crime scene and autopsy photos are there. I’m not going to tell you what you should think, but 1) make sure you understand you’re listening to a podcast with an agenda, and 2) reserve judgment until you’ve read the ENTIRE file.

Just finished it. Outstanding podcast. Finished it in three days. Love listening to good podcasts while walking/jogging, and I couldn’t get enough of this one. Actually I’m now looking for a new one.... Any suggestions from the pack? I just finished season 2 of In the Dark which is a triple murder case in Winona that got pinned on Curtis Flowers. It was also good. But need a new one.

I lived in a 2BR Apartment at Willow Ridge for a year in 91 or 92. There is no way you could not hear a gunshot in the upstairs bathroom if your downstairs. The bathroom is at the top of the stairs and the living room ceiling is vaulted and open to the 2nd floor.

Uh, the dude on Unjustifiable calls himself a private investigator for one of the main suspects (the girlfriend). I honestly think he’s just trying to get a piece. He’s also a former $12/hr Meridian police department official. So, yeah he’s definitely biased. The case file he released to the public had people’s Social Security Numbers, info he took out, etc. In addition, MPD is so crooked and def not playing with the sharpest tools in the shed. They performed a 45 min investigation. Their slant towards suicide is in that case file. In the last Culpable episode, they used national forensic specialists to show proof against the crime scene using science. This thing has corruption written all over it..

Yes, the guy who hosts the Unjustifiable page was a Marine, a private investigator and a cop -- and he is also an attorney. His father and brother are attorneys, too. I promise, he doesn't need the money (assuming that's what you're referring to in your comment that "he's just trying to get a piece"). And, yes, he might be personally biased, but the AG's report clearly points to suicide. Now, was the crime scene tampered with? Probably. Did the PD rush to judgment? Probably. However, that doesn't change the end results that the PD, the LCSD, the MBI, the DA's investigators, the ME, and at least one ATF agent determined: Suicide. What we've got here is a grieving mother (and extended family) who was estranged from her son and wants to place blame on someone else for her son's death. It's a sad situation, all around. However, the texts Joel released on Unjustifiable's page clearly identify a suicidal individual, at best; and a potentially homicidal person, at worst. Unjustified has been clear: He omitted some texts out of human decency -- the ones involving graphic "sexting" between Christian and Whitley, the ones between Christian and his brother that disparaged Rae, and the texts discussing illegal activity. Understandable omissions, I'd say. Look, I am not a fan of MPD or LCSD, AT ALL, but I don't think corruption is at play; I think ineptitude is a more accurate explanation. But their ineptitude doesn't make Whitley and Dylan, in all their glorious loser-ness, murderers. Perhaps they should be investigated for tampering with a crime scene or whatever additional charges might be at play after Christian's death, but they didn't pull the trigger on the gun that killed him. Also, the forensic specialists you mention -- one of whom is Knox and Associates -- have been proven to use junk-science and are less than respected in that community. Remember: They work for the family that hired them, not an unbiased employer. The point of my original post was just to remind folks that Podcasts don't have to tell the truth; they don't report the whole story, either. You (we) are listening to a podcast with a political agenda -- to unseat the current district attorney. As long as everyone realizes that -- and I'm sure you do -- then people can believe what they want. However, no one is going to convince me that this is a corruption case that goes all the way to the attorney general's office (and includes at least one federal agent, with whom I am personally acquainted). If people want to listen to the podcast, then at least read the file provided by the AG, then make a determination.

Did Dylan kill Christian?

I like the podcast, but unless I zoned out for a few minutes this guy has never really tossed out a theory as to what happened.

Doesn't sound like Christian was ever seen after he got off the boat. Makes me wonder if Dylan killed him on the ride back to Meridian. Where was Whitley when they went to pick up Christian?

Lots of holes here, but it definitely wasn't a suicide.

Joel Hamilton is the runt of the Hamilton litter. He was never a cop, he was on the police auxiliary. He is not an attorney. He has a law degree but is not admitted to the bar. He also refuses to answer the question about how a right handed Christian supposedly shot himself in the right temple but the gun ended up on his left side. How the bullet that struck the opposite wall ended up in the bathtub. He likes to come to Whitley’s defense and blame her mistakes on her being 17. There are lots of 17 year old murderers. She was a dope head that was spending Christian’s money on dope and sleeping with her dope dealer instead of paying their rent.

I watched the youtube videos about the case. The expert said the bullet that killed him had drywall fragments on the bullet and there was a bullet hole in the bathroom wall. He said if the guy committed suicide based on his body position there should have been a bullet hole in the fiberglass shower stall. The guy was definitely shot inside that bathroom.

What he said. @patdyeisstilldrunk2, I was gonna let this slide on off the pages but it keeps coming up. I’m not going to say I know this person or that person, which you’ve done in your 2 posts. This is about people doing their job, some of which are elected officials to protect the public. Is it political? Hell yes it’s political. Do you think an elected DA office, which includes the current DA, has any responsibility for a just investigation? Google DA responsibilities. Absolutely. Don’t let it play out in the public eye for the last 5 1/2 years just to start releasing information during political season. I can appreciate the tact in your response, but this has caused a black eye for my hometown. I am not eligible to vote for this election (out of state) but enough is enough. Bilbo has direct ties to the AG office with Jim Hood as a best buddy. All in all, I’m not screaming murder. I’m just saying do your damn job correctly.

I doubt Kassie Coleman had the authority to make the call on a case like that. It was all Bilbo. Kassie may not be perfect, but I promise you you don’t want whose running against her for DA to win. Wayne, Clarke, Lauderdale, and Kemper counties will be a lawless district. Nothing prosecuted. And inept prosecution if it is prosecuted. Pretty much like Hinds. Dude has literally never tried a case. Not an exaggeration.

Fair enough. She may not have had the authority as assistant to the DA at at the time. She has had authority in the first 5-6 months of this year to take action as the District Attorney. This isn’t a case she’s unfamiliar with. There are people supporting the opponent to her that have strong political ties in the city, including former Republican Mayor and some other influential people.

Hahaha! I've heard Joel called many things, but "runt" isn't one of them. That gave a chuckle. Anyway, a reserve / auxiliary cop is still a cop -- just ask one of the interviewers who is recorded in the podcast and who was very involved in the investigation -- who is also an "auxiliary" and has always been. Joel clearly stated he was a member of the MS Bar Association -- and I believe him; that would be pretty easy to debunk if not true, though. Joel DOES reference the de-cocked condition of the pistol, citing the MPD report that says the pistol "was secured." The phrase "was secured" implies that an MPD officer made the gun "safe" by de-cocking it. I can, however, see how it could be interpreted as the cop noticed the weapon and it "was secured." We'll never know, for sure, but his explanation is logical. I think he doesn't answer the gun location question because it's obvious -- the crime scene was tampered with. I haven't met anyone on the investigative side who won't freely admit that something is amiss with the scene; however, a contaminated crime scene, regardless of who is at fault, doesn't make anyone a murderer, when considering the totality of the AG's report / file. Lastly, I agree with your last statement -- and she was doing a lot more than that. But at the end of the day, just because she was a drug-addicted slut doesn't mean she's a murderer. Hell, if that was the case, half of SPS would probably be pushing up daisies right now.

Dawg007, I don't disagree with your "do your job" statement -- had MPD not botched the early investigation, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Yes, they have muddied the waters as far as a definitive conclusion is concerned, but I don't think their botching of the investigation has let two murderers go free, though.

Agree 100%. Lauderdale Co. (and the rest of the district) doesn't want Grace winning this election. 100% of the ADAs have more courtroom / trial experience than he does. And I'm not going to bring up his personal issues...but they are many and serious. And to the to the DA's responsibilities in this case: The other posters are semi-correct on where responsibility lies. However, the DA has to make sure they take a case that he / she can WIN...and this -- murder charge against Whitley or Dylan -- is simply not a winnable case at this time, and probably never will be.

Takes place in Meridian, MS. I know these things can be one sided for dramatization purposes but holy hell the Meridian PD concluded their findings that it was a suicide in less than 1 hour?

Two things that I feel are missing from the podcast:

(1) what motive would law enforcement have to cover it up? Is anyone involved connected to the MPD at all? Many people allude to corruption, but why?

(2) the location of the gun under the body is discussed as a forensic impossibility which points to murder. However, isn’t it stated by Dylan that Whitley hugged Christian after she went upstairs which would have changed the scene completely.

These are two issues that I wish would be addressed ( maybe I’ve missed the explanation). It’s certainly a mess of a case and horribly sad.

1) There has been insinuation that the DA (at the time), Bilbo Mitchell, had a son involved in some way. This will be hard to investigate, thoroughly, because his son died a couple years ago. I believe it was suggested that the "gold colored truck" that was reportedly seen at Christian's apartment was his. Further, the current DA (Kassie Coleman) was appointed by Bilbo, as Bilbo didn't finish his elected term; now, Kassie is running for the office. Her opponent, Michael Grace, has brought this case back to the forefront, promising justice for the Andreacchio family. He's gained a lot of support from a few influential people in Meridian, but I don't think he has enough support to beat her -- this, however, is my personal opinion. He has a ZERO experience in front of a jury, and he has personal problems out the wazoo -- and I think logic will eventually win over emotion.

2) Yes; the crime scene was tainted -- whether intentionally or unintentionally, it doesn't matter. This is why an impartial person cannot trust ANYTHING seen or recovered in the bathroom as it appears in the crime scene photos.

I’m not completely caught up, but I’ve listened to most of it. What it looks like to me is a case of a good kid, a couple of shady friends, and a fairly obvious case of suicide.

All of these supposed inconsistencies are pretty easily explainable.

Really sad story.

22 Hours is the kind of stuff that makes me keep a pistol in my pocket even at the house. It’s also the reason we have a monitored security system and a pair of large German Shepherds whom have 360 access around the exterior of our house. The possibility of someone ever targeting me or my wife for something like that is small, but I can not imagine the helplessness of watching my wife and kid beaten with a baseball bat and stabbed to death. Also, no way you can convince me that one guy with a knife is going to restrain three adults (one of whom a black belt on the verge of opening his own dojo) if they fight back. Lesson learned here is to always fight back.

That’s correct. Hayes Mitchell, Bilbo’s son, is mentioned as maybe being at “gun night.” If his son was involved, there is the motive for the cover up. His son allegedly killed himself a few years ago...

Speculation. The apartment being trashed and drug use. Money and drugs. Attempt to withdraw the money. The suicidal text messages. Drug dealer. Guns. Girl 17ing around and an addict. Coping with depression and drugs can cause depression to spiral downwards.

Also. How in the hell did he buy her a silver BMW? That part is just glossed over.

Addicts use people and extract money. There's your motive.

Yes Bilbo's son was most likely involved. Most likely with the money side.

If you've spent anytime in meridian, you know that drugs and underground activities exist. Almost openly.

Actually, the only thing that supports the suicide theory is text messages to her before he got home. I think Dylan was lying when he said Christian put the gun to his head while talking things out with Whitley. When interviewed, Whitley was asked if Christian ever did anything that suggests he would harm himself and her answer was "I don't think so". Episode 11 just dropped.

I spent plenty of time in Meridian; that's my hometown and where I grew up and lived until going to MSU. This was in the 50s and 60s, and Meridian was a fine town then. It's apparently gone downhill and isn't stopping.
