Dak's contract has been a major topic on the sports shows. Opinions vary widely. A big factor is apparently this Pro Football Focus piece that came out calling him a "profoundly average quarterback."

Pro football focus obviously doesn't factor in leadership ability to their ratings. He is a far better leader than Goff or Wentz. Cowboys hit the lottery with drafting him low and now its time to pay up. Ask yourselves this.........If Dak is an average quarterback, who in his age group is better? I would say if PFF looked closer, they would see he is not average at all. And when Brady, Brees, and Rodgers retire in the near future, where will Dak fall then?

well, average and below average qb's have made record setting $ for contracts prior to other contracts surpassing them. Its a good point that the standard resets every time a contract is extended regardless of talent. Dallas would be wise to get it done before Goff gets his new contract and the price goes up. it may not sound like much, but they could save a couple million by signing him now and not waiting for the bar to move after that contract gets done. its going to be hard to not pay Dak elite money.

I suppose any analysis by Pro Football Focus would take into account the lack of receiving talent for part of last season and the sporadically horrible OL play the past two he's had to deal with, but my main argument would be that if he's NFL average then he's a hell of a lot better than a ton of guys who have started a significant number of NFL games over the years.

Which QB’s have won more since Dak’s been in the league? I believe only that guy named Brady.

Apparently they don't factor in leading your team to wins either.

Right. If the argument is about whether he deserves $35/yr or not, it’s debatable, but there are average NFL starting QBs throughout the league that have gotten top dollar at one point or another. Eli, Flacco, and Wentz to name a few

Whether folks want to label him as average or not makes no difference to me because average starting QBs are still worth big money. There’s also the whole face of the franchise thing that’s a pretty huge deal in Dallas, and there aren’t many better options out there than Dak Prescott

Cowboys are in a tough spot.

It’s a spot that is only going to get tougher the longer they wait. If he doesn’t get a new deal done by the end of August, it will be interesting to see if he keeps negotiations going through the season or not. If Dak shuts down talks and decides to play out his deal before trying his hand in free agency, that is a disaster scenario for Dallas. They can only franchise tag him for 3 years, paying him max or near max the entire time (will easily be in the $35-$40 million range, especially after the Mahomes deal is complete which will skyrocket the Top 5 average), then have to pay him even more over the long haul or watch him walk after those 3 years.

Dak has all the leverage (which he will never have again), and an agent that knows what he’s doing. Clock is ticking, Jerry.

That’s the deal. They can pay Dak $34/yr or they can let him walk or tag him for a ton of money. They don’t have another option.

The other thing is that $34 million/yr on an extension still isn’t that much unless they rip up his rookie deal and start it immediately (not likely, given how cheap he is going to be for 2019). It essentially becomes about $27 million per year over 5 years (same as Garropolo / Stafford) if its a 4-year extension, or $28.6 million per year over 6 years (a little more than Cousins) if its a 5-year extension. If they rip up the rookie deal, I think he gets at least $30 million per year average for 5 years, no question.

Personally, I don’t think Jerry is questioning whether to keep Dak or the fact that he’s going to get paid. I think the issue is that he’s also got Zeke and Cooper wanting new deals, and being that teams only get one franchise tag, there are a lot more decisions to be made than people are wanting to recognize at times

On top of that, logic would say that you apply the tag to players with biggest risk, and I’d say that’s either Zeke or Amari, but their agents may be telling Jerry to not do that or they’ll sit. You just never know, but based on recent comments from their org, I don’t think there’s any question that Dak will be a cowboy and that he’s going to get paid. There’s just a lot to sort out

Not only that, the Cowboys have already used Dak as their starter for 3 years (2 of which were playoff years) where he got relative chump change for his services because he was a 4th round draft pick. Dak needs to get his money now while he has the upper hand in the bargaining position. Things can turn quickly in the NFL where you no longer have leverage to get anything. The last few few years Dak has been doing all the work while Tony Romo has been getting paid all the money.

Of course there are a lot of decisions, but Dak’s deal is the centerpiece that everything else must be worked around. He is the guy that could potentially still be there in 10 years playing at a really high level, will have the highest annual cost, has by far the biggest replacement cost, and along with Cooper is the contract that will expire the soonest. Therefore, his is the one that must be done immediately. After that, they will move onto Cooper, and then probably defer Zeke’s new deal until the 2020 offseason.

Zeke is already under team control through the end of the 2020 season, and has maybe 4 good years left before he starts fading. That means maybe 2 good years after his current contract expires. He’s a perfect candidate for the tag at that time. If you look at what has just happened with Todd Gurley (and what is probably about to happen with Le’Veon Bell in the Jets offense) after his long term deal, it’s hard to see anyone throwing huge long-term deals at RB’s in the near future. Yeah he may not like it, but he can live with it or not get paid in 2021, and try to latch on somewhere else in 2022 as a 27 year old who is not going to get anything longer than a 2 or 3 year contract that will be nothing close to what Dallas would offer with the tag. In any case, he is the lowest priority.
