just since I was a freshman (1987), the following residence halls don't even exist anymore (feel free to add to it if I missed any):

Hamiln (The UN) - got stuck there my freshman year with a guy from Winslow, AZ named Homer. He was gone by Christmas.
Suttle
Boomerangs (Smith, Critz, Duggar, Hightower).
Evans

And it looks like Rice is now empty.

These freshmens (Stansbury emphasis) today have it made with the new buildings.

I was in Duggar my freshman year. What a ********. Cinder blocks and huge pipes attached to the ceiling. Felt like where Freddy Krueger would have been comfortable.

The only dorm I lived in was Sessums, and it wasn't luxe by any means... Hell, none of them were in the 80's.

Had a buddy who lived in Hamlin who was the only native English speaker on his floor.

One of the boomerangs is still there... Critz, I think.

One of the girl boomerang dorms was still there last year. And Rice is empty? That's a huge building. What are MSU's plans for Rice?

I agree that students have it made with their climate control and private dorm bathrooms.

Hightower rules, Duggar sucks.

Me: Hightower freshman year, then Evans, then Phi Tau frat house, then Evans, then frat house, then Evans. (There's definitely a pattern here)

Critz is still hanging on but others are gone, new parking lot going in where other boomerangs were.
I'm a Suttle Hall alum, 1982. No cable tv (except lobby), no internet/streaming, no cell phones, how did I ever survive?

Suttle 1980-1984. We had great stereo systems that picked up stations like KOR and WHKW from Fayette Al (seems a lot of MSU students were also jocks at HKW). Our TV choices were WTVA and WCBI (which really was podunk at the time), with Channel 2 bringing in PBS and WVSB coming online in 1983 for ABC (which helped in watching football). All phones started with 325 and to call another set on the system you only had to dial the last 4 digits.

Fun fact: MSU held a broadcast license for Channel 2 in the middle and late 60s before ETV started. I wonder how great it would have been to have a commercial station run by students like KOMU in Columbia or WVUA in Tuscaloosa.

We had climate control in Hathorn. Just remove your vent cover, insert large piece of cardboard, then boom: instant arctic blast.

Sorry, guys further down the hall...

Was Homer prone to just standin' on a corner?

Rice was used last year....

Pretty sure Rice is still in use.

Was my freshman year four years ago.

I spent three years in Suttle in early 80s. The preferred destination for cockroaches and suicide jumpers in the GTR region. Weight room in the basement, at the time the only projection TV on campus, elevators that you better be ready to enter as soon as the doors opened because they opened and closed in one continuous movement.

Had some good times there.

Campus phones still work the same, only dial 5 + last 4 digits. We did have those luxury kitchens on each floor of Suttle by the elevators, only had an electric stove/oven. Can't tell you how many times I went in there and somebody had left food in the oven still on and cooked to a crisp or on a burner and the pot would be warped, its a wonder the place didn't burn down. And bless you if you ever went in there after some of our international students had been in there cooking. I don't know what it was and I'll be nice but always smelled like burned hair

, its a wonder the place didn't burn down.

Two reasons why there was virtually no danger of this happening.

1) The building was prolly 95% steel and concrete. There wasn't enough readily combustable material available to sustain a large fire.

2) The kitchens weren't even in the same structure as the residents. They were in the elevator shaft tower that stood in front of the residence hall connected only by steps composed of..... more steel and concrete.

On a different and completely unrelated topic, anybody know what tuition costs are now?!?! College debt is suffocating our families of college graduates!!! Something needs to be done to restore room &board to sane levels!!

Paid my son's 1st semester freshman tuition yesterday. $10,503 with room, meal plan, tuition, cap imp fee and lab fee. Actual tuition was $4,400. I think he's got 16 hours. He did have some scholarship to reduce my out of pocket. I got home yesterday and said, "I probably don't need to say this, but I just paid your tuition today. Don't go down there and 17 up."

One must ask the question whether community college is the best option for at least year 1.

I lived in Hull, old as dirt now but in a fantastic location. Very short walk to the Union, Perry, and 99% of my classes, plus right next to DWS and not a long walk to The Hump or The Dude.

If they ever do major renovations or tear down and rebuild in Hull’s location, that will be the most sought after dorm on campus.

Every summer I would take a few 101's at Mohead. I wasn't gonna pay MSU 10 times that for English Comp.

Yup. Freshman and sophomore year are fun as ****. But probably not worth going into debt over.

An even better alternative is a lot (or at least some) schools now allow high schools students to finish up with the equivalent of an associates degree from the local community college. I assume if you go that route, graduating in two and a half to three years is pretty easy at any of the state schools with matriculation agreements. Or maybe do a co-op approach but still finish up undergrad by 22 and have made some money and gotten some work experience.

Fellow Boomerang Boy here. 1st floor Smith Hall survivor and yes we did have a fire in the building my freshman year. No......it wasn't on the level of Old Main.

I also knocked out my comps pre-MSU with Ms. Moore at MO Head.

It's certainly my plan. I'll let the rich families continue to prop up the 4 year schools.

Related note: The average family income for Alabama's out-of-state students before the 2018 year was $400,000.

Hamlin early 90's - I don't recall having AC issues - I do recall having freshman roommate-from-Belize-getting-so-drunk-he-puked-all-over-the-floor-one-night-after-his-girlfriend-dumped-him issues. Didn't mind the puking and certainly understood the getting drunk after being dumped - but at least he could have had the common decency to just stagger down to the bathroom at the end of the quad to do it.

There is no question. Community college for summer-fall-spring-summer after high school is by FAR the best option for value. You can knock out about 40 hours or so pretty cheaply and only delay enrollment at senior college by 12 months.

Wood Manor story. One of my neighbors was from Brookhaven. He said when his dad helped him move in, he told him "Son, years ago when I was in school, these apartments were the ****. Now, they're just ****." His dad was right.

Yep and the old timeline of 12 years of high school, a 'college experience' and all that is going away. The gig is up. I mean, sure, if you want a big party, go for it, but nowadays people are graduating early, homeschooling, whatever. The intent is to better prepare for life, and the better decisions you make from 16-22, the better your life will be.

71-72 2nd floor Critz
72-73 apartment in town
73-74 Hamlin (1st sem) apartment (2nd sem)
74-75 mobile home
77-78 Evans/Clayton Village

Had a couple with kids living next to us at Clayton Village (for married students) that was from India. The smell from that apartment when they cooked was so strong it would probably take down a charging Rhino. When they moved out, a campus maintenance crew had to literally hose the apartment down to clean it.
