Leonard chooses the Clips and Paul George asks to be traded in order to join him. Clippers are sending OKC 5 future 1st round picks (4 unprotected), 2 picks swaps as well as Gallinari and Gilgeous-Alexander.

Paul George is a tremendous talent but the Clippers just gave away their future to land a mercurial guy with a deep injury history. Getting Leonard is the coup but he’s not going to have the supporting cast around him in LA. George could miss half the season recovering from shoulder surgery.

Meanwhile OKC just got a ridiculous haul of unprotected (!) first round draft picks.

I think the Clippers end up regretting this over the long haul. There could be a scenario where Leonard walks four years from now and they’re still giving their first round pick to OKC.

The PG trade is just bonkers. They really are giving up their future for trying to win right now with a not so great supporting cast.

Are the first round picks over the next five years? I think the NBA used to have a rule prohibiting teams from trading their first round pick two years in a two. Maybe a holdover from when teams struggled financially and would just sell picks to bigger market teams? Ik guessing if this were in place in the past it's been repealed now?

Yeah. That’s a LOT of draft picks. And they gave up a couple of pretty good players. If they don’t win a couple of titles, this could be the NBA version of the Herschel Walker trade.

I honestly don’t know how you pick the clippers over the historic LA lakers. Sharing LA with the Lakers as a Clippers fan must be unbearable. Similar to Auburn sharing a state with Alabama. Can’t be fun.

The rule is you can’t trade your own 1st round pick 2 years in a row and it is still very much in effect. Clippers are sending their ‘22, ‘24, and ‘26 1st round picks and Miami’s first round picks in ‘21 and ‘23. OKC can also swap 1st rounders with the Clippers in ‘23 and ‘25.

In about 3 or 4 years basketball in LA will be bad and they will have no way out. They are screwed at some point, but I guess it is worth it if they win a title.

If they screw this up they are done for the next 10 years.

They’ve made the playoffs 11 times and only won 4 series, never made it past the second round - in my life (I was born in 1980).

If I was a clippers fan (do any exist??), I’d gladly trade away the next 40 years of the franchise to have a shot at winning the championship over the next few years.

It illustrates why I have lost interest in the NBA. Teams used to be built and you could count on the players to be there for some time.

Seems like some NBA teams don't give a **** about their draft picks unless it's a lottery pick. Might not be such a terrible strategy for the Clippers as long as Kawhai and PG are all-star level players for the next four years. If they're a playoff team all those years they are trading away non-lottery picks basically and they don't have time to be grooming young players that most likely aren't cracking the starting lineup. They need to surround their two all-stars with veterans anyways and this gives them an extra $3-5 mill a year or whatever that slot value is to spend on free agents.

That’s true. But a lot of players nowadays have a healthy skepticism of coaching staffs and front offices.

The Spurs are seen as a model team and Leonard forced his way out because he thought the team didn’t take his injury condition seriously enough for his taste. And he’s also admitted that Toronto resting him for about a third of the regular season was key in him performing well in the playoffs.

The Warriors also announcing that Durant’s number would be practically retired also plays a role especially considering his injury. Golden State does not want to be seen as a place where players do not want to be— a.k.a. the Knicks.

Exactly, they're the Clippers. The only thing a lot of ppl associate is losing and a former racist owner. If the trades a bust then their next 30 years will just look like their last 25 years. But now they're relevant in a year in which the west could be had. If they just win one title the GM may make the HOF. Not sure what role Jerry West has with the team but if his fingers were on the move then I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

All that said, I used to LOVE the NBA growing up, but these days the last cpl rounds of the playoffs is about all I can stand to watch.

I don’t disagree with that either. I was just pointing out that the NBA isn’t any different from other sports.

The clippers supporting cast is better than the Lakers supporting cast. At least from where I sit.
Cousins signing with the Lakers helps them for sure. Anytime you can get a multi time recent all star for a few million, it's a steal.
Even still, the talent after the starting 4 or 5 for the Lakers quickly goes downhill.

The Clips now definitely have a window to win it all, but Sam Presti made out like a bandit in that trade. He essentially traded a dollar and got $2.20 back. And on top of all that George has had a lot of injuries in the last couple of seasons. The Clips had to do the trade, but damn they gave up a lot. I guess it won't matter if they get a championship out of it.
