Slow and HOT day at work and I've been watching clips of Denzel's AFI Lifetime Achievement Award Ceremony just waiting on the whistle for the long weekend to start. I figured this would be an interesting discussion. There's a slim chance no one will get into an internet slap fight in this thread.

My favorite with him in it, but not necessarily his best film, would be Glory.

Man on Fire is a guilty pleasure movie of mine.

I haven't seen Fences yet. I'm trying to rack my brain to determine which is the best or which is my favorite without using IMDB.

What do you degenerates think?

He was really good in Flight and I think one of his best (outside of Glory). One of my recently watched favorites was Inside Man.

Good call. I knew this thread would work. I totally forgot about that one. The Book of Eli was good but not great. It had a lot of potential though.

Training Day easy. American Gangster with honorable mention.

Can I ask why Man on Fire is “guilty pleasure”?

Man on Fire... it’s the closest we’ll ever get to a good Without Remorse movie.

For me it's Training Day, Fallen, or The Hurricane

"King Kong ain't got **** on me" is one of my favorite movie lines ever.

if you haven't saw The Hurricane about the boxer Ruben Carter your missing a good one.

You’ve already mentioned Book of Eli— I think that and Crimson Tide might be the best underrated films with him as a lead. Crimson Tide certainly has the best cast.

Malcolm X is a solid film.

A Soldier’s Story is outstanding with him in a supporting role.

What was the one about the devil possessing people? I remember liking that one. (Was John Goodman in it? Or I may be mixing movies.)

But I'll watch Man on Fire any day.

Has he ever made a bad movie? The guy is a legend. Me personally John Q is my favorite.

Glory hands down. The scene by the fire the night before battle where the 54th is singing and he and Morgan Freeman do their praying "oh my Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord!!"

Fences is excellent. Denzel directed it after playing it on Broadway. It is definitely a play filmed for the screen though. Almost all in the backyard.

That's Fallen. Every time I hear "Time is on my side" by the Rolling Stones I think of that film.

The Hurricane, Glory, Malcolm. - All great films and he was great in them.

In Training Day his performance dominated an all too predictable, less than mediocre story. But give Director Fuqua credit for some interesting imagery and the fast pace. Denzel had to give an over the top performance so the Academy could make amends for The Hurricane snub - truly a fantastic film, right up there with Raging Bull in terms of greatest boxing films.

Remember the Titans was one of his best. He played the part of the coach perfectly during a time when integration was not exactly accepted.

Glory. I can quote that movie from start to finish. Came out when I was in HS. I may have watched it over 1,000 times.
Jupiter Shotts: "Whatcha doin' since then?"
Trip: "Yeah...I run for President.................I didn't win though..."

As someone already mentioned, has he HAD a bad movie? I can't think of one.

Virtuosity. Gotta be both his and Russell Crowe's worst movie. Not sure they were bad, but everything else about the movie was so ******, you couldn't have possibly overcome it with good acting chops.

Was the Mighty Quinn one of his first, if not the first movie starring Washington? I remember it was constantly on HBO when I was a kid. Seemed like his career took off right after that.

Man on Fire and Fallen are 2 of my favorite Denzel movies. Out of Time, Training Day, and both Equalizer movies are up there.

Good thread. Denzel is my favorite actor. I'm not a big Training Day fan, & wouldn't have cared anything about if he wasn't in it. I love the Equalizer films. American Gangster would be up there for me. Mo Better Blues, Deja vu, Remember the Titans, Antwoine Fisher, Crimson Tide, He got Game, Philadelphia. They're so many, they're all good. Big fan of the Great Debaters as well.

Out of Time was pretty bad. I enjoyed his role in Taking Of Pelham 123. Travolta’s acting in that movie was so bad it ruins the whole film though.
