The discussion about Jake paying his own way the last two years included someone suggesting a gofundme to pay him back triggered a question in my mind.

Once an athlete has exhausted his eligibility and is no longer enrolled in the university could a booster come along and give said former athlete any amount of money they desire without penalty?

Sure you can. It will take some mighty motivated and grateful do-gooder type boosters to do that. Most of them abandon the athletes once they cannot help the school anymore. And most of the time they are getting professional paychecks at that point anyway.

I say we just put together a 'network' of boosters to pay baseball recruits. I mean, would anybody really lose their morality when the baseball players are getting screwed over as bad as they are? I would not. If I had money, I'd contribute and not miss a lick of sleep over it. If I was the parent of a recruit, I don't know that I'd feel bad about taking it. Well, I take that back. Might be tough to take the reputation hit if anybody wanted to out you, especially for the player. It can get complicated I guess.

Yea, no. You will find MSU athletes working for alums all over the place. And certainly most athletes aren't getting professional paychecks at that point. I don't know if we do a good job of it compared to other schools, but we don't abandon them, or at least not the ones that are likeable.

I was talking more about cash payments, Go Fund Me's and so forth.

Getting guys jobs that you know, or who did you a favor, etc. is just the way of the world. That's how relationships work.
