Mangum signed with the Mets for $20K

Per Jim Callis. Not a typo, for real only $20K. His slot value was $487,000, and he got roughly 4% of that.

Just gives you an idea of how little leverage seniors have in the MLB Draft. Hate it for Jake now, but I look forward to seeing him work his way through the ranks.

Don't feel bad for Jake. He's turned down that slot a few times already the last two years knowing full well what he'd receive as a JR.

If Mangum wanted to make $400K in the draft, he could've already done so

You got to thank Jake for loving MSU and wanting to help get a Natty to give up that much money to give it another shot. He is a MSU hero!

The Mets get a $ value for all picks. They have to stay in that lane or get penalized. All College srs go through this. Mangum would not have gotten more that $20k last yr either based on where he was picked. The mets are savings as much as they can for their 3rd round pick who has told them he will go to Florida, unless. He is a stud. Lets hope they sign him-Matthew Allan

This is one reason players should almost always take what they can get as a junior. Still, I'm surprised he signed that low and assume he just didn't want to waste time negotiating over a few tens of thousands of dollars. Jake's smart enough to realize that he's going to be successful whatever he does and this contract isn't going to be much to him whether he makes it to the big leagues or not.

I agree, you have to sign early if you get the chance.

Coming out of high school? Well, that is iffy. But as a junior, you have to sign.

That's the reason he went in the 4th round this year whereas he had been going in much lower rounds in previous years when he had leverage. Mets picked him up early because they knew they could sign him way below slot which gives them leftover money to sign other draftees that have other options. I mean basically Jake can sign for what paltry amount they offer or go do something besides play baseball. That's his only choice. Really MLB needs to stop allowing teams to get around the slot values by taking advantage of guys that don't have other options.

Everybody’s situation is different. Let’s just call a spade a spade....Jake’s dad played 9 years in the NFL and is now the Senior VP of an investment firm. Chances are 100% that his family is 17ing loaded. Guys with good family fortune like that may value the extra year of college over any financial incentive to turn pro early. Or, they may be even more driven to make their own way in life to get out of the family shadow, and take a big payday as soon as they can. Neither approach is wrong. Jake appeared to love MSU enough to demand a really big signing bonus number during the past 2 drafts, which is part of why he didn’t go higher in the 2017 and 2018 drafts. We should all be glad he took that route.

Thankfully Jake's family does not need the money. They are quite well off. This gives Jake the opportunity to do what he loves and to do it knowing that he has time on his side so he can earn what he will get later on. Jake is a winner. He will prove himself to the Mets and MLB. His next contract will be much, much better. May also lead to him having options on where he wants to play.

Whatever he does...baseball or not...this young man is a natural born leader who no doubt has had great role models and a terrific support system from his parents. He reeks of success.

The money to Jake is not the issue. The issue is the investment on the Mets part. When rosters are setup the guy they gave $20,000 versus the guy they gave $400,000 usually loses. They hate to admit to a mistake. Hopefully he never become a borderline guy in someones mind.

If he was a righthanded thrower and could also play the infield his opportunity would be so much better. I hope all the best for him.

I wish the Jackson Mets were still in my area, but that was quite a while back. I would be able to drive about 5 miles and see him play.

At what point does the signing bonus no longer matter? Ever?

Looks like

Somewhere between $10,000 and $1,000

This has a list of Mets that stayed in school, and have reached terms.

Gordon is on the list, but not agreed to terms.

I feel bad for Jake, and worse for MacNamee. If Mangum isn't getting but $20,000 after being drafted, I hate to think of what MacNamee will get if he signs on with some pro team. I hope they both make it to the big league and prove the doubters wrong!

Not sure how it works, but it may be Big Hit Mac gets a better offer because he is free to sign wherever he wants. Jake had to sign with the Mets or not play.

Remember that Dansby Swanson was not drafted by or signed initially by the Braves. He is doing very well for himself now.

In the long run, that extra $380k is not that much. If he makes it to the bigs he will be pulling in more than that on a yearly basis, and possibly many many times more than that. Losing out on that $380 sucks in the short term, but he will make up for that rather quickly if he produces. If not, he will make up for that in whatever successful career Jake ends up in.

He came back for one reason only, and that was to win a championship. I've never seen a player want a championship as bad as he did.
