Coaches can do things like this? Who knew!

"The more I thought about it, the more it was Mississippi State for me," said Johnson. "I told coach Joe Moorhead Sunday and he started crying. That is how much it meant to him.

"He wanted me. He recruited me so hard. He has been FaceTiming me every day and he has made me feel so important to him. He is my guy and I can't wait to play for him. He has put a lot of time and work into recruiting me and it felt great to commit to him."

Lideatrick Griffin (whoever that is) "re-commits" and says "respect my decision".

Would that be the first commitment decision, the de-commitment decision, or the second commitment decision?

There is no way in this world I could do the things all coaches do for recruiting.

Moorhead is recruiting his *** off. Sucks he wasn’t here a year earlier so he could’ve capitalized on the in-state ‘19 class, but Baker and Huff leaving played a huge role in losing out a couple big time commits last year.

Regardless, recruiting-wise the future is very bright as long as Moorhead is here. We should sign 23-24 this year and the class will finish around 20 which is very good considering this isn’t a good year for in-state kids and stars.

Time will tell in recruiting. Dan wasn’t as bad as he was blamed for. Joe will be fine as well.

Who’s blaming Mullen? Dan did a good job but it’s clear he left some big holes at the WR position.

Moorhead has done a great job of relating to players and isn’t demoting the majority of the recruiting responsibilities to the assistants. That’s the biggest difference between the two so far.

"And like I've said, Coach Moorhead has always been the same towards me. Whenever we have meetings, he is the same way every time and he never changed."

With Mississippi State's staff, Griffin acknowledged that they never backed off him throughout the entire process. And it's a recruiting process that Griffin is "glad" to put behind him.
"That showed me a lot because most schools would turn their back on you," said Griffin. "But Coach Moorhead and his staff stayed on me and that was a big eye opener. They work hard and you see that with our class. I've been following all of our new commits and I talk to all of them. They've just been waiting on me and said I was the missing piece. So we're building something special and it's definitely special with all of our in-state guys."

I think I was unclear with my response. I like what Joe is doing with recruiting. But my “time will tell” comment is for those who think that the evidence of it is discernible based on recruiting rankings. It really is only known when the kids hit the field and the books. Mullen was thrashed for weak recruiting, but he did manage to land the players that gave us unprecedented success and pretty wild expectations of this past year. Meaning the initial criticism wasn’t as bad as the rankings suggested. Joe, if given enough time will too.

Sorry if my post seemed critical of yours. Wasn’t meant to be.

He hated recruiting. His evaluations were pretty good but remember how many big recruits we lost because he didn't have time to check on them down the stretch?

As much wailing and knashing of teeth there was on this board EVERY season I cannot believe I have read a post saying he did a good job.

The disrespect was intentional. "Respect" is earned, and playing commitment and de-commitment games doesn't earn respect, from me at least. If your not committed 100% in the first place, then don't commit, simple.

Like you have any experience at all at being recruited at that level.

None of the commitment or decommitment crap matters anyway. Every single one could flip tomorrow.

Problem with Mullen is that he could never finish the great job he started. At anything. He'd blow a whole year of recruiting by job hopping. Same with the actual football seasons. He even built his own tailor made team last year and bolted on them. Recruited Cam Newton and lost him at midnight before signing day. Signed a ton of players but missed on the select few that could put us over the top.

That's his legacy at MSU. Did a lot of good things but we have nothing really tangible to show for it because he never finished it out. When I think of Mullen's tenure, I think more of a 'solidation' of the program. He got rid of a lot of negatives, like the coaching graveyard and not having a successful quarterback. But he never gave us that solid next step. Established us as a bowl program, and he gets credit for that. But that looked a lot better than it should because he was being compared to Croom.
