....because he knew we’d ultimately need more talent to win it all. If there’s anything I can take away from this CWS, it was that while we were a great team, we just weren’t national title caliber yet.

Can’t wait to see what will happen when Lemonis gets his recruits in here. Will be on another level.

Lemonis was a good hire and I look forward to see how he builds future STATE teams. I know he is known to be an offensive minded coach, but I hope he works hard on fielding fundamentals before next season. That was our weak area this year, but we also had to change out players at 2B, 3B, and SS in one season, which will usually result in messy play and more errors. We were spoiled with having Alexander and Stovall last season. That said, Skelton made a huge jump behind the plate this season and was a very strong catcher defensively......and of course offensively as well.

The one thing I want to see more of out of Lemonis is fire. I get the whole laid back game manager thing but there comes a time where you need your coach to stand up to a pitiful umpire. Fans love that stuff and it can sometimes change the course of a game.

Otherwise, I think Cohen made a great hire and we could not asked for a much better year (short of winning a title of course).

Skelton’s jump from huge liability to one of the best catchers around was incredible this year. I went from having such disdain for him last year to knowing he would handle all his big moments.

He was yelling at the ump last night. But either way, I think you have to accept him for what he is. I like a laid back coach, helps the players be laid back.

I’ll never understand why some of you think this is such a big deal.

Agreed. Corbin seems to do well without much fire.

Because we only ***** about our coaches. If we had won that game and then lost to Vandy with Lemonis losing his **** on the ump then people would be saying he needed to be laid back like Corbin.

It isn't a big deal. I think Laid back is good. The knock on Cohen was that he was too intense and had everybody wound too tight. It's just fans looking for a problem.

However, he could better leverage the home field advantage by getting into it with the ump at opportune moments at Dudy Noble. He'll learn that, though.

It is not a huge deal to me but when you are getting hosed by the umpire in an elimination game in the College World Series then maybe it is a good time to go have a chat with the umpire. May not have changed a damn thing but I guess we will never know.

I do think the laid back approach worked great with this team because guys like Foscue and Westburg are naturally wound pretty tight to begin with.

I'm not sure if it was him or somebody else in the dugout but there was a warning issued by the umpire during the 9th inning. If he comes out of the dugout to argue he probably gets tossed. That's not the moment to get tossed. He's been fired up a few times this year.
I think we're going to be fine with him at the helm. I even like how he wears his hat.

Hatcher and Mule were giving the umpire hell after that last missed 3rd strike that led to the game winning hit.

This whole line of thinking is so strange to me.

Someone should have. Without that ump's refusal to call a strike a strike, Louisville is never in the game last night.
Well we never gave the ump a chance to give us the same benefit. We swung at everything within 2 feet of the zone.

Is it strange to want the coach to have a discussion with a cruddy umpire during an elimination game or its strange that I think Cohen made a great hire?

I think it is strange that you think either is strange.

The ump didn't start cheating in the 9th--he began in the 7th, allowing the first two walks by Liebelt in the seventh, letting TWO different third-call strike outs on each batter without making the call! He was solely responsible for both of their first two runs scoring, and frankly, was directly responsible for us losing the game!

No. Im talking about the laid back part and not wanting a coach to scream and yell instead of taking a laid back approach. Hell did you not notice the warning he received from the umpires?

All I am saying is there is a time and place to try and straighten out a crooked ump. I don’t want a coach freaking out on every pitch but that ump completely changed the game when Liebelt came in.

Was the warning on someone in the dugout or Lemonis himself?

It is funny how different baseball is than basketball where we expect coaches to manipulate the refs to get more favorable calls.

If anything spoiled us it was having Cohen display his set directly to an umpire's chin on a regular basis and still be a winning coach. Outside of that I don't care if our coach is laid back or fiery as long as we win. I have no complaints about Lemonis this year. He won more games than any 1st year SEC coach in history on a team that was picked to finish last in the SECW and matched last year's success.

The bar was set high and he achieved it. If you argue against that, you're just being a typical state fan: complaining.

All 3 runners for UL that scored their first 3 runs were guys that walked when they should have been called out on strikes. Unreal.
