We're in the middle of summer now so I know you guys are grillin, smokin, and broiling all kinds of stuff right now. Just wanted to follow up to say I ended up settling on a Weber Performer (Link) and I have been very impressed and I highly recommend. I have done the full gambit of steak, burgers, chicken, veggies, and ribs so far and I have been happy with the finished product each time. A very nice alternative to a BGE without spending the $$$. (Not hating on you BGE users, just giving an alternative).

These little suckers cost about 18 cents a piece and one will start a fire and have your coals ready in 20-25 mins every time. I promise they are the way to go.

Yeah I use free news paper material paper I get in the mail with my chimney and it does just fine. I don’t need to spend money on cubes

I just tear the charcoal bag as I go and use it under my Weber chimney starter. Burns pretty good.

Nope. Never use chemicals to start a fire. Chimney starter with a sheet of newspaper is all you need.

Those are good but try buying a bulk bag of cotton balls and soaking 2 or 3 in 91% isopropyl alcohol. Burns hot and slow and starts a chimney or pile of charcoal great

Great choice. I’ve been sucked into the Weber machine over the past 2-3 years. Weber Genesis II gas grill, 22” kettle for charcoal use, and 18.5” WSM for smoking purposes. They make a great product, IMO.

I've had my Weber(s) for 25+ years. Parts are cheap to replace and they're super easy to cook on. Love 'em.

Free newspaper ads plus a little non stick vegetable oil spray (Pam) does same thing

I'll admit that I haven't tried this.

If you’re cooking on a weber and haven’t bought this little contraption, then you’re doing yourself great disservice.

I have seen this on many different forums but I just don't see how this is any different than indirect cooking with a plate setter or diffuser.

That's cool.
If slow cooking on the weber, BBQ Guru is a must. It's a fan/thermostat that attaches to the air intake vents of most kamado grills. I had to drill a hole in the bottom of a weber for this, but no worries, a wad of foil will plug it when not in use. You will need to use the vortex or the charcoal baskets and lump charcoal for this little device.
Actually, I never use anything except lump anymore. Less ash and longer burn.

ETA I forgot, I almost bought a Smokenator 1000 when I had a weber. Looked like a game changer for slow cooking. About 50 bucks. Has a water tray, and holes to easily add more fuel during a long cook.

I got the char baskets and they seemed to have worked well the couple times I used them, though this looks pretty slick as well.

I was able to grab a NIB BGE for $500 five years ago. I love that thing. I sent in the warranty card but since I didn't buy it from a dealer I do not know if something ever happened if it would be covered. One of my best friends is a vet and one of his suppliers gave it to him as a gift. He said he didn't need it and asked me to make him a fair deal. I did build a table for it b/c honestly its about useless in just the nest with no side tables. It took me about 3 months to figure out how to control temps etc. but now to me it is so easy to use.

BGE is really generous with their warranty. My 25 plus year old egg broke recently and all I did was take a picture and show it to the local dealer. He ordered new parts, no receipt, no questions asked.

Just curious...why would you need charcoal with a gas grill? Isn't that what you're using to light the chimney?

I have a gas grill and a charcoal grill. I prefer to use the charcoal grill but I use the gas grill when I'm in a hurry and want a quick meal
