Just drove down Hwy 12 and Christy's burgers is being torn down. Seemed like a perfectly fine building yet that eyesore of a car wash next door remains.

*Looks like they might just be gutting the building and redoing the front. Still would like to see the car wash next door go.

Very sad

My sons told me this a couple of weeks back. Christy's was the first place I ever ate at in Starkville when I visited back in high school. I'm sure I still have some legacy grease coating my arteries as I type this out.

Five Guys' large fries was like a Christy's small back in the day . . . .

I used to go there sometimes for lunch, half the burger, and eat the 2nd half for dinner.

There was a management change before I graduated in 07 and that’s when it began the downhill slide.

The suckage began when it moved into the new(er) building. It was never the same. I'm pretty sure the move coincided with new ownership.

Yep. It went to crap years ago. I’m picky, but I just don’t think Starkville has a good burger joint anymore. Hasn’t had one in a long time.

I’ll always remember that Christy’s was where I was when the JWS resignation rolled across the ESPN ticker in Fall of 2003. Kinda weird what stuff sticks with you.

I’ve heard they are tearing down all buildings in search of the exhumed dead Indians and, once found, burying them back in their original resting place at the 50 yard line of Scott field. Christy’s was the first site. Let’s hope they are found before the whole town is torn down. They have 5 days to find them....no pressure

I saw this last night and couldn't believe it.

In related news, I have always loved Petty's for a good old fashioned grease burger. I picked one up last wee, and they had switched from ground beef to some sort of pressed beef material. Absolutely grievous.

The best hamburger used to be (1960's era) at the truck stop at Clayton Village. Called by two names: "The Greasy Spoon," and "The Eat." Actually, the sign in front simply said, "The Eat."

I really hate to say this because it had always probably been my favorite place to eat in Starkville but Petty's has really gone down hill.

I last ate at Christy's on December 1, 2001, prior to the BYU game, because that was the last home game where I still had friends living in Starkville. Which was important, because as anyone who ever ate at Christy's knows, you have to have an available bathroom handy for a couple hours after consuming Christy's. You couldn't just eat that stuff and risk driving back anywhere else.

My best Christy's memory was back from around 1999 or early 2000. We decided to get our order "to go", knowing that we would have "to go." Since we had 2 bathrooms at the house, it was the logical decision. I got the Double Bacon Cheeseburger and a fry. I think he got the same. They put it in a paper bag which he held in his lap. I had to stop at Corky's to get gas. When I got back in the car, he had this weird look on his face. He picked the bag up and said, "Look at this." It looked like he had pissed his shorts. He was wearing Umbros. I guess it took a while for the wet feeling to penetrate the Umbro fabric. No piss. All grease.

They built one in Tupelo... maybe 10 years ago. I was like, hell yeah. One visit later - I said never again. Didn't stay open very long.

It may be the most filthy place I've ever gotten food from. We'd called in an order. When I walked it to pick it up, I almost (should have) turned around walked out. No one else was in there, but none of the tables hadn't been cleaned from the last customers --- leftover food laying around on all the tables and in the floor. Flies everywhere. Had a little bar where you add pickles, lettuce, etc. It was all mixed up like no one had tried to organize it since lunch (this was 6-7pm). The two people working appeared to be fried out of their minds and were out back smoking when I pulled up.

I once picked up the bag from my go order of a cheeseburger basket with fries when I got home and the bottom of the bag stayed there on the passenger seat so I believe your story 100%. I quit going to Christy's when that level of vitamin G was no longer present in their food.

You younguns probably never experienced the woman cooking your hamburger at Christy's while smoking a cigarette and the ash so long you just felt like it was going to fall on top of your HB at any minute. That was late 80s-early 90s Christys!

Sad they are gone. I wonder what they did with their French fry grease. I bet there was still some left in the fryer from the first they ever brought the pan up to level.

Their fryer should go into the old grease hall of fame.

Buy the car wash and some dynamite and your dreams can become reality.

The last time I went was about a year ago and believe it or not they were serving frozen crinkle cut fries and institutional burger patties, they were terrible, that was my last trip. It was like visualizing that young sexy thing you graduated with but walking into the class reunion and seeing her with 20 years of aging and a house full of kids behind her

Just saw that City Bagel is joining the wall of lost local legends as well. Hate what happened to City Bagel after the Tkach’s sold it. Sounds like they are blaming construction on University Drive and increased overhead. Doesn’t seem to be affecting Bin 612 or Stagger. Cotton District doesn’t seem any less packed than it’s ever been.

I went to Christy's about a year ago for the first time in a long time. The quality of the hamburger had degraded, and it took forever to get service.

They never updated that building. It looked like something out of the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" or "Wrong Turn" where the whole town is in on luring in murder victims.
