I ventured over to Stanford’s board to see what kind of conversation was going on regarding this weekend. I reviewed the first 2 pages and there was only one baseball thread about their recent regional. Looks like there is only a handful of people out there that are aware that they headed our way. The whole thing was pretty lame. I made no effort to post but it would be interesting to see what they have to say. They don’t seen interested enough to appreciate any smack. I guess they spend most of their time wondering if their state is going to fall off into the Pacific......

It is a catchy board name. Their lack of enthusiasm is hard for me to understand but whatever floats their boat. Reminds me of the time that I watched USCw and Norte Dame play football in the coliseum. They were both highly ranked and it was sold out. When the game started the place was not half full. Everyone finally arrived and by half time it was full. They read magazines and worked on their tan. They sold wine ( red and white ) in their concession stands. That was a long time ago but I still remember how I was so disappointed in the whole thing. We were in LA on a business trip and took advantage of the opportunity to see some football. I just never did understand that whole California laid back mentality. They would have never survived around our house.

Thanks, somehow I did not spot this thread when I looked at their board. Another senior moment I guess.

I get what they are going for with the board name, but they aren't the "cards" (i.e. short for cardinals), they are the Cardinal. Nobody shortens the word "Cardinal" to "card."

My wife says that a whole flock of cardinals would be much more intimidating than just one little red bird. After 42 years I still have trouble following her thought process at times 🙄 but I guess that I have to agree with her on this one.

They were the Indians until sometime in the late 60s or early 70s. They were the very first casualty of the PC Police. The suck BECAUSE of THAT and THAT alone. If they had been men, this nation wouldn't be where it is how. They are ENTIRELY to blame for the sorry state of this nation now. Hopefully we treat them accordingly.

So this is kind of like playing the black shark land bears. Interesting......

We should just count our blessings they're a private school and therefore not forbidden to travel to OUR STATE.

Stanford changed their mascot in ‘72 to Cardinals (as in the color not the bird) and then went to the singular Cardinal in ‘81.

I kind of wish they went with the Robber Barons or even, yes, the Thunderchickens.

At least you admit how lame it is for you to go to a Stamford message board. That’s the first step toward recovery.

Coastal California is a whole different planet from the deep south. It's like comparing fruit bats to saddlebags.

Technically, it's, "Cardinal", not plural.

That is what I wrote.

From the Stanford Athletics website:
From 1972 until November 17, 1981, Stanford’s official nickname was Cardinals, in reference to one of the school colors, not the bird.

Nine years after the Indian was dropped, Stanford had still not decided on a new mascot. President Donald Kennedy declared in 1981 that all Stanford athletic teams will be represented and symbolized exclusively by the color cardinal. "While various other mascots have been suggested and then allowed to wither, the color has continued to serve us well, as it has for 90 years. It is a rich and vivid metaphor for the very pulse of life."

Yes. The last time I saw a game at Stanford was against UCLA in 1999 a few weeks after 19 Bruin players were charged with illegally parking in handicapped spots & the band's performance included disability symbols. It was glorious.

Link to LA Times Story about the band: Here.
