Not sure I’ve ever been to a A game but didn’t know this league only uses 2 umpires.
Seeing this reminds me of HS baseball days.
No State players on either team.
Has been pretty good baseball so far and a 20oz beer only 6$.

they usually give away incentive like t-shirts and such...hot dogs are usually good and cheap..nothing like a cold beer and hot dog at reasonable prices at minor league affairs

Upstate SC Bulldog here. Hope you're enjoying the Greenville Drive experience. The team is class A affiliate of the Red Sox. The stadium, Fluor Field, has its own Green Monster. Games are fun there, and yes, they always use only two umpires. I got to see Tim Tebow play there one night a couple years ago. The place was packed that night.

Hope you enjoy your Greenville experience; it's a good town.

I went to a Columbia Firefly game and a Daytona Tortuga game last year. Had a great time at both. Daytona had $2 40oz drafts and $1 street tacos. All that alcohol at a sporting event made it unbearable. ***

Greenville, SC is a great town. I remember pulling in there one night in early August 8-9 yrs ago. Weather was unbelievable - temp was 72/73 and the humidity seemed to be half of what it is in Birmingham that time of year. Ton of people downtown and at the game (kids running around on the berms playing) just a nice evening for baseball. If I ever move, Greenville is up there at the top of the list of places I'd seriously consider.

Been to the Fireflies old stadium out towards the fairgrounds in Columbia too. That place was rough. I heard they built a new stadium a few years ago somewhere closer to downtown?

Went to a Lansing Lugnuts game last week. Great time and got a Lugnuts cap. They are the A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Just think. Had they built a new downtown stadium for 6000 seats in 2004, the Mississippi Braves would probably still be the Greenville Braves. And the Greenville metro area has about 100,000 more people than Jackson metro.

And I can tell you from first hand experience, the city of Jackson and it’s residents barely support the M-Braves. In fact, the city of Pearl only shows limited support. Thankfully, Flowood, Brandon, Clinton, Ridgeland and Madison bring enough fans to keep the gates open.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the M-Braves and Trustmark Park in 2025 when the ownership rolls over to the city of Pearl.

I'll be surprised if they're not gone. The City of Peal has lost its *** on that deal.

Same here. Been in Greenville/Upstate for 12+ years. Great place to live and Flour Field just had a 15mm upgrade two years ago. The stadium completely revitalized that part of downtown. Place is absolutely booming. Mississippi could take some notes on how being small, smart and economically progressive can work really well.

Gotta love minor league ball...

I went to what I think is an Independent League game last night in High Point, NC. Dante Bichette, Jr. plays for High Point. Brand new team and stadium and I stumbled into it and thoroughly enjoyed it. Even bought me a “High Point Rockers” cap.

Very interesting article, although I'm not sure why the reporter had to point out the then mayor having a potbelly? Seemed like a unnecessary jab that was no where near germane to the article.

Greenville SC has done an amazing job reinventing itself. 25 years ago if you were seen standing in the spot where you’re drinking that beer you’d have either been shot, robbed, approached by a hooker, or all of the above.

Did they though? Look at Pearl today vs. then. Baseball stadium on its own probably forever in the red, but look at the halo effect of businesses and retail in Pearl. My guess is the tax revenue is up significantly now vs. before the baseball stadium. Pearl and Flowood are kicking everyone's ***. Let's see how the Brandon Amphitheater impacts Brandon in a few years.

Couple of things:

1) Yes, some development stirred up in Pearl, but I believe if you are at least close to breaking even, you can maintain pretty well. That's what governments should do - break even. No, they don't need to make a profit like many tea partyers think, but they also don't need to lose big either. Seems Pearl (and other towns with Braves organizations) is losing big. The outlets aren't that great. The only thing that is doing well is the Bass Pro.

2) Flowood and Brandon did it better. They have bigger tax bases and they invested in cheaper, more maintainable facilities that will return more over the years. The amphitheatre is making money. I hope the Flowood Convention Center does too, and I suspect it will.

Greenville is a cool city with the baseball stadium downtown within walking distance of Main Street and Falls Park. I have always thought that if I ever moved, Greenville would be at the top of the list due to the nice downtown and lots of things to do between the sports, arts, and outdoors.
