Nixed alcohol sales at MSU events. Can't understand that for the life of me based on the revenue we need being a bottom dweller in the SEC. We should take advantage of every opportunity that is allowed to bring in revenue.
We are MSU!!!

Keenum hasn't had the opportunity to nix it. As it stands now it's illegal for it to be sold at MSU.

Auburn and Georgia won't be either. And that's just the 4 that have publicly announced they won't be selling alcohol this fall, I'm sure others won't be either. It's just a matter of time though. I predict within 5 years, we'll see alcohol sales at all 14 SEC schools.

If Ole Miss is doing it, we should be as well. Don't understand his thinking on this. If they sell 10,000 beers at a game at say 10.00 a beer (average price), that's 100K minus beer costs, which I would guess would be around a cost of a $2.00, that would net around 60 to 80k per game at a minimum x 7 games. Could be staring at 1/2 mill in revenue and that's just for football. And that's on the conservative side.

Unfortunately we live in an *** backwards state where some still think enjoying an adult beverage at a sporting event will send you straight to Hell, while those same people sit there during a game eating 3 hotdogs and some BBQ nachos professing your body should be a temple. Either way, People will continue to drink during games.

Love to see how many aluminum cans are thrown out after games this weekend. Not saying I'm for nixing coolers in Dudy Noble, but come on. I'm in club level so I don't really have a dog in this hunt, but just hate to see the University play small ball yet AGAIN.

What Keenum said was "We don't have plans to sell alcohol at games this season" Maybe they want to have some time to plan things out. There are a lot of headaches that need to be figured out before we go leaping into alcohol sales, logistics, liability, maybe enhanced security in drinking areas. The man wants to get it right, or as right as you can get with regards to selling alcohol. Personally I would love to enjoy a cold beer at MSU sporting events but I also don't want to have to put up with a bunch of damn fool out-of-control drunks either. Give them time to put together a plan, in a year or two we'll have our beer.

He will start buttering the bread once he sees all the empty seats in the first few weeks of football season.

Getting DWS changed to "resort status" is really not that hard considering that we are the flagship University in Mississippi. We just for some odd reason like to shoot ourselves in the foot over these types of things.

Agree to an extent. At this late time, we really couldn't sell beer this fall if we wanted to. But it's not like there's a hell of lot to figure out here. Sports teams have been selling beer at games for decades. We're not reinventing the wheel here. Get resort status, contract with the providors, and start selling it next fall. No reason not to.

I don't think many people here have dealt with large organizations before, especially ones that are government and/or heavily regulated.

It certainly should be possible to sell alcohol in September after a decision in late May, especially since they probably had some heads up that this was coming. But it's not necessarily easy. You have to get the law changed or get resort status. You have to look at your vendor contracts for Davis Wade. You have to look at logistics. You have to look at security. You have to look at and probably revise your campus policies. You have to reduce you plan to writing and train the staff. You have to get new insurance in place. You may have to go out to bid for a concessionaire contract, or at least get RFPs. And you have to do all this while also doing the normal things you have to do for football season and a new year. And everything you screw up is probably going to piss off people that give you money.

I won't be surprised if almost all the SEC members take their time.

I like to drink, and l do at every MSU sporting event that I attend with no problem. So I’m pro alcohol, but I don’t care if we ever approve on campus sales.

Maybe not initially, but on campus alcohol sales will kill coolers at Dudy Noble. Be careful what you wish for.

Totally agree. Its kind of like paying collegiate athletes. Its good in theory, but think about what all it would affect. The "Don't ask, don't tell" policy works. Leave well enough alone.

...and the revenue argument is just greed. If you think beer sales would be a game changer or help us compete with other universities then you don't understand what it truly takes to increase our footprint.

I want alcohol sold at games as much as anyone but this is not something that should be rushed in to. There is real liability for the university and everything needs to be thought out. Plus, we don’t even have the ability legally to sell right now. I feel confident that it will happen in the future. I think it’s wise to wait a year and learn from some mistakes others inevitably make.

I have no doubt we will be selling alcohol in the near term, but there would be a high probability of poor execution if they tried to roll it out for football season.

It'll happen.

Leaders may posture a bit to important people who are teetotalers, but when push comes to shove a decision will be made that supports the highest attendance possible. That likely includes alcohol sales to the general admission. Might be a couple of years but as long as the conference okays it, the changes will be made that allows it.

You guys that are worried about liability please explain the 10,000 pint bottles that are found after each game. Everyone on here knows how much booze is brought into football games. So there's no liability there? It's the university's job to make us go thru TSA booths (mind you, we were the first to do that. Bama nor LSU did it last year. We didn't have to wait until next season. We jumped right into that market). How much do you think those security gates cost us? And liquor still gets in. It's in the stadium!! Let the university turn a profit!

Well 95 % of the fanbase wasn’t blessed to be born into a family that gets to purchase way too cheap for the demand LFL seats, so I would love to be able to sit in a chairback and enjoy a beer that I can go purchase. And yea I know that the general admission can bring in a cooler, but I needed to drive the point home **

Selling alcohol at games will actually reduce the amount of binge drinking that goes on surrounding game times inside and outside the stadium and it will bring in 7 figures annually to the University.

Ole Miss managed to get resort status for VHS from what I understand. How difficult would it be to get DWS?
It depends on what Oktibbaha County wants. I believe DWS is in the County. Basically all it takes is one local legislator to block it.

I think keeping attendance up is the key, rather than the alcohol revenue itself

I see nothing wrong with Dr. Keenum slow-playing the situation and watching the early-adopters for a year.

Retaining or expanding season ticket sales is the revenue number to focus on. And that's why we'll join the others sooner than later.

The liability issue is not a major problem. You can insure against it.

But having said that, there is generally more exposure for selling alcohol directly than there is for failing to stop people from drinking.

So you think metal detectors were put in place to stop alcohol from entering the stadium and you think Keenum should defy MS law and start beer sales this year? I predict that you are young...

I think people are overestimating the amount of money it's going to bring in, at least with respect to football.

People have a price they are willing to pay for MSU football, and I think we are close to maxing it out. Most people that want to drink in the stadium are already drinking in the stadium, and they are paying liquor store prices to do it. If you start charging them $8 a beer or $12 a mixed drink, that's going to impact how they view the value. I think there will certainly be additional profit, but I'm just not sure it's going to be the crazy money maker people think it will be.

I'm not talking just football I'm talking all sports. When you start selling something in your stadium you increase security for those illegally bringing it in and you kick out those that are drinking alcohol not bought in the stadium (or you should if you want to maximize profit). Once the penny pinchers realize they are risking getting kicked out over paying $8 a beer they'll quickly fork over the money. Plus some people don't like sneaking in alcohol. Ease of mind and all.

He’s saying we should have done what Ole Miss is doing.....this is not just something that was brought up at SEC meetings this year and people were caught with their pants down. Us being unprepared to sell alcohol this year is on us. Not state law. Not because we have not had enough time. It’s because we don’t want to do it yet. Ole Miss has been preparing for this for a while. They have their **** lined up. It’s not that difficult.

In one of the other threads I responded to someone about the math of the football game potential sales. In addition to the large number of workers needed (if it is a separate stand), I didn’t really even go into the infrastructure that would have to be put into place. Do you want to pay $6 - $10 for a warm beer? Nope. So Davis Wade would either have to build HUGE walk in coolers to house 100-400 kegs (depending on estimated sales and how far you want to move the kegs during a changeout.) Unless the beer distributor is planning on bringing a refrigerated 18 wheeler(s) to keep them in. The same would be needed at The Hump and The Dude, although not as big.

Actually I'm not. And I know why the metal detectors were put in place. But we were one of the few (maybe the only) SEC schools that jumped right out in front of this requirement for the security booths. I know the SEC put this down as a mandate, but you had 2 years to install them I believe. I went to Bama and LSU games and neither had the booths last year. Plus LSU already figured out a way to sell it in the stadium before this rule passed. Alcohol flows freely in suites and club levels. Any liability there?? I've seen people come out of club level on stretchers due to over consumption numerous times. Did the university have issue with that?? Don't think so.

I deal with a lot of folks at the university and you'd be surprised at how incredible the thought process can be at State College when it comes to thinking outside the box. Sometimes I scratch my head, just as those who I work with who are employed by the university.

We're still MSU. But I am amazed we pulled off the new Dude! So all is not lost. Just get those kegorators!!
