Guys, I need some help. Wife and I tried working this out for over a year and weren't successful. I have no idea what to expect or where to start and really have no one over here to talk with about it. That's why I've turned to the pack....(I know, I know...but I'm that desperate***). Any advise would be appreciated. If you'd rather pm me than post on the board I understand and would be open to hearing from you that way.

Thanks

I hear ya loud and clear brother. I made a thread a while back asking the same thing.

All I can say is, sometimes it gets better, other times it sucks. (I’m aware that’s not much help).

Good luck to ya.

Going to be very few, possibly zero, attorneys on here licensed to practice in Alabama. Before you take any recs on lawyers, consider doing this first: go down personally to your county’s district court clerk’s office and strike up a conversation with one of the deputy clerks. Ask a deputy clerk that strikes you as having good sense who would be the first lawyer that handles LOTS of divorce cases in their court that she would go hire if she was going through a divorce.

ETA: if you’re in Jefferson, forget the above. Any other BHam area county, follow the above.

Halfway through your post I found myself thinking “that sounds like a great idea as long as he’s not downtown”

Alexander Shunnarah. **

Seriously, no idea although I could check with my brother in law in Homewood for recommendations if you want me to (kind of hope his answer would be "I have no idea" though). The one piece of real advice I would give is for both of you to try to work out the details (splitting property, any child support or alimony, etc.) amicably and reasonably between yourselves. You could easily both burn through tens of thousands of dollars in a contentious divorce and create a lot of lingering pain and hard feelings. Good luck.

That helps. I am recently divorced and have a daughter the same age. At that age they can handle it much better than younger kids Especially if they have seen you two don’t exactly see eye to eye.

Prepare to pay. But not for too long.

Good luck. Divorce was a lot harder than I expected and I wanted out. Find good representation but be fair to make it as quick as possible.

That’s my two cents.

A firm called Cordell & Cordell advertises all the time about being men's representatives in divorce. Google them. I have no way to recommend them, but considering that lawyers and judges always side with women, it couldn't hurt to give them a call.

The biggest thing is to keep your head, man. Do not get emotional. Don't give them any ammunition.

Take a few minutes to go by a book store (or online) and see if they have a guide for DIY divorce in Alabama. If everything is worked out, the divorce papers and court appearance is a formality. Save big dollars on lawyers and (in simple cases) be done in 30 days. If nothing else, it can educate you on the procedures of the divorce proceedings.

if you choose to hire C&C get ready to pull out the checkbook .. they are good but VERY expensive....but as the saying goes...why are divorces so expensive, BECAUSE THEY ARE WORTH IT.

I want to say the Isaak law firm specializes in representing men in divorces and I think they are based in Alabama. Just vaguely recall a commercial or something. Not much help I know. Sorry man. That is tough.

ETA: Googled then and they are based out of Montgomery.

NorthAL, this advice is free, so you get what you pay for. Based on the limited information you've given about your situation, and given the age of your son, my suspicion is that y'all are not that far from an amicable parting of the ways. You're looking for a lawyer with lots of divorce cases in Shelby; one who looks for ways to get divorces settled quickly, but has the balls to fight when necessary, and understands the difference; one who has a good reputation in front of the judge who will hear the case and can easily predict what the judge will likely do with the facts of your situation. In my opinion, it would be a mistake to use one of these "man-centered" out-of-state outfits that basically refer their cases to local guys who are essentially the low bidder. As I mentioned earlier, getting a referral from one of the chicks in the clerk's office can be a good call since they see the lawyers all the time, they know the reputations, they hear the judges talk about which lawyers are dumbasses and which lawyers are ******** and which lawyers are the go-tos. Good luck.

I would add make sure you have a very clear understanding of the fees charged. I would recommend finding an attorney with a flat fee or one who would entertain the option. Speaking from experience that was painful and expensive.

Good luck.

To echo Cat Duck, I've heard Cordell and Cordell advertise on the radio here in Bham. I've heard Gregory Starkey of the Birmingham Men's Law firm advertise quite a bit on the radio as well. It's rare that my drive to work every morning from Homewood to Hoover that I don't hear those 2 advertising.

Best of luck my friend.

Let me preface this by saying. I’ve never been married so I’ve never used these people.

But there is a firm who advertises in bhm area for divorces and they focus on male clients.

I’ve heard good things abt them and their ad makes sense.

Often times men get screwed in the divorce. They try to stop that from happening.

https://www.birminghammenslawfirm.com/

They have 28 reviews on google. All 5 star but 3. 1 of the 3 didn’t like the commercial and called them misogynistic liars.

Not in Alabama so I can't recommend anyone specific but I would personally steer clear of anyone who advertises on the radio and certainly anyone who advertises themselves as man-centric or whatever the nonsense term is.

But I can echo what someone else said... if this split is in any way amicable, try to work out the larger points yourselves if possible before you talk with a lawyer. It'll save you time, which will save you money. When my first wife and I split, it was amicable enough (and we thankfully didn't have kids) that we just used one lawyer to file paperwork for us since we had agreed on how we wanted to split things up.

And even if you don't quite agree on everything, finding areas where you do can be helpful to keeping a sense of perspective. And remember that even if you aren't together as husband-wife, you'll always be co-parents together, which is another reason to keep things as civil as possible.

And just know that it will probably suck. Like I said, my divorce was pretty mutual and amicable and it still sucked. But hopefully it'll get better. It certainly did for me. I'm much happier now and my ex and I can be cordial on the very rare instances that we cross paths.

Good luck and keep your head up.

The man lawyer focus is an interesting ploy, as I sort of did that in a different way when I got divorced in 2009. I spoke with some of my women friends that were divorced and got several recommendations (and future dates, ha!) from them. Ended up hiring a woman lawyer due to the fact she was best qualified AND Kentucky routinely screws men over when it comes to divorce. I have a lot of men friends that got totally hosed in terms of their access to their kids and I could not risk that. I got 50% custody of my two kids (ages 9 and 7 then, 19 and 17 now) and was considered the “primary caregiver” which was important to me as my ex is psycho.

The court trial was horrible, total character assassination as my ex’s lawyers tried to goad me to react and show my “true self”. Having a calm/professional woman lawyer on my side was their kryptonite and was the best move I could have done. I’ve had to follow up with her for years post-divorce for BS stuff my ex tries to pull, so make sure you have a lawyer that will be with you long-term if needed.

Regarding your child, go out of your way to ensure him that you still love him and correlate that action to your ex too. It’s the one thing you all can always agree on.

Good luck. It’s a brutal process, but I am SOOO much better off now emotionally than I was then. Maybe not financially, but happiness is more important.
