Looks like Alabama may soon have a new traffic law making it illegal to drive the left hand lane unless you're making a left turn (on non-controlled access roads) or are passing someone. They'll give you 1.5 miles after passing to get back to the right, which is way more than enough.

61 probably should take heed if he drives in Alabama.

I read an article that said slow left lane drivers caused more accidents than drunk drivers. I think it causes more road rage than anything else.

There are a number of states that have similar laws. My son got a warning while visiting friends in Oregon because the state trooper.said he stayed in the left lane too long.

Who was the poster who drives in the left lane “because it’s usually in better shape and smoother”? Thread was a couple months before 61’s

Friend of mine drives in the left lane and swears as long as he’s going above the speed limit he has every right to drive there. Said those wanting to pass him are going too fast anyway and should be held in check. Arrggg!!

I believe it was I-65 from Montgomery to Birmingham where the construction crews 17ed up and put a rumble strip in the right lane. People would drive in the left lane to avoid this.

A similar law here in TN has done nothing to stop it from happening.

Until about a year ago when the entire road was repaved, Hwy 24 between Moulton and Russelville, Alabama, was a total pain. The state or county had laid down tar and gravel in the right hand lane, and left if for several (>10) years. Driving in the left hand lane was the only way to maintain sanity from the noise, and to reduce tire wear. Then, to fix things, they tarred and graveled the left lane too, so there was no way to avoid the situation. There's not a lot of traffic on that road, so driving in the left lane, in my opinion, was permissable. I have no idea why they did that to the road, and then left it for years, because it was much before they did anything at all.

That's probably what will happen here too. But at least a person can now be ticketed for left-lane driving.

Sounds pretty reasonable, but I bet it will be difficult to enforce. I personally would get over in the right lane as soon as I could (and well before 1.5 miles) with a cop behind me, regardless whether the law was in place or not.

I know exactly what you are talking about. Been that way many times between Starkville and Huntsville. I did the same thing as you...hung out in the left lane until someone traveling faster was coming up behind me in either lane, in which case I’d get over to the right to let them pass properly. Fortunately, it wasn’t much of an issue because there’s not a whole lot of traffic between Moulton and Red Bay.

That's the key. You'd have to actually ticket idiots like dawg61. And I don't really see that happening.

Lol I pass several cars per every 1.5 miles when driving 78mph in a 70mph zone so I won't be getting any tickets but thanks for your concern.

I'm actually genuinely surprised you still have a drivers license with those cataracts you got grandpa?

I-565, Memorial Parkway... We have to flood those lanes, all of them, every day, Gary, just to navigate Huntsville traffic. I know, it sucks even worse where you live, in Madison, AL. I spent my time there....

Those people piss me off so much.
I flip them off and then pass them and then pull right in front of their bumper slam on the brakes then floor it.

As much as I despise entitled driving style of mamaw61 and the like, I really hate the lawmakers in Alabama for taking this hot-topic issue head on, instead of something vastly more important, like distracted driving.

It may very well be law, but how easily enforced is it when you very rarely see troopers on the interstate? 20 years ago it seems you would see a trooper between each exit, now you might drive 2 hours and not see one at all. Are they still struggling to replace all the ones that have retired?

Distracted driving is a huge issue, people that walk, bike or run with their

back to on-coming traffic are at extreme risk these days.

Moving over when someone is flying up behind you should be common sense/common courtesy/common decency and not have to be a law, but we live in an age with very little common sense or decency, so we have to make laws to teach people to be decent human beings.

Had a friend and co-worker almost get killed a few years ago riding her bike. I've ridden mine only once since then. Just not worth the risk. Going to be a dangerous decade or two before the new safety technology in cars gets fully rolled out and all the bugs in it worked out.

I was taught to respect drivers space in front and behind you. I move over to right lane in a reasonable amount of time.

What I can’t stand, is other driver(s) behind me, that recklessly whip over to right hand lane and pass, before I can move over. If I was to move over, I would be cutting that passing car off, which is rude. Although, the impatient driver just cut the driver off that we both just passed.

Patience grasshopper.

Give respect to get it, it is simple. This is why no one respects DAWG61.

I'm 99% sure that the article you read was statistically..... really wrong.

Probably not. Think about how many more left lane drivers there are, and the accidents they cause b/c of changes in speed and/or requiring excessive lane changes, than there are drunk drivers. Saying they cause more accidents is not the same as saying it's a more dangerous activity per mile driven.

Yes, but this bill has only one reading in session, is stuck in Judiciary Committe now, and will likely be watered down even more. The proposed penalties are already too low, and there is a "free pass" offered to first offenders if they show they have purchased bluetooth or other hands free technology after being cited.

17ing joke as usual. Law with good intent reduced to an impotent, unenforceable waste of money. Idiots. Don't get me started.

Seems to me, MHP patrols the smaller, limited access and two lane state highways far more than the interstate. Which they should. Speeding on those smaller highways is more dangerous.

I rarely see MHP on I55 and hwy 78. I see them often on 6,7 And 8.

Interested to see how it works BUT our highways here have a 65 / 70 MPH Speed limits. You'll get run over if you aren't going 77-82.
