So what really happened there? Did Cohen ever really offer him the job?

I ask because TCU made the CWS 4 years in a row, prior to last year. They only won 33 games last year, and they are sitting at 76 in the RPI right now. It's looking more and more like we might have dodged a bullet and Cohen was right to look elsewhere. It also seemed strange that their pitching coach was a candidate for the HC job at Rice last year and decided to stay at TCU.

Who knows what really happened. My guess is either he got second thoughts about leaving, he just had a really bad interview, or there's some off-field issues that haven't been made public. Whatever, I'm happy with the way things turned out.

Reading the tea leaves, it felt like Cohen and Schlossnagle had a hand shake deal in place a couple of weeks before the season ended. At the time, it looked like we were going to miss postseason play, or at least not advance too far. When we started winning in Tallahassee, Cohen did not want to announce a new coach until the season was over, and I think he may have also wanted to make one more run at McDonnell.

Schlossnagle became impatient and publicly pulled his name out. This pissed Cohen off. Schlossnagle then thought about getting back in, but Cohen said no thanks. McDonnell told us to talk to Lemonis and the rest is history. That’s a lot of speculation, but it’s my best guess as to what happened.

The last two years notwithstanding, Schlossnagle is a really good coach who probably needs a change of scenery. Time will tell, but I think we made out just fine. Early returns are very positive for Lemonis.

Yeah, only a few probably know for sure, but I think Cohen and Schloss had an agreement in principle, but our Omaha run threw a wrench in the timing of it all. Cohen wanted to wait until the season was all done and Schloss wanted to move on with it because it was starting to impact recruiting with the draft, off season assignments, etc. Plus it seems TCU would have promoted the assistant, but he was getting courted by Rice. I imagine Schloss didn't want to leave TCU in a lurch.

There was just too much smoke for there not to have been a real fire. Informal deals fall apart all the time, and I think that's what happened here.

That makes a lot of sense. Have to wonder how the assistant feels about it. He turns down a pretty good job and then his boss 17s things up with the MSU job and he doesn't get the TCU job after all.

This is essentially my understanding of what happened, too. Schlossnagle was coming and then it fell apart while we were in Tallahassee, and then McDonnell said no thanks but strongly recommended Lemonis.

It will be a couple of years before we can say for certain who ended up for the better with all this, but the current lay of the land is that we’re 38-10 and TCU is about to miss the postseason for the second year in a row.

Agree with this. I've always felt Schloss got a little nervous with the way we went on the hot streak and the over-the-top media coverage praising Coach Henderson, many suggesting we simple had to anoint him permanent HC. I suspect Schloss got a burr up his butt and decided to play hard-ball, thinking he could force Cohen's hand a little, but Cohen doesn't play that game. Schloss was never going to, "out-intense" our intense bastard, so when Schloss pulled out his dick to show how big it was, the IB pulled out his bigger one and said:

Someone who knows one of the players (freshman) posted on one of the boards that Schlossnagle had called some of our commits and told them he was going to be the new coach. If I am remembering correctly, Cohen got pissed about it.

Facts as reported by various baseball people were that Schlossnagle let it be known that he was interviewing, something happened and he pulled his name out, and later, supposedly let it be known that he still wanted the job.

I think Cohen and Schlossnagle had a handshake agreement but something caused Cohen to balk. There was also a lot of chatter that Schlossnagle wasn’t easy to get along with and that was out there in the early stages when he was one of about five names being mentioned.

There was a lot of talk that McDonnell would have been the guy but his wife wasn’t coming back to MS. I guess Oxford ain’t that great after all.

I think McDonnell was Cohen’s first choice b/c of McDonnell’s credentials, reputation, and they are friends. I also think McDonnell would have come if not for his wife. His name was in the mix for way too long for there not to be interest on his part.

I can tell you for a fact about a certain future comitted player who I'm extremely close to, is all in with Lemonis, tight with recruits and other comitted players and it's all very good.

Schloss & Cohen had a handshake deal but Cohen promised Lemonis an interview.

Once our season carried on, Schloss got impatient, used Kendall Rogers to push the issue, & Cohen got pissed & pulled the offer.

Wasn't there a rumor that his visit did not go well asking about country clubs and the such...he or his wife was more concerned about social life than the baseball program. my "in the know " contact just told me it "wasn't a good fit"

I heard that he flew in with his wife and kids to check out Starkville, they absolutely hated it and let him know and then he pulled his name. I heard that from several people at the time, though others shot it down.

I know Cohen perhaps didn't want to throw off the 'mojo' but dang, if you aren't going to hire the interim coach no matter what, and you have your #1 guy ready to commit (if that was the case) then I think you have to pull the trigger. Now one factor may have been that IF we had won the NC then that would have been the one situation where Cohen would have given Henderson the job. Guess Cohen had to allow for that possibility.

I heard that he promised his kids he’d stay in Louisville until they finished high school. He wanted the job and was discussing leaving the family in Louisville until they finished, but that wasn’t a good option.

Also heard that Schloss had the job and was coming until he showed his @$$ and Cohen shut the door.

Been saying it a while, if you can't be happy (while your husband is knocking down 7 figures) in Starkville then it's more of a you problem than it's a Starkville problem.

Apparently they were served by the same waitress that served the Westburg family.***
