How close do you think Mangum can get to 418?

He's at 354, so he needs 64 more to tie. We have 10 SEC games left, and a non-conference game against Memphis. If he can average 2 hits/game (he's a 1.76 so far this season, so that's a tall order), he'll get to 376 going into Hoover. (Actually, we could play a makeup game for the Nebraska rainout if we wanted to and it made sense RPIwise. We could schedule a terrible pitching pasty just for Jake, but that's no guarantee - he only got 1 hit against Texas Southern.)

We could play anywhere from 1-6 games in Hoover, and we could win the whole thing in just 4 if we get a bye and never lose. 10 hits would be a great performance in Hoover, but still plausible enough, so he could possibly be at 386 going into the Regionals. But again that's with him playing well above the level he's already playing at.

Is it possible that he could get 33 hits in the NCAA Tournament? I guess, especially if we go all the way to the championship series but don't breeze our way there, but that's probably well above 2 hits/game.

So basically it's not impossible, but it's not likely. 1.76 hits/game isn't going to cut it from here on out. 2.76 hits/game may not get him there unless we have deep runs in Hoover and the NCAA Tournament.

I’m thinking he makes it it top 5 if we have a good run in the post season and he plays around the same level. I feel like having something to chase is good motivation. I know they all want to win in Omaha bad enough. Add that in to the mix it adds good motivation.

I hope that talk don’t start up in media. I made comment after he broke it; that the pressure is off now and he and team can just win now (not that we haven’t been, but should make things more relaxed). Everybody around me agreed.

418 is untouchable. 400 is the logical goal.

Also, Stephenson played before teams were mandated down to 56 games in the regular season. He played in 288 games in his career. The most Jake could possibly play in is 272(253 starts) if we make up Nebraska game, play 6 in Hoover, 5 in regional, 3 in super, 5 in cws bracket, and 3 in title series. Most likely Mangum plays in 25-30 fewer games than Stephenson.

That’s just a record that doesn’t translate fairly over time. Makes what mangum has done even more impressive

If I’m right Stephenson also had 5-time MLB All-Star Joe Carter hitting behind him in the lineup at Wichita State.

The way he has hit up to this point, I really don't think the pressure was bothering him. It's not like he was Maris chasing Ruth in the house he built while patches of hair falling out. Jake already puts more pressure on himself than the media ever could.
