When did we get to a point that you can't carry a small pocket knife around? I've always assumed some large number of folks carry one. Recently I've had to give mine up at a concert venue (we're talking a musical) and while taking my fiance to the ER. Had a friend say he couldn't get into a movie theater with one.

I'm not looking to bring my Kershaw on an airplane or a federal courthouse, and I get the world has changed since some of us were a bit younger. But damn, I'm not talking about a Crocodile Dundee piece or a gat here. Security theater has really turned some folks into chickensh!ts.

I have two knives that I swap carrying everyday. They are both inexpensive spring assist openers. One with a 4 inch blade and the other with a 2.5 inch blade. I carry the smaller one if I am going to a location with a potential issue with the 4 inch blade. I did go to a concert at Fedex Forum where I had to hide it outside since they would not let me bring it in. Movie theaters here don't have any detectors so no issue with that. It definitely is something you have to be aware of now. In the 1990s I once forgot I had a buck folder that I carried back then when I got to the airport. I pulled it out and told them I forgot and is there a way I could get them to mail it. They looked at it with its 3.75 inch blade and said just go ahead. Those days are gone.

If I can’t carry a pocket knife, I just don’t go. I’m not a fan of crowded, public places anyway. I suppose if Kroger or Gary’s puts up a metal detector it could affect my life.

Who says you can't carry one? I carry a small case in my pocket to work, but when I'm not at work I have a leatherman skeletool that I carry

This pretty much covers my feelings about it. There has never been a movie that I couldn’t wait for dvd. I don’t like movie theaters in general because I can’t hit pause and go to the head.

BTW, my knife of choice these days is a spiderco paramilitary 2. Love that thing.

I too had to hide my Kershaw in the bushes at a concert at FedEx Forum. When I returned, my knife was gone, but a worn out piece of **** knife was left. Do you have my knife, sir?**

That's a good looking blade. Larger than I prefer to carry but can see how folks would like it.

It depends on the settings of the metal detector. You won’t know this in advance, but most places, at least according to the guy sent out to train us on ours who handles big installs all over the country, set them up only to pickup firearms. They’ve gotten pretty advanced in their capabilities too. In our testing and playing with it, it takes a very substantial knife to set it off. I carry a sog multi tool and it would trigger it. But my phone, metal frame wallet, and a basic box cutter would not trigger it. That’s the most common setting according to that specialist.

Getting a knife in a venue is easy if you have one with a pocket clip on it. Before going through security, clip it to you pants behind your belt buckle. They aren’t going to look closely when your belt buckle sets off the wand, if it even does. Then, once inside, put it back in your pocket. I’ve done this at numerous concert venues in New Orleans and never had a problem.

I hid mine in the bumper of a truck or bus that was right out front in the plaza. It was still there when I got out.

Sounds kinda risky to me. I'm gonna say if you ever do get caught doing that the least that will happen to you is you won't be entering that venue on that day even if you agree to surrender it.

With that said, I don't really get the concern with small pocket knives. I can't ever recall a single mass casualty event perpetrated by somebody with a 2 inch pocket knife. I know the 9-11 terrorists used box cutters but the casualties were inflicted by the deliberate plane crash not the box cutters and you can't crash a concert venue into a building.

My wife had to throw away a pair of safety nail clippers at the new Mercedes Benz stadium... you know, the kind that are 90% rubber that you use to clip a baby's fingernails. I mean, wtf are you going to do with that?

I carry a leatherman with a pocket clip everywhere I go, no issues at all taking it through security at Davis Wade.

I’ve been looking at the Paramilitary 2. Currently carry a Benchmade Bugout every day. Been getting more and more into fixed blade knives. Picked up a couple different ESEEs and a few Battlehorse knives so far this year. Not an every day thing, but definitely when I’m out in the woods. Mostly like to sharpen and look at them.

I bet every person in this thread uses a pocket knife to open Christmas presents.

When Aunt Gloria has the slightest bit of trouble opening that floral pant suit, you are there to save the day.

I’m sure that’s right, but I’ve been successful 100% of the time at HoB, Tips, Joy, Saenger, Fillmore, and the Dome on many occasions. I think the word case scenario is that they dump it. But most guards running wands are not interested (nor have the time) to get curious about your belt. The only time I didn’t try it, I had it in my pocket and was asked to hide it and get back in line. The best place to hide a knife (outside HoB, anyway) is in the fire dept. connectors that run to the sprinkler systems in buildings. You can push your knife far enough back that it’s not visible, but you can reach with your fingers when you get out.

I pray I am there when the man says, "Sir, you can't take that jawbone of an *** in the concert."

Still swear by my old standby original Swiss Army. I have quite a few, but my everyday is a Victorinox Climber. Rarely find a basic task it can't help with and the blades are still sharp with nothing done to them in over two decades.

Simply can't be beat for the money IMO. Especially now that you can pick up so many different configurations for peanuts with all the airport confiscations being sold on Ebay.

I have my own Forum story. I was there last April for a concert and while we were out and about on Beale I had my concealed carry on me. I knew it wasn't allowed in the Forum so after we went to go inside I just went back up to the parking garage and put it in my truck. We go inside and my mom sets off the metal detector. Well all of security swoops down on her like she is holding a remote detonator and screaming Allah Akbar. I walk through and also set it off. I figure it is just my belt buckle or something and turn to find someone to start the process of finding out what is what. There are none to be found. They are all preoccupied with my mom so I just walk on through, get my ticket scanned, and wait for them to realize it was just my mom's jewelry that set it off. My wife and kids also went through without a second glance. About halfway through the concert my hand brushes my right pocket and I feel something hard in there and it hits me immediately what set off the detector. While I had taken my gun off and put it in the truck, I had forgotten to take my spare magazine out of my pocket. Not sure if they would have pitched a fit if they found it or not since I had no way of doing anything with it, but they were all so preoccupied with a 74 year old woman I could have easily walked in with my weapon and nobody would have ever known.

I don't guess our theater here in Starkville has metal detectors as I have carried in there several times without issue.

I've never been stopped at Davis Wade or The Hump with mine and I've always got it. By the way, somebody on here recommended the brand CRKT (Columbia River Knife & Tool), thanks to whomever it was because its really good. They are inexpensive, and very solid.

On a related topic, why do they use the metal detectors @ Davis Wade and The Hump but not The Dude?
