No, but everyone should be in favor of states spending more on higher education.

People shouldnt have to go $30M to $100M to get a public education.

Of course not. You are guilty of privilege.

Lock it up.

What a dumb thread. Whiney snowflakes.

By your dumbass way of thinking, do you think you (and me, and all us old timers) should go back and pay more since we lucked up and got an education cheap?

Adjusted for inflation.
Average tuition for public 4 year university in 1988 was $3,190
Today it's $9,970.

You are jealous and melting because you don't think it's fair. Poor baby. But the truth is we were lucky enough to go to college when it was cheap. If you are concerned with fair, then you should retroactively pay more money now

But you are ok with you being the lucky one I bet.

I paid for mine, and I’m more or less okay with paying for theirs too. And I’m not a dyed-in-the-wool liberal. Student loan debt is crippling economic opportunity for a lot of young people. The whole higher educational system needs an overhaul. The cost of tuition has greatly outpaced inflation, and nobody seems to be held accountable for it.

Meh. Remove the govt from backing loans and watch the cost of education plummet.

Tuition has increased just like the cost of everything else while wages have remained stagnant. I’m all for free education for anybody that wants it. I’m more for increasing wages to match the cost of inflation over the last 40 years.

Agreed. Folks have got to be educated enough to be able to get jobs-- and I'm not just referring to funding IHL but also MCCB schools.

That's right, and only through high school is a "free" education the norm. If you want to go to college, you have to pay for it.

There's no way in the world that Warren's proposal is reasonable. I realize your question was tongue-in-cheek, but even if it passed, I seriously doubt you'd get a refund.

NOTHING is free. Everything has to be payed for, including "free" education.

Complete cancellation should not be an option. However, significant reduction or total elimination of interest rates on both public and private loans should be studied under certain circumstances (including employment status and income level of the borrower after graduating).

When I first got out of college, I could get a mortgage on a house for up to $350,000 for 4.5% over 30 years, even though I had no chance in hell of affording a penny over $200k or so at the time. My wife had a 6% rate on actual government loans for less than $20,000. That is comically absurd and should be addressed.

The Mississippi Community College Board was formerly known as the State Board for Community and Junior Colleges.

I honestly can’t imagine giving a young person advice not to attend higher education.

I’m not in banking or finance, but could the discrepancy be related to collateral on the respective loans? The bank gets something when a mortgage defaults. Student loan? Anything?

You don't have to worry about this. warren ain't winning the bid for president and likely won't land in the top 3 of her own party's top contenders. Being Native American only gets you so far.

You might be right. That said, Warren is important for the Democrats in that she's the candidate going into specifics about policy. She's well established herself as the policy wonk candidate. I would not be surprised if she's a Veep nominee.

Spending more on higher education will exacerbate the problem. One of the reasons college is so expensive is because the government subsidies loans. Another problem is that some jobs now require unnecessary degrees and credentialing. So it becomes a more expensive path to get these jobs. There are financial incentives for schools because the government is subsidizing these degrees. College degrees have severely degraded in value over the last few decades.

Agree, but paying everyone's student loan debt doesn't fix the root of the problem. It's just an alternate way for the government to subsidize higher education. It's a sleight of hand basically. The root problem is that the government is overly involved in subsidizing education, and universities take advantage of it.

If my kids were close to college, I would have them max out school loans, regardless of whether I’d saved for college. And then just keep the money I’d saved in an FDIC inspired account waiting to pay back once they finish and assess the political situation 5 years down the road. They may end up getting the whole loans wiped out soon.

How about just paying for half of mine?

I paid for mine, and I’m more or less okay with paying for theirs too.

Not all student loan debt is crippling. It can be done rather easily for cheap (less that $20k), but that requires work and discipline.

If it was free, wouldn't a bunch of kids go to college that would not benefit themselves or the taxpayers being billed? Not smart enough to finish (not politically correct I know), unwilling to put in the study time? How many plumbers and carpenters really need a college education? How many would go to college just to avoid having to immediately go to work?

Eh. Depends on the programs offered. Also, bachelors degree holders earned more than $400 per week than high school graduates (median income) two years ago according to the BLS (link). Folks with degrees from community colleges earned $6,600 more than high school graduates and also had lower unemployment rates according to this Education Week article also from 2017 (link).
