Apparently she sang a couple of parody songs 90 years ago that, even as parody, don't really make for a good look.

So the Yankees will no longer play a 7th inning song by the singer and the flyers tribute to her was quickly removed.

1- I support not dedicating public space to racists. Not saying thats what happened here since, you know, it's a sports team not government and its a singer not some ******* slave owner.

2- removing memorials of those who actually worked to suppress and oppress is good. Is removing this statue a step too far?

3- at what point is all this too much? Washington owned slaves. He had a handful as a kid and the numbers grew exponentially. Should my Rushmore come down? The Washington bridge? Does the state of Washington need to be renamed?

Tough to know where the balance between modern respect and acceptance lies compared to historical respect.

Not a huge fan of Clay Travis, but he made a pretty good point about MLK claiming that homosexuality was a mental disorder. Do we get rid of his holiday and trash his legacy of all the great things he did even though he may have been homophobic over 50 years ago??

The problem I have with this is I think its unfair not to give consideration to the era these things happened. Smith sang these songs in the 30s when it was considered acceptable but to my knowledge she did not continue to perform them in more modern times. Our founding fathers formed this great country in an era when women could not vote and many of them owned slaves. I suppose we should tear down the Jefferson and Washington monuments. In more contemporary times Robert Byrd was a hero in the democrat party but was a Klansman in his younger days. He was lauded by Hillary Clinton as a mentor and I am sure there are all kinds of things named for him.

The background search and destroy investigation is incredible today...the public refuses to acknowledge the good things people did if that person was not a Perfect human.

They don't even wanna talk about you if you are not a Perfect human being...but in the same breath the one guy who was a Perfect being over 2,000 years ago, they ESPECIALLY don't wanna talk about him.

I found out my dad thought Jane Fonda looked extra scrumptious on her trip to Hanoi in '72, so he is now referred to as "that guy".

[h=1]“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”[/h]

Exactly what I have been thinking. Have been wanting to suggest my two very-liberal daughters watch 1984 and keep an open mind as to what is going on in our country these days.

That is a very good film for anyone to watch these days.

Don’t use logic in this convo.
There is no place for common sense in the world we live in now.

“Maroon is all that matters” should be considered racist and every shirt that has that on it confiscated and burned.

There's plenty of lessons to be learned from 1984 for conservatives as well.

Gaslighting and doublethink have become essential political tools, and it's sickening.

The big lesson here is to stop immortalizing people in statue form.

Especially for stupid reasons.
