but I'm too damn lazy to go find answers. I need one of y'all MFers to post a SIMPLE "do this, then do this, then do this" post that tells me what the 17 to do to get my yard in shape. I don't know what the 17 I'm doing. And I'm not going to send in a 17n soil sample because waiting on that **** will suck what little motivation I have completely away, so bypass that ****. Here's all you need to know:

Typical small *** residential lot in Zone 8A constructed by a typical builder who didn't give a ****.

Bermuda. 3+ years in place.

All manner of weeds n ****. I'm talking tossed salad.

Easy steps please. Co-op is close

Before your Bermuda comes out spray your yard with roundup. That will kill your winter and early spring weeds. Probably the easiest route is some sort of weed and feed granular fertilizer. If you have a crabgrass problem spray quinclorac.

or find you somebody that can get some MSMA for you.

depends on how concentrated the roundup is....it's a pain in the *** but probably best to read the label

DCD, my late father kept probably a dozen 16 ounce containers of MSMA in a shed that we cleaned out about 2 months ago. No telling how long they were in there. What's the mix ratio if you assume I will pick up a small sprayer at the co-op?

Not to hijack that question, but can fallen oak leaves just be mulched with a mower instead of blown and raked

Mulching puts organic matter back in soil. May have to go over several times if they are thick.

Sorry to hijack. I have St. Augustine and need to kill a good bit of winter weeds. When should I put out weed in feed (rankin county)?

Also so what is food to spray that won’t kill blueberries? Most are under 2 years old. Few were planted last month. Grass is a hodgepodge.

MSMA is good stuff. It works great. For anything more in depth, I would urge you to visit the outdoor board over at tiger droppings. They have a lot of good stuff over there, from lawn care, to gardens, to home maintenance, to auto repair stuff. Very minimal trolling, as well.

As do I. It is very fickle and temperamental. Strike 3 is labeled, but sometimes will cause crazy growth or make it change to a darker green. Think this is mainly when applied when it is growing. Mine is still semi green so I’m really wondering what to do this year.

I have found good results with purple bag of Scott’s weed and feed fertilizer from Lowe’s/ Home Depot. It has Atrazine coating. Doesn’t seem to effect St. Augustine. I have sprayed Atrazine and had some winter kill before. Told you it is fickle.

Pre-emerge in fall is about the best. Mesotrione and Simozine.

My centipede yard has several large spots that are some other turf type grass. It is not St Aug. I suspect it is tall fescue. How do I knock it back to promote the centipede to take over?

Centipede sucks, if your yard gets plenty of sun, overseed with Bermuda. Other than that, pay someone to spray, centipede is hard to fertilize and spay, unless you are an expert.

DSD certainly knows more than me, but I think the warmer the temp the better roundup works. You may need to wait until you have several days in the mid-60s.

Grew hybrid Bermuda grass for horse hay for 25yrs+. Square bales. MSMA is a great chemical and used gallons of it years ago. Do yourself a favor and wait till we have 85+ degree weather before applying MSMA. The hotter the better. I don’t remember the mixing ratio but I mixing 60-100 gallons at time so I don’t know for a 2.5 gallon pump up sprayer.

Roundup works in cooler weather, it just takes longer. Roundup works by killing the weed as it grows so when it’s cool the plants aren’t growing very fast. I spray my yard toward mid to late February or when the poa annua is starting to grow.

If you use a gallon pump sprayer I’d probably go 3-4 Oz on roundup. For MSMA I’d go probably 3 Oz max. MSMA works better when it’s hot as hell outside. Also turn around and reapply it ten days later especially if you have a lot of crab grass.

I've msma'd my yard for 3 years now and just can't get the yard to stabilize. I've got lamb's ear looking crap, this low growing maroon-ish mustard plant that spreads everywhere, crabgrass that gets handled by the msma pretty well, this other crabgrass looking weed that has multiple fans of broad leaf spurting out, and now this brown clumpy thin leaf stuff. Two years ago, I had my lawn looking like a putting green. Now, my Bermuda lawn is 30% green in the dead of winter. Very disconcerting.

For a typical Bermuda yard I would just go get the cheap weed and feed from the coop or Lowe’s, I wouldn’t get much more in depth than that. Might put a pre emergent down in February I guess.

1. Hit it with roundup before it starts greening up
2. Hit it with a 'hot shot" of MSMA three times a summer (2-3x recommended strength), the whole yard will brown, but the Bermuda will be back in two weeks.
3. Hit with 13.13.13 two weeks after each MSMA application (try to time it before a rain).

This is the answer I give most of the customers who’s yards I maintain. Pay trugreen, liquidchem, or your local guy to do it. Do really want to buy the chemicals, make sure the mix ratios are correct, check temps, identify the weeds, don’t forget pre emergent, and determine if it’s the right time of the year? Then actually go outside and do it 4 times a year. That’s just for weeds. Now you need to fertilize.

The pros do all the for you for a miniamal cost. I’m in the green industry and I pay a guy to do my yard for that same reason. If I see a weed I call and they some back for free. Only thing is you have to do it year round to get the results. The weeds you see now were seeds a few months ago.

Upon further investigation, it appears to be a spotted or creeping spurge (the maroonish mustard seed one). Still haven't seen a pic of the broad leaf fan weed online. I say broad leaf, but it's about the width of st Augustine and just kind of fans out from one location. Pretty resilient to msma I might add.

Best to hold off on the feed until you have mowed your lawn twice. It would be a waste of your time and money to fertilize any sooner.

For the weeds, you might want to try the Ferti-lome Weed Free Zone. Use a hose end sprayer to broadcast the herbicide over your whole yard. Unlike a lot of herbicides, Weed Free Zone doesn't require watering after you apply it.

Can't help you with the blueberries.

Not meaning to hijack but I’ve got a centipede yard with a **** ton of long and tall henbit sprouting up every where, particularly around the sidewalks and drive way. I pose 2 questions.
1. Is 2 4-D the best weed killer for this stuff?
2. Is it better to spray it while it’s long and tall or should I mow over it first then spray it a few days later?

Is that Virginia Buttonweed? I have almost killed all of my grass in my backyard trying to kill that ****.

MSM Turf - get it on amazon for $15. it will annihilate virginia buttonweed (bahai grass, wild onion, & wild garlic too). buttonweed will take over your yard, and if you try to dig it up, any tiny piece left over or dropped out of your hand will create another plant. it's very prolific. a measuring cone will come with it. for a gallon of water, you don't even get the chemical up to the first line on the cone (at the bottom). it goes a LONG way. doesn't take much to do it's job.

Just pulled this one out of my yard. It certainly has some crabgrass qualities, but it's not as leggy as crabgrass and as you can see, it's roots are really deep. It kind of fans out.

i live near a lake and the geese are constantly crapping interesting things in my yard as they fly over.

I use MSM turf. It does take care of Bahia efficiently. Buttonweed shrivels up but returns as strong as ever about a week after disappearing. I suppose weekly spot spraying may get it done, but I have killed centipede in sports I sprayed MSM twice. That’s tough because MSM takes awhile to show that it’s working.

I’m just figuring out my sodded hybrid Bermuda after 5 years and it looks like an application of prodiamime once in fall and winter is a good start for pre emergent treatment. I have few weeds right now compared to others and just did the second treatment today. I got tired of trying to kill all the junk each spring when I wanted to fertilize. I would think now is a good time to roundup before any Bermuda comes out as DCD suggested. I killed some Bermuda doing this a little late once but it filled in over the summer. Pick a warm sunny day.

MSMA (co-ops have) works good on most things in the hot summer but won’t kill Vga buttonweed or torpedograss (roundup only) even if mixed up hot and doubled up. I have vga buttonweed really bad and plan to hit it with MSM and Trimec this year.
