The goal being that, like blue bloods, you receive hype so often that you become meh and numb to it.

If hype bothers you, you've either never been good before or you're inconsistent. Both of which are undesirable

No because I’m not a *****.* I’m jk... sorta. We’ve waited years for this. I say Embrace the hype! Embrace expectations. Embrace Greatness. If it doesn’t workout it doesn’t workout but I’m not going to be scared things could go wrong before they actually go wrong. Past MSU seasons have zero bearing on this one. I fully expect this team to be the best team we’ve ever had. Think about this... it will be the 5th time in the last 9 years where we have won 9 games or more. That’s impressive.

2017: 9-4
2018: At least 9 wins.

I'm pretty damn pessimistic when it comes to State ball, especially when "great things" are SUPPOSED to be on the horizon (like this year), so naturally, worried is an understatement for me. My feeling is that if we are going to be good though, it won't really start showing until the second half of the season. I foresee some growing pains, especially with Jo Mo's offense.

If you were telling me about a team in the western division of the SEC that had near complete turnover in coaching staff and whose starting quarterback hasn’t played since a season ending injury took him out last fall, I wouldn’t like my chances. I hope I’m wrong. Seems like a lot of variables. Also I keep hearing about how likeable
the new coach is. Last coach All the players loved: Croom

Based on past seasons where we’ve garnered preseason rankings (twice, 3 times ever maybe?), a little hesitation is justified.

However, I believe the difference this year is that 90+% of the production from a 9-4 team (that took Bama to the ropes and made a Heisman winner look like a Croom QB) is returning with a more favorable schedule.

I don’t care about hype. I do get excited when the coaches are excited about this team. Haven’t seen that a lot as a state fan. That tells me that they think we have a special season this year. Enjoy the ride.

There are plenty of successful coaches that are liked by their parents. To see Moorhead compared to Croom is laughable to me. Moorhead actually comes to MSU with proven success as a FCS head coach and a power 5 OC. Croom had nothing on his resume to indicate that he could be a successful head coach. If I remember, many on this board were not sold on him from the beginning. A typical Croom press conference talked about an offense who "couldn't score against air" compared to Moorhead who tells us that he sees really good things from our team and that this team has picked up his scheme faster than any program he has coached at, but because he is liked by his players you think he could be another Croom?

I'm a pragmatist. What actually HAPPENS is what hype should be based on. Preseason opinions are neither good or bad. They just are.

Placing too much credibility on what networks and sportswriters say is the recipe for disappointment. That and the team actually not performing.

Pay no attention to it. People who have other problems with our potential success just make it up. To specifically address it, I am willing to bet you $5.00 that most of the players (at least 60%) wear their underware under their pants to class.

All we need now is a survey. Why don't you knock that out. I bet it will help you with your worries.

Hype is Marketing! Hype will keep more attention on us, which helps in both perception and reality going forward. If we live up the the hype, it legitimizes us as a program to be reckoned with and only helps things such as recruiting, fund raising, enrollment and more.

I suppose sarcasterisks were needed for the Croom part. It was a joke about them both being liked, as if that one thing alone would have impact on coaching outcomes. It did not compare them in any tangible football way.

I'm actually quite hopeful about this season, I just lack confidence at this point and think the wool is a bit early. I don't however, correlate fan sentiment and team performance. I'm just ready for kickoff, not that it matters if I'm ready...

I'm super hopeful. My experience tells me that everything rises and falls on leadership. Until they hit the field, and we see how the new leadership has done, we have some unknowns.

I will admit that I have thoughts of 2001 from time to time (and there have been other threads discussing the similarities/differences between then and now). I think most State fans have a lot of built up scar tissue from getting their hopes up only to be disappointed every single time.

But, I still don't think the hype has any real effect on the actual games. I know a lot of times in the past we have won a few games and then laid an egg in a big game, and people will just assume that "the team couldn't handle success", or "were reading their own press clippings" as if somehow the team that had worked hard to win some games suddenly thought that winning games would be easy. I guess its possible that teams get over confident from reading what the press says about them, but it's hard for me to assume that media hype alone can screw up team psyche.

Mullen kept saying that the 2014 team had learned that you have to work hard every week to try to prove you deserve your ranking, and that maybe the 2015 team thought things were going to come easily to them. I think based on last season, the 2018 team should recognize that nothing comes easy, and they have to be ready to fight every single week.
