We have our national sales conference in NOLA coming up late January 2019. Me and a couple buddies are looking to stay a few extra days and fish for some Reds and Trout. Do any of y’all have any recommendations of a good guide/charter? I’ve heard of some places in Delacroix. I assume Reds hit year round in the marshes, but if January is not a good time please let me know.

Late January and Feb are traditionally the worst months of the year. That said, if you get lucky enough to hit it on a weekend where it’s warm (50s & up) you can catch. It’s really more about water temps though. So if it’s been unseasonably warm the 2 week’s before your conference it could be worth it.

Maybe I will just bag that idea and stay a couple extra days in NOLA. I will try and go when it is more consistent. I appreciate it!

The good thing is that charters aren’t hot that time of year. Watch the water temps in Laffitte and if they’re above 50 consistently leading up to your trip call a guide in Laffitte. My avi is actually Big Dog Charters out of Lafitte’s logo. If the water temp is in the 40s, punt until April

Go do a charter out of Venice for yellowfin. It’s very good in January and you can get some lunkers during that time of year.

I’ve destroyed bull reds in Venice in mid-late February when a tuna trip got weathered out. Couldn’t tell you if January would be better or worse. Let me know if you want the guides info.

For that time of year, take a look at Hopedale or Shell Beach vs. a Delacroix-based charter. From Hopedale, you are better positioned to fish numerous directions due to being more centrally located (fish Hopedale to Delacroix marsh or go the other direction to fish the Biloxi Marsh.) These options really come in handy during a month like January because cold fronts can seriously restrict some areas. Even with a somewhat serious cold front, the Biloxi Marsh can still yield a great catch of specs and reds that time of year because it's very protected. Delacroix not so much because of the marsh erosion that has occurred combined with the MS River diversion that is typically open by late January.

couple of good ones worth checking out:

Appreciate it fellas! That Yellowtail option out of Venice sounds like a good idea. I need to find out how serious these Co-workers are about it though. Not sure if they are more interested in just inshore or could/would want to handle offshore...doesn’t bother me, but couple guys are from NYC.

Make sure it’s yellowfin. Yellowtail is a tiny snapper you probably won’t find in those waters

If you decide to go to Venice for Yellowfin or billfish, get with Hunter Caballero with Paradise Outfitters or Zach Lewis (from Ocean Springs origianlly)with Mexican Gulf Fishing Co. Both know their stuff and have bad *** boats that will get you there and back safely/quick. I fish with both often and always catch big tasty fish. You'll be looking at $2500ish plus tip. If you decide to do that and stay, I also know of a cool houseboat a Mississippi guy has there. PM if interested.
