Not going to be a popular opinion, but I am sick of the craft beer craze... Really craft anything. Every time someone gives me some Curly Mustache Lager Weiss, it tastes as ****** as the swill I made with my Dad in our Mr. Beer kit in high school. I am going to assume it's a lot like the liquor biz.

A friend of mine who is a manufacturer of craft vodka, whiskey, rum, and moonshine explained that it's mostly ********. When he worked for a distributor 15-20 years ago, a guy named Tito was begging him to buy 1 more pallet of his cheap vodka... Now Tito's vodka is all the rage, but like most others it is just cheap ingredients. Tito's buys bulk alcohol, runs it through his stills to blend it, and it's all marketing from there. People have this image of Tito working his corn fields and hand selecting the best kernels. Nope. Tanker trucks are backing into his warehouse with the "handmade vodka."

Fast forward 10 years and my friend sees how easy it is and sets up his own shop, a very successful one as well. They now have 20 employees and are pushing 5 million in sales. All there stuff is bulk alcohol, blended or distilled, and repacked in cool bottles.

Apparently everyone does it that isn't a huge brand.

Here's the link if you want to get started.
https://ultrapure-usa.com/services/distilleries-blenders-bottlers/

Check out pricing. A fifth of vodka cost $.60. You run it through your still for a few hours to make it "craft" and put it in your cool bottles to wholesale it for $12.00.

Back to beer. I have no inside knowledge like liquor, but I am fairly confident that a handful of of mega corps control the malt, barley, hopps, and other beer grain supplies. They are going to keep the best stuff for themselves and sell the rest to the little guys at a profit. Craft beer is just recipes of likely to be lesser ingredients brewed in surely less capable equipment. Some may find a real niche, but most are bottles of near piss with emo artwork labels. The success of the craft beer industry is driven by the infestation of douchebaggery that plagues our society. Many will drink a bottle of rotten vinegar and pretend to like it to be the first to find a new brew...

As for me, I will have a Miller Lite all summer. When I want a little something different this fall, I will check out what Sam Adams or Shiner have going on.

Craft beer is one of the finer things in life. You either don't like or you love it.
I am a big fan of IPA's but no so much for all the crazy new beers coming out.
But to each his own, if you make a good beer people will buy it.

Craft beer > a tasteless miller lite Just like Caymus Cabernet > Yellow Tail, Pappy Van Winkle > Jim Bean and a Filet > Top Sirloin..

True, but there are many other options than just the generic ****** American light beer. I love a good craft as much as the next guy (especially sours), but what I more often find myself craving are Red Stripe, St. Pauli's Girl, Guinness, Becks, Abita Amber, Rolling Rock, Narragansett, Dixie Beer, Kirin Ichiban, Modelo Negra, etc.

I loath IPA's....but I loath IPA snobs even more.

Hahaha. Sorry for the hijack. I just started looking at the names of those beers and lost my mind.

No problem. Miller Lite (bottle) here also-over 30 years-was low carb when there were no low carbs- and can't remember ever having a craft beer.

I love craft beer but I hate people who are beer snobs and act like their taste of beer is higher class than yours. There’s a fine line of both. I’m a fan of trying new beers and I’m also a fan of sitting around with the guys with a 30 rack of Bud Light

You are dead wrong about craft beer. It's nothing like your buddy and his fake craft alcohol.
Many grow their own hops or have their own purveyor. Craft breweries actually get the better quality ingredients than the big boys and it cost more.
That is why it's called craft brew. They do not get leftovers.
You seem to be the real douche here..

While there are many "Craft Distilleries" out there that do use Neutral Grain Spirits from much larger distilleries to cut corners and cost, there are way more that do not and that segment is growing. As far as beer goes, the big boys have their own supplies of malt and hops and do not share, but their ingredients are far from anything better than what us small breweries get our hands on. This is mainly because since the fall of prohibition they have continued to find ways to cut costs as much as possibly while making a lighter profile of beer. The base malt I use, is superior to the base malt the Budweiser uses, the spend the money on equipment upfront to process it, so they save on ingredients.

I am not saying that you shouldn't enjoy their products, but thats not what the Craft beer movement is about, its about drinking local and having more options. We are about to put out a light lager for that reason, there is no reason not to the like the style, but I prefer to spend my money in this segment with local places instead of massive foreign owned conglomerates, its just a personal choice.

There are many that are suffering from craft fatigue and are not excited about the next triple IPA or imperial s'more stout, which is why we, as local independent brewers, provide a ton of options so we can fit everyone's palate. We enjoy a simple lager just as much, if not more, than the Hazy Double Dry Hopped IPA.

In the end, to each their own, have a drink, have a beer, or don't, cheers!

Thanks for the education. I think you nailed my problem.. craft fatigue. I live in a major city and it's getting carried away... A bbq joint opened a few years ago down the road, but they don't call it bbq... It's handcrafted, small batch, smoked meats on the sign.

Anyway, I appreciate anyone trying to make it right, hell I joked about it but my Mr Beer kit was badass. I think there are people who truly enjoy complex heavy beers... Then there are pretentious douchbags that ruin it for everyone. The hipster version of wine swirl, sniff, and swish guy... My apologies to all who do not wear a chain on their wallet and ride a Vespa.

IPAs used to be good but now they've gotten like hot sauce. No one cares about flavor they just want to make the hottest hot sauce and the hoppiest beer they can. I'm pretty much a Yeungling only now. I'll occasionally get something different but I avoid IPAs as much as possible.

My town is filthy with the craft beer/wine snobs. I've never been a big beer or wine guy since my younger days. I like beer okay as long as it is very cold or cold on tap. I have to just be in the mood for a bottle of wine.

There are about four or five of the craft beers I like but I never keep any at home, just have them out at the pubs eating wings or such.

I prefer tequila, mescal, rum or bourbon.

Remember, America before the craft beer phase took off, was the worlds worst beer maker. Beer makers were and still are allowed to add chemicals to prematurely boost the alcohol content in place of the natural process which causes the flavoring of the beer to occur. To compensate for the rice and chemical brew, the beer imitation needs to be excessively chilled to kill the real taste. Many countries disallow the chemical stimulant to be added to beer by law. Because of the new kids on the block, the U.S. went from worst to first. There is nothing snobbish about rejecting substandard beer. Too many Americans have been exposed to bad beer and do not know better

I love ghost trains IPL (switchmans stash) but I also love bud light and michelob ultra and fat tire.

Tito’s vodka is good. Couldn’t care less how it’s made. Mix it up in the toilet for all I care as long as it’s good and isn’t killing me (any more than any other alcohol).

I sell beer for a living, craft beer is a pain in my ***. Every brewery we pick up thinks they’re going to take over the market and what happens is they either don’t have the capital to stay alive and fold or they try expanding too fast and can’t supply their initial footprint.

But their beer tastes better than anything else you sell. I have never dunk American mass market beer and likely never will. I would drink wine or imported beer first.... and have for years before Mississippi partially joined the modern world. That being said I love good craft beer.

Well said. Ill gladly order and try any craft beer or local brew as long as it isnt an IPA.
IPA beers jumped the shark long ago. Its like hot wings at this point- its a contest to see who can make em hottest.
17 good taste, lets make em blazing hot!
17 good taste, lets make it disgustingly hoppy!

I think the biggest draw of the craft / mid-level production beer is the variety and the fact that you don’t have to drink a million of them to catch a buzz. Drinking 2-3 in the 6-7% range is all I need to be good for the evening, and beats the hell out of trying to pound a sixer of Bud or Miller just to catch a slight buzz (snd I feel a hell of a lot better the next day too). Those beers still have their place, but for me its only when I’m out on the water for hours on end, at a ballgame, or some other long term and/or hot weather situation where the heavier stuff doesn’t go down so well.

Also, there’s a lot of really good beer out there that isn’t the mass produced blue bloods but isn’t really “craft” either. Talking about your Sierra Nevadas, Goose Island, Founders, Dogfish Head, etc. The only real craft stuff I get is the local stuff here in Huntsville, and thats mainly because the microbreweries are the **** and fun to hang out at, and I like supporting the local economy (and the beer is pretty good too).

I'd say any beer, craft or otherwise, needs to be taken on its own merits. There are good IPAs and Bad ones. The only constant I have ever seen in tasting beer is tha American mass market beer stinks...literally.

Not all craft beer is high alcohol. If you are looking for the cheapest drunk than standard beer or cheap wine or whisky is your drink,

A friend of mine who has a brewery in Mississippi isn’t a fan of the term “craft beer.” His brewery makes some great beer though.

Miller Lite is a good summer beer - though of the major producers, I prefer Coors Light. I’ll be drinking more goses though (Mississippi has breweries that make great goses).

I hate it when breweries go too far, too fast. A brewery I liked to visit in Indiana where I have family recently announced that they were closing their taproom but still producing beer (I think it’s a mistake on their part because the taproom often is the best way that brewery folks and consumers can communicate with one another). A little over a year ago, that same brewery announced that they weren’t going to serve food any longer.

I’m not looking for the cheapest drunk, or even to get drunk period in most cases. I’m talking about feeling pretty good but not completely shitfaced after a few drinks with dinner or sitting on the back patio. Also, drinking something with some good flavor that doesn’t get stale after you are halfway through the first one is important.
