How exactly you get to the point of having that reputation is a bit of a nebulous concept, but I’ve been seeing it for years. Once teams get a reputation that precedes them for being a “tough, physical defense”, the officials let them away with a lot more contact. Pitino’s Louisville teams and a lot of Michigan State teams with Izzo are other examples.
