Finally, we play a team that is going to show us just how good (or bad) we are. I'm
hoping we can hang with Cincy and pull it out. Just hope we don't lay an egg

Cincy is gonna be a reality check I’m afraid. I watched them today. They will beat us by double digits

I seem to remember beating another really good Cincinnati team about 12 years ago. Just saying...

Have we played them since the 1996 final four?

I feel like maybe 1 time in the mid to late 2000s but I could be very wrong.

Last time we played UC was in the 2008 SEC/Big East challenge. We ran into a buzzsaw and they beat us by 34 at a tourney in Las Vegas in December 2001.

The above poster is misremembering the year but the last time we beat Cincy was during our Final Four run 21 years ago(22 in march). I think that Cincy team was without Kenyon Martin too.

We have the talent to compete. We have to play really hard on defense, value the basketball and shoot reasonably well. Those are all things we're capable of, but not consistent with. Hopefully the good coaching I know they're receiving will start to sink in.

It was the 1996 Regional Championship in Lexington, Elite Eight game to reach the Final Four. They were the 2 seed.

We had just beaten the 1 seed, UConn with Ray Allen, in the previous game. We avoided the 4 seed UCLA (the 95 champs, who knocked us out in the Sweet Sixteen) when Princeton knocked them out in the 1st Round. We dominated Princeton.

For the youngsters on here, the toughest game the 96 team had in the run to the Final Four was in the 1st Round vs VCU (coached by Sonny Smith I think). We trailed pretty late in that one. I don't think we trailed in a game again until the Syracuse loss in New York.

Ah, memories.

Didn't that Cincy team have some future NBA players as well. That game against Syracuse was rough. Dampier seemed to have butterfingers.

Theirs a conspiracy that Bullard threw the game. I really doubt that, but his History puts that question in the air.

I remember that 2001 game. They beat us like a drum. I remembered they had a guy get 40 or so on us that night. Looked it up. His name was Steve Logan. Averaged 22 a game for a 31-4 Cincy team that year so they were studs. Huggins has had some great teams to never win it all.

Just did a bit more research. I know why I remember that loss so well now. We were 11-0 coming in, but hadn't really played anybody yet so it was going to be a good barometer. Oops, sound familiar.

That ended up being a nice season for MSU. 27-8, won the SEC Tourney with Mario Austin. Got beat by a lower seeded Texas team on what was basically their homecourt in Dallas in 2nd Round of Tourney.

Edited to add that Steve Logan was only 5'10", but led a preseason unranked Cincy team to a #1 seed in 02. Was first team All American. Outscored USM in a game by himself (41-39). Cincy was upset by UCLA in NCAA 2nd Round that year. BBall is cruel.

They had some stars, but I don't think any of them had long NBA careers. They were known as an extremely physical team, but Damp, Big Country, Bullard and Co could really bang. Wasn't an issue.

We really had three NBA caliber players on that team. Damp had a long career, Jones would have if his head was better and I'm convinced if Wilson had been three inches taller he could have made it.

Boy, that team was tough, but very limited off the bench. Our girls may need to watch some videos of that run to see how great players can make a run with a thin bench. Then again, they already know how it's done.

We played them in late 08, as part of the SEC/Big East challenge. It was the night after Kennedy's "Internashunl...altercaaayshun"

Danny Fortson was Cincinnati’s main star in 1996. He had a decent NBA career. Kenyon Martin was a Freshman on that team.

Fortson and Damon Flint were stars.

Before that game, all the media talked about were how strong the Cincinnati players were (and they were - Fortson squatted some ridiculous weight ...). They interviewed Dampier about how we would match up with Cincy's strength before the game, and he said "I mean, we have weights at Mississippi State too...". Richard Williams still talks about that too.

Wish someone could put that game on YouTube.

Kenyon Martin came along the next year. They had Fortson and then three tough guards, Flint, Legree and Darnell Burton. I think we really shut down their shooting on D.

My son and I will be there in Maroon. Jacob Evans is one of the matchup issues I foresee. Sort of a tweener (G/F) at 6'6".

Will be an interesting trip, as Cinci is recruiting my son (swimmer) and want us to sit with the swim team. Not sure if I can put on a social smile face when it comes to my Bulldogs and bball. haha.

Playing @ NKU will interesting as we saw the state of UC's basketball arena when we did an official there earlier this season. It's a mess, but is going to be very nice. The Cinci campus is one of the more interesting ones I have visited. Very compact and within the city's confines. Metro yet separate. The football stadium is surrounded by administrative buildings, making it very unique.

We only have one top 100 win and that #97 Jacksonville State. Don’t confuse being undefeated with being good. I think we are much better this year but will lose by 15 or more unless we are making 3s at a good clip

Looks like we'll be a 12-15 point underdog. I'll be surprised if the line is under 10.

That said, I think we have a chance and will keep it under 10, but first road game vs tough opponent means anything could happen.

That was the beginning of the end. We were number 15 nationally and got screwed by a BS Sidney technical with 30 seconds left that basically won the game for Baylor. We were winning before that. After that loss, the wheels fell off, and the rest is history.

Not disagreeing with your premise, but we currently have 3 RPI top 100 wins - #83 Stephen F Austin, #89 North Dakota State, & #86 Dayton.

I do not think we are a very good basketball team right now. We are not a bubble team currently & may not be an NIT team, but our last 5 team would have already lost at least one maybe two game so it is PROGRESS. Hopefully we start to play better as the level of competition improves. Cincinnati's RPI is currently #111.

Which is one more top 100 win than Cinci currently possesses...

That said, Kenpom has us losing by 11 with a 14% chance to win the game.

It'll be another small setback if we lose, but a huge shot in the arm if we win... We get this one game and we're going to make it through the noncon undefeated. Arky will like the Hump a lot less if that plays out...
