It should be open 17ing season boys. Let’s pass the collection plate around the room and go get us some stud 4-5 Star wide receivers. What a damn joke that was.

What?

They're about to be in contention for last in the West for the next 3-4 years, including this year.

Disagree completely. Perhaps it’s not as bad as some wanted, but look at the trajectories of the two programs and what the cloud of the NCAA investigation has done to Ole Miss the last two season, and likely will continue to do for 3-4 more seasons.

Once they get through next year there won't be a cloud. The bowl ban next year is the only cloud moving forward.

The NCAA is toying with becoming no longer relevant. Completely toothless.

Cam Newton was bad. This is worse.

Why have a penalty matrix if you're clearly going to balk from using it?

I'll expect other schools at the bottom to look at this and smile...I'm looking at you, Rocky Top.

Wrong. Only seniors can transfer. With no additional scholarship losses, there will be less desire to transfer.

Looking at Wolken's tweets that quote the COI, you would have thought that the NCAA was just going to hammer OM.

COI: “This case is symptomatic of an out-of-control culture that has existed for decades.”

COI report: "Even the head coach acknowledged that upon coming to Mississippi, he was surprised by the "craziness" of boosters trying to insert themselves into his program"

“The case was the result of a culture at the university where rules violations were acceptable … and reminiscent of similar Ole Miss infractions cases in the past.” Wowzers.

But that doesn't seem to be the case at all. OM got off incredibly light.

The NCAA should have just said “This case is symptomatic of an out-of-control culture that has existed for decades but we're not going to do anything about it.”

Yes, but they still have scholarship limitations next year, continued probation, a questionable choice in a head coach, and a rival poised to take advantage this year and next, thereby likely expanding the gap between the two schools. I don’t think the cheating really paid off for them, and I see no benefit to changing our recruiting tactics as a response to this.

They skated.

By far the most damaging thing in this deal is what they have done to themselves with the lawsuits, tape recordings, and leaks....

It's weird. The language in report is harsh, but the penalties aren't. But the NCAA has recently been heavy on the show causes, and lighter on the penalties for the team. I guess they feel that way, they're not penalizing the current players as much. But coaches are a dime a dozen, especially assistants, so there's no real penalty that way. Well, at least Freeze lost his job.

So getting in trouble and being banned from bowls and having recruiting restrictions and some schollies lost is a good idea?

No. Thanks.

Your post lacks context. Look at what they got from the cheating. Went from the worst team in the SEC to national prominence, including a couple of NY6 bowls, and a Sugar Bowl win. Who wouldn't exchange what they got for cheating for what they were?

The people writing our checks need to take notice. Dont worry about getting caught, it will only cost you maybe 1 scholarship if you commit a Level 1 violation. Hell Mullen self imposed a dang 5-10 scholarship reduction just by attrition on the roster.

Other than beating Alabama, and one year with 5 turnovers Bama gifted them, they got blown out by TCU and beat Okie State in the Sugar Bowl.

I wouldn't call that NATIONAL PROMINENCE. They also have horrible recruiting last year and this year and scholly limitations and other penalties and LOST THEIR COACH!!

Maybe you're the one who has a hard time with context.

And he's free to get another immediately. The NCAA hurt themselves more than they did Ole Miss. They had a slam dunk case of a head coach meeting with a recruit and a booster and they let him walk.

I agree. Granted you didn't ask me for my opinion, but Ole Miss has done more harm to themselves (via the administration and desperate water carriers in the media) than these sanctions will. That and the dragging of the feet by the NCAA hurt us a lot. In the grand scheme of things, I am ecstatic over the sanctions as an Ole Miss fan. The bowl ban will be appealed, also. Not sure if it will do any good, but there's at least a small chance that gets removed.

This was a landmark case for all of college football, for a lot of reasons. And it was handled incredibly bad by all parties involved. The NCAA investigators, and more than that, by Ole Miss.

You ask their fans after Nutt was fired "would you take an ok year and three good years, including two NY6 bowl appearances, (although I guess that wasn't a thing yet then?) in exchange for two bad recruiting classes (basically last year's and this year's), and then 4 scholarships lost in the next year?" I think they would have jumped all over that.

They are going to be hurting in two years from teh bad recruiting classes, but at that point, they can ramp cheating back up again and start the process over. That's not as good as just have a good administration and coach that doesn't need to cheat more than everybody else, but it's a hell of a lot easier to do.

In the last 5 or so years, Ole Miss has had no more national prominence than State - they’ve won fewer games on the field, missed bowls the last two season, and will have to vacate some of those wins - plus Ole Miss is on at least a 3-year (counting next season) downward trajectory. I just don’t see how this should encourage us to change the way we do things.

this is correct. UM football program escaped all but clean. UM as the institution got hammered. The real penalties inside the ADep was the penalty of not getting penalties...

but a high school coach friend of mine in JPS told me that every coach coming through recruiting, even outside the sec, is using the RR lawsuit against UM in recruiting....and what do you think will happened with that lawsuit? absolutely nothing in the end. It's all about being 'right'. The lawsuit is hurting them and they don't even get it.

The NCAA doesn’t take into account the effect this had on the spirit of fair play either. No way! NONe! That they beat us in 2014 or 2015 without that 2013 class.

Would be really hard for me to argue with any of that. It seems pretty reasonable to me.

I understand Terry Warren's reasons for the lawsuit (if in fact he didn't do what he was accused of; which I have no clue about, nor does anyone else) but I definitely don't think it will help Ole Miss in any way. I also don't think it will hurt State in any way.

I can also see how schools would use that against Ole Miss. And let's face it.. regardless of how Ole Miss wants to spin it.. when 8-9 rival schools are telling a recruit the same thing, your narrative probably won't convince him otherwise. Recruiting has and will continue to suffer from it. And that's where the major punishment will come from. The sanctions aren't necessarily that severe, but the damage done to the perception of Ole Miss football will have long-term damage.

I think the COI tried to give the appearance of hammering Ole Miss, while also recognizing the concerns associated with the 2nd NOA. And I think anyone that's trying to be halfway reasonable would recognize there were some reasons for them to be concerned with the 2nd NOA. The first one? Not so much. We deserved anything we got from that. But the 2nd one seemed a little desperate on the NCAA's part. Just my two cents worth of Black Bear/LandShart/Ole Piss thoughts.

LMAO at you thinking going from 1-15 SEC and no bowls to 3 years later going to the Peach, then the Sugar is not easily making the ultimate price paid worth it.

Until the 2018 class, overall OM has had much higher-ranked classes than we have. Even the times we were a little higher, it wasn't by much. With only one more year of bowl ban, the 2018 class is not going to give a damn about that, so I expect their 2018 class to start improving now that the uncertainty is gone.

They will probably be allowed to count some of the schollie reductions against previous years where they did not sign as many as they could have. So the net effect may well be that they only realize 3 fewer schollies per year for 3 years.

W-O-R-T-H I-T!

Consider where they were. 1-15 SEC. They have since been to a Peach, won a Sugar, and got to 2 additional lower-tier bowls in a 4-yr stretch.

Even with the 2-yr bowl ban, that would be 4 bowls (2 NY) in 6 years. If there is not an exodus of players from that program due to one more year of guaranteed no bowl, then they could very much get back to going to bowls year after next. 3 fewer schollies for 3 years is not going to preclude that.

Now consider all that cheating helped them hurt our own recruiting. Imagine what we might have done had they "played it straight" all this time.

Worth it a million times over, even with the financial penalties.

with the infractions committee playing musical chairs all the time, its a crapshoot and you never really know what you will get, who will be on the committee, or even if they will enforce their own guidelines. our luck we would get 35/3/4

We're the scholly reductions light? Yes. Was it worth it? No. Would I trade places with them? 17 NO! Will things get worse talent wise before they get better? HELL YES Will they cheat again and get caught by 2020? Possibly.

The NCAA will be watching and taking complaints of cheating against them very seriously.

This is basically like a jury convicting a defendant of first degree murder and the judge comes back and gives out a 1 year jail sentence. Penalties absolutely doesn't fit the OM crimes. I don't understand how an LOIC can be upheld and only end up in 13 schollies. That's insane.

It might have been worth it to Ole Miss from where they were, but it’s not worth it to State to start using the same tactics now, and wouldn’t have been worth it in 2010.

I would not. I would not want my program to be associated with this kind of behavior.

I hope our coaches and admin feel the same way.

That is the one reason to keep Matt Luke around. The players seem to like him. If he can prevent as few as five transfers from leaving he'll probably keep UM in shape to make it back to bowl eligibility in 2019.
