I joined bc I'm wanted to participate...never been to a game in Athens. Our atmosphere was pretty electric vs LSU. Just curious as to how that compared.

They play "Wheel in the Sky" at the end of the 3rd quarter, and their stadium cups smell a little different, but other than that pretty much the same.

Georgia has one of the most overhyped atmospheres in the country. I think the town of Athens GA is nice and it's everything Oxford MS dreams of being but isn't. As far as the atmosphere itself it was meh, nothing special, and it wasn't really loud either. I'd consider it mild

Texas A&M, LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi State all beat this stadium by a mile. Maybe I'm spoiled because our atmosphere is one of the best in the country, but I think anyone that was at the game last night could tell you it wasn't hostile beyond a few UGA fans barking like maniacs, UGA fans booing the refs for a few plays.

Really DWS is a much nicer facility as well, the jumbotron at Sanford was awful. All of their "hype" was playing old time music. And their fans didn't really have a.cheer that stood out to me.

It was a fun trip and I would recommend you checking it out for yourself. As any SEC Stadium you have the opportunity to check it out for yourself.

One minor note the PA Announcer said "the like of scrimmage is" and didn't do a good job with down and distance and looking at the down and distance.

The UGA had a pretty good tailgating though. Really everything outside of the stadium at UGA is nice. But it's not my favorite.

Pretty much agree with all of this. The "boo"ing was spectacular, the best I think I've ever experienced. (This was after the fumble was not reversed after review). But no special cheers or memorable moments after that. The UGA fans hold up their smart phones instead of four fingers at the start of the 4th quarter...it looked cool at night, but I didn't really understand it.

Sanford stadium is a dump. And it faces East-West instead of North-South. It was easy to get a cowbell in, though. Too bad I didn't need it.

Sanford doesn't seem to have done any upgrades in quite a while. I would think they would put premium seats in the end zone where the visitor section and student sections are.

You do understand that we hold our phones up , with flashlights on, at the beginning of the 4th quarter also, right? It's a modern lighter.
Please tell me you knew that.

I'm not sure they can do much expanding on their West Endzone without removing Sanford Dr, which is an elevated road right there. They are currently building a new home locker room under that endzone, and I think there are plans of a new video board over there, but I'm really not sure what else they have room for.

NO I did not. Haven't been to a home game in a few years. I still don't understand it; who holds up a lighter at a football game?

Georgia this past Saturday was my 13th SEC stadium to attend for a game. It was very loud and had an electric atmosphere. I would put it near the top of the league. I'd also put ours up there. I thought LSU in Starkville was comparable to Saturday night in Athens.

I realize we're spoiled in this area, but the scoreboard/screen was very lacking. PA was low quality, hard to understand a lot of the time. And the seats were very small in my section.

So it's a 90,000 seat stadium that seats 60,000 comfortably?

I was there. It was my 11th SEC stadium. I'm lacking A&M, Vandy, and Fayetteville (have been to Little Rock).

To me, the volume was average. Nothing like LSU. Auburn, Bama, and Florida are louder. Similar to South Carolina. Of course, Davis Wade with the bells is easily the loudest.

The stadium is old and unremarkable. Premium seats are stuck at the top, obviously an afterthought. There's a railroad track and some back alley road on the East side. Lots of fans come from town walking down this railroad line. Weird.

The gameday atmosphere is like the mid-90's. They don't do much. Music is weak. Video programming is lazy and unoriginal. One featured pregame video had no audio. It was just old highlight clips and the crowd half-heartedly cheered along. They don't seem to try too hard.

Town is great though. Maybe the best. It's different than most. It's old. This school was founded BEFORE the Constitution was ratified. It has a French Quarter feel. The occasional raw sewage smell and lots of homeless/panhandlers with lots of restaurants and bars. Probably 3 parallel streets and maybe 5 blocks long, all immediately North of the campus and about a mile from the stadium. Very pedestrian friendly. But everybody tailgates South of the stadium which I was told is by rule. The old part of campus is adjacent to downtown and they don't want tailgaters trashing it, so it's off limits which is unfortunate because it's the coolest part, prettiest, and right between town and the stadium.

I've seen Mississippi State play in every stadium in the SEC multiple times and I would consider it middle of the pack as far as atmosphere.
However, the flow into the stadium is awful. As a visitor, once you get inside, its even worse as the major access point to the visiting seats and/or end zone seats for students is a extremely limited and a challenge to get into. Scott Field has a great pedestrian flow around it, Sanford Stadium and Ben Hill Griffin to name a couple do not because they are surrounded by structures and other obstacles.
The jumbotron comments are spot on as anyone in that same end has limited to no visibility of the board.

well i had a great time. i was also with some pretty big Georgia boosters. and they go all out. we were there all day and tailgated on top of the parking area by the student center. their Dawg walk is pretty cool.

we sat in a suite and it was pretty nice. nothing like what DWS has. their stadium experience to me wasn't close to ours in my opinion. but i also had their worst fan yelling at cussing me the whole game. and it was a she. this lady was about 55 but looked 70. i was never out of line, just cheering for my dawgs before the game. after it all started, i even asked everyone around us if i was out of line or obnoxious, and they all said i was good. she was with 3 other women and at different points throughout the night, each one of them apologized. she took my picture at least 7 times that i saw. so after about the 3rd quarter i had had enough of being called a mother 17'er and piece of ****, that i told her i didn't know how old she was, but she was acting like a 18 year old brat and looking like a 85 year old hag. didnt go over as well as you would think, but all the georgia fans, including her friends, thought it was hilarious. she soon left. i know every fan base has a few that you would rather just stay at home, but i thought i handled it pretty well considering the large amount of alcohol that had entered my body all day and during the game. it was actually pretty nice of all the georgia fans to take my side. several older georgia fans stood with me behind the seats and watched the game and kept apologizing for her.

Yeah, their gameday left much to be desired. Echoing everyone's sentiments about it not feeling unique, not being particularly loud, and the stadium having several issues.

I really do think that the NCAA needs to have a sit down with their director of gameday operations though, because when our center had his hand on the ball, their obnoxious PA guy was screaming into the microphone at obviously increased volumes compared ot when Georgia had the ball, and their band continued playing almost up until the snap. Far more annoying than cowbells even have the capability of being.

Stadium felt old. Nosebleed concourse didn't have a real concession stand. Just not impressive at all.

Athens is really, really cool though. Like, it is what Oxford claims to be and what I would like our downtown to eventually be, especially now that the new alcohol laws have passed.

Athens is second to none as far as the downtown area coupled with its proximity to the school.

Friday night and Saturday morning and afternoon downtown was great. Starkville has nothing like it. Its basically what Oxford wants to be, but about 4 times as large in terms of bars, restaurants and people.

Game atmosphere was good, but to compare it to last week wouldn't be fair since the game really wasn't in question most of the second half, and they essentially slept walked through it. Obviously would have liked to see a much more competitive game to get a better feel.

THIS! That was ridiculous and because we run no huddle he didn't even begin his 7-10 second "THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRD DOWWWWWWWWWWWN AND FIVE(or whatever)!!!!!!!! thing at maximum volume until we had been over the ball for several seconds. Fair is fair. If we are going to be held accountable for cowbells then by johnny I expect everyone else to play by the rules too!

Stadium was cool. Enjoyed "Saturday night's alright for fighting" at the beginning. PA announcer has to be the worst on earth. Video board sucked. Volume was no LSU, but was loud. They had plenty to cheer about from start to finish. I saw 15-20 OM fans walking around pre-gamein OM gear which was pathetic. Even witnessed a Hobby Lobby cheer by 4 of them at a bar Friday night. So next time one ever mentions obsession to me.....

I swear they sent out mass communication to their fans about greeting us. From 20 to 60 years old I bet 70 different people came up and thanked us for coming to Athens. Hoped we had a great time, etc. It's the total opposite of Baton Rouge and was nice, but after about the 20th time it got weird. It was like they had memorized a customer service script.

Their stadium is average. The only real compliment I can give is that it's bigger than ours. Their concourses are a nightmare. Borderline fire hazard in some areas. Their crowd was great. Mind boggling loud? No. After listening to cowbells all my life, my perception of loud is jacked up. I think LSU, Bama, and AU are definitely louder. The hospitality was fantastic. I was actually shocked at the lack of trash talking. Seemed like a church crowd. The bars and restaurants around the stadium are good. Imagine the Cotton District x25. It's not "right next to the stadium" like everyone says. It's actually probably a little closer than the Cotton District to the DWS. If you count the fact you don't have to scale hills, the walk to the CD from the stadium may be easier. None of the bars are terribly unique. 4 walls and bar with some sort of theme. If the crowd in the bar is good, you will have a good time. If not, bounce to the next bar till you find a crowd you like. There are lots hole in the wall eateries that are great as well. If you like going to away games, its a top 5 SEC experience for sure.

In the interest of full disclosure, I've only been to DW, Vandy, the Swamp, OM, in addition to UGA. I only went because I live about two hours away and had never been there. Having said all that, I will never go back. It was loud and the UGA fans were enthusiastic. I have to say that I was not verbally abused although there were three UGA students, two of them female, immediately behind me who screamed all night long and threw out f-bombs every other word. Very disrespectful I thought. The stadium was hot, humid, with no air stirring - down in a hole. My wife said the overall smell reminded her of a men's locker room at a gym. Concourses are narrow and concessions not easily accessible.

Walking up and down hills was a pain. Parking is atrocious and I've never been to a place that was more difficult to get in and out of. Without a GPS, I'm sure I would still be wandering around trying to get out of there. I've been in downtown Athens a few times on my Harley and have never found it easy to navigate either.

I'm sure the natives all love it as I do MSU, but it's now off my bucket list and I have no desire to ever return.

Just my opinion but one I happen to agree with.
