at this point, with wins over UNC, Auburn and Alabama, unless UK falls off a cliff and has a St. Peters type game in the tournament, then whether you are in support of or against Calipari

IMO...

based on the huge contract that holds UK hostage, he has done enough for the administration to justify him being here another year. They can look you in the eye and pretend to believe that they have faith in Cal to get it done rather than just admit its more financially advantageous to keep him.

You can sense the tone change on the board here and generally many fans, even if Kentucky gets bounced in the sweet 16, many will look back on a team that was the only one to beat 3 of the top 10 net teams. They'll talk about Z not playing until mid season, injuries that never had the team at full strength, and the development of Edwards -and finally the recruiting class coming next year along with the 2 guys returning from this years team as a reason to say that next year should be a time of optimism within the program. If that doesn't work, they'll talk about parity and how its unreasonable, based on their vast years of basketball knowledge to expect UK to beat LSU on the road or to win the SEC more than once every 8 years.

and the UK administration will love those fans for changing the narrative on Kentucky basketball so they can save money.

Hurley > Sampson > Drew > Pearl > Lloyd > Oats
I think to move the needle it needs to be one of 3 people in this order:
Hurley>Donovan>Vogel all super long shots.

Vogel being the wildcard but I believe he creates excitement and is more than capable. Sampson, Drew, Oats, Pearl and Lloys IMO are all lateral or backwards hires. It would be more than likely they'd fair in a similar way Cal has leaving out the 9-16 outlier season of course. It's a mute point as Cal isn't going anywhere this season barring a total meltdown.

was reading on the UL board, someone said that Sampson is over 65 and he is setting up his son to be the coach in waiting at Houston.

Sounds like he'd be a bad fit for a number of reasons.

Maybe from now on, fans should answer these polls with the names of the coaches of the next 3 teams we’re about to face!;)
(writing during 2nd half of MS State game) Could someone at the game please pass Cal a note that a new poll has been taken and Chris Jans’ name was on the list?🙏
UPDATE: thanks to whoever passed the note!😉

Why though? What has he done at BYU to warrant being hired at KENTUCKY? It doesn’t matter to me that he played here honestly, I don’t think that should ever be a factor when hiring a coach
I think he's done a great job in a limited recruiting area, in a short period of time.. I would rather have him 10 times more than Baylor's coach who has been there 22 seasons with 3 decent teams

I swear some of y’all want to hire ex-players because of a sense of nostalgia and not because of their coaching abilities.
He's actually got pretty good coaching abilities. I don't want a guy with a title somewhere else personally. There's no candidate head n shoulders above him that would make me change my mind.
Who is better

Why has Drew had two massive transfers lately?? Matthew Meyer to Illinois and LJ Cryer to Houston. Both cited needing a change. If you can’t keep them happy at Baylor, good luck juggling all the balls at KY.

Surprised no one has mentioned Lamont Paris from Sourh Carolina just had to beat UT at home to have part of the title unfortunately lost. But for the talent he had there he seems to be doing really well there…

Calipari has had as many high profile transfers leave as anyone. With NIL and no sit out rule, transferring is just the new norm.

More impressively: They lost their top 3 scorers. Drew still has Baylor as a 3 seed and in contention for a 2. They were 20th in the pre-season poll, and they’re currently sitting at 11.

Todd Golden @ Florida should get a look . Louisville expected to prioritize Drew, Donovan , Golden and Mussleman….I’d bet $20 one of those is hired by Louisville, the question is which of them would take it

Donovan isn't coming back to college, especially for Louisville.

Scott Drew would be a mediocre hire.

Based on what?

The dude won a National Championship. At Baylor. Baylor is not a basketball school. If he can win a championship there, he will do very well at a blue blood school. Unless you don’t believe Kentucky helps a coach more than Baylor.

Baylor was on pace for 3 straight 1 seeds if the 2020 tourney wasn’t cancelled. They’ll be a 2 or 3 seed this year.

Does a guy need MULTIPLE National titles to be a good hire? Or you’re more impressed by a guy that hasn’t shown he can win a championship?

If you replaced Donovan with Mick Cronin, your list would be pretty good. I still think Chris Beard would be the best fit.

Agreed . Some say Beard gave a promise to Ole Miss AD if he was hired , he’d give at least 2-3 yrs . He was toxic when he was hired and given a good opportunity…..but who knows if any of it is true or if beard would keep promise

I just think he would be a mediocre hire here. It’s not a guarantee he would do well at a blue blood, some coaches aren’t built for the spotlight and pressure of that. And you keep saying he did it at Baylor like it’s some mid major no name school. Baylor is in arguably the best basketball conference in the country and also in the state of Texas which is rich in talent and money.

He’s a decent coach and he had a great tournament run but aside from that one run it’s usually 10 losses seasons and flaming out in the tourney

Drew is considered a really good x’s & o’s guy in coaching circles, and he obviously can build a program as Baylor was way ,way down when he took over. He’s also a guy that does well with boosters and fans, they say. Nothing wrong with that guy.

Baylor is good now. Because of Scott Drew.
Baylor had FOUR tournament appearances before Drew. They have 11 with him, soon to be 12. He will have led Baylor to 75% of their tournament appearances. And their only National Championship.

Good for him, sounds like he should stay at Baylor

If cronin does go to Louisville then the big question is who does UCLA get.... thats a pretty high profile job
