People claim that kids no longer play for the schools, but rather the coaches. What does that say if one doesn't sign with UK? Yes, we're doing GREAT this year, but we've stunk it up for awhile before that. You're correct in what you're saying, but I think it's more than that just about the money.

IMO Boston was the worst 5* ever recruited and played at UK.

I totally agree with you. When watching him play most of the time, I just couldn't believe he was a 5* and like #2 in the class. I was scratching my head all season on that one.

Are you suggesting that he forgot how to recruit at a high level there for several years? Do you think most kids want to play for UK instead of Cal? Duke definitely doesn't duck and run when it comes to recruiting High School 5 stars. Duke however, does cast a smaller net, usually because they land anyone they recruit. Whereas Kentucky and Kansas cast a much larger net which means more misses.
But make no mistake about it, Duke has landed guys who they were not involved with at all and other schools like Kentucky were very involved with already. Zion being one, Banchero another.

I see both sides of this. Duke has absolutely beaten us for more recruits than we’ve beaten them for. But I agree with KAB cats that if Duke sees that Kentucky leads heavily for a recruit, they’ll back off. Cal won’t. If he thinks if he has a 10% chance with a kid, he’ll stick it out to the end. He’d rather get that 1/10. Duke (or coach K at least) would rather save face than lose out on the 9/10.

"Should" be. But we've seen these expectations can go before. I have been trying to learn to temper my expectations year to year, but it doesn't usually work.

I can’t see that team next year struggling a lot, to much firepower and that’s not even considering returnees and transfer portal. I hope Kentucky goes all in Peterson. A fland Peterson and Sheppard backcourt would be filthy

Sheppherd coming back would be huge. I think you all will end up with Dybantsa too, although that's not until the following year.

I like the thought of a UK backcourt that includes Sheppard, Fland, Johnson, and Perry; with Thiero/Knox/Burks at the 3/4; and Onyenso/Quaintance/Cyril down low.

Throw in at least one legit grad transfer at wing to help with the scoring load.

I think there's some uncertainty with the Duke faction in this because of how close they wanted to visit with him before his commitment Sunday night.

They are likely coming in to address any doubt that Baylor or UK placed in VJ's mind concerning minutes/roles/etc.

I actually still think Kentucky has a small shot. Cal visited VJ last weekend and I don't think he would have done that if they knew he was already set on Duke or Baylor.

I think he ends up at Duke, and perhaps UK can turn their attention to landing Knox and getting Johnson to reclassify.

A backcourt next season of Sheppard, Johnson, Fland, and Perry - plus a portal guard/wing - isn't the end of the world. Sheppard would be a NPOY candidate. Knox/Thiero/Burks at the 3/4 is also a solid trio. Quaintance would give us our elite frontcourt big man that we haven't had in a long time. Onyenso could be a SEC defensive player of the year candidate. Cyril offers a solid third big.

Add a wing from the portal and we're a top 10 team again. Obviously the key would be to get Sheppard back for a sophomore season, but I think that's doable.

Scoring could be a major issue next year if Sheppard leaves for the NBA. Cal does his best work with elite freshmen, and that's why I'm still holding on hope for Edegcombe.
