I enjoyed the music cover thread and thought this might be cool. I have a few favorite comedies that are riotous that are unknown to most.

1.) "Used cars" with Kurt Russell

2.) "Dead men don't wear plaid" with Steve Martin

3.) "History of the world part 1 with Mel Brooks

4.) "Little big man" with Dustin Hoffman (about as much a drama as comedy, but still hilarious)

I can't believe someone else saw thankskilling. Up there with jack frost where a murderous snowman took his carrot nose and coal eyes off his face, afixed them to his groin, and raped a chick.

Does anyone remember "the woman in red" with Gene Wilder? Damn funny

Lone Star... watch it, and you will see... it is the Texas "Snatch". If you don't know Snatch, or Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, or Rock n Rolla... you have been deprived.

Juno also is another

Foul Play, 1978
High Anxiety, 1977
Noises Off (movie), 1992
Burn After Reading, 2008-- was torn on whether to include this although I love the movie. It has an incredible ensemble cast that includes Brad Pitt, George Clooney, John Malkovich, and Tilda Swinton, so it might fall more under "unappreciated" than obscure.

I'm a big fan of the obscure comedy and probably have several dozen favorites over the years, but these came instantly to mind.

Some others:

Election, 1999 (one of the all time great dark, obscure comedies along with Burn)
What About Bob?,1991 (probably in a tiny minority on this but outside of Groundhog Day, my fav Bill Murray movie)
Ruthless People, 1986
Clerks, 1994 -- huge cult favorite so probably not obscure, but was groundbreaking for its time

Most of these movies I haven't watched in years but remember fondly. This thread has made me a little curious to watch again and see how they've held up over time.

Being John Malkovich
The Mouse That Roared
The Man Who Would Be King
(the last two are old, not sure if that makes them also more obscure)

I'll never forgive the Wolfchase Galleria Malco Theater for ruining my viewing of Being John Malkovich--the film malfunctioned in the last scene. This is definitely a movie that defines "obscure," though.

NO Mel Brooks Movie is obscure. Anybody that thinks that watch "The Twelve Chairs" That might be his most obscure movie. The Producers is obscure?

For this group posting these movies here are some you need to watch because obviously it is an age thing:

The Russians are Coming, The Russians Are Coming
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
If its Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium.
The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight (That is actually pretty obscure)
Kentucky Fried Movie
The Hot Rock

Honestly I really do think Young Frankenstein is obscure. There's so many people who have never seen or heard of it

It is number 13 in the American Film Institutes greatest comedies of all time. If that is obscure people are just not paying attention.

Dr. Strangelove - actually just about anything with Peter Sellers.
A Boy and His Dog - featuring a very young Don Johnson.
Jabberwocky - Obscure Monty Python.
Dead and Breakfast
Shaun of the Dead
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

I'm sure the American Film Institute is a fine collection of people, but Tootsie as the 2nd all time best comedy is mind boggling. And Fargo at #93, really? I would put it easily in the top 50 movies of all time regardless of genre, but what the 17 do I know. Sorry for the thread derail.

Kentucky Fried Movie is great. The "Enter the Dragon" sequence is spectacular. It was a Zucker Bros film who of course wrote the Naked Gun and Airplane classics
