Cal was patient. That turned out to be a good strategy in the end.

Fans tend to panic when we don’t have our roster completed by the end of April, that’s just the way it always is.

Coaches and coaching staffs can’t afford to panic and settle for lesser talent.

Cal could have grabbed a kid from Cupcake U as a transfer early in the Spring, but instead waited to see what would be available.

Cal was very selective in who he offered. He went for the best big man available (Dickinson) and two quality PF’s (Johnson, Kaluma). Those didn’t work out, but then a double digit scorer from a P5 school became available.

His patience paid off in this instance.
I was with you until you used cupcake, Cal and waited in the same sentence

Sadly I think the roster is done and Cals fine with it which isn't very bright. Now don't get me wrong if another Tre Mitchell falls out if the sky into his lap he'll probably take him. But before Huggie got popped it felt like Cals big strategy was Sonto reclass to make it 8 Freshman 2 sophomore sand Reeves, yikes. Mitchell falls from the sky no need to rush it now. I hope I'm wrong and another big is added to this roster so we don't have another year of one piece away. Which is where I think we are. One good center, space eater makes this team a real threat.

1. Until Somto is for 2023…then the roster is

Guards - Wagner Dilly Shep and Reeves…Hart is filling out roster
Forwards - Edwards Thiero Mitchell Burks (but I have a bard time seeing him vying for minutes)
Center - Ugo and Bradshaw….and Bradshaw can play forward as well

That ain’t a great team folks

It’s not a bad roster, if everything goes right.

Problem is, that rarely happens. Already we have the Bradshaw injury. And there’s no guarantee that all the Freshmen live up to expectations.

But on paper, you got a pretty good squad.

Wagner, Edwards, and Bradshaw are all top 10 recruits. They usually turn out to be pretty good for Cal. You can bring up Boston and Labissiere, but there are more that turned out like Wall, Cousins, Knight, AD, MKG, Fox, Monk, Bam, etc.

Reeves and Mitchell are both proven double digit scorers at this level.

That’s a good starting five, on paper.

Then throw in another 5-star guard (Dillingham) and another McD’s AA guard (Sheppard) in the backcourt.

In the frontcourt, two Sophomores with potential in Thiero (now up to 6’7-6’8-ish and stronger) and Onyenso.

Hart and Burks round things out.

That’s a pretty good roster.

On paper. And if everyone stays healthy.

We need another big, though. Especially with Bradshaw already hurt.

I don't think the roster is sufficient because there is more than just Boston and Labissiere of the Top 10ish who don't work out. Goodwin (raw but out of control), Poythress, Livingston, Clarke, Diallo, etc...

Plus fans can watch kids play a lot. Wagner, Edwards, Bradshaw.... are not on the same planet as Wall, AD, Gilchrist, Townes. They just aren't. Heck, Wagner was playing behind Top 40 kids in the 2024 class during a significant portions of the USA team event last summer. He looks better now than then but still....

College basketball continues to be older also (at least for one more year.) which hurts unless Cal can find a passion he hasn't had in awhile.

Bottom line, I think your comments a few days ago were correct, Cal's late flury (if you want to call it that) gives me confidence we can make the tournament but I have no expectation of moving beyond the 1st weekend with this roster...I simply do not believe (based on the limited game watching) that our "Top recruits" are that kind of elite. Hope I am wrong.
