I’m not satisfied with the roster exactly for the reason you apparently are – UK (one of if not the best program in CBB) has to rely on 4 of the top 10 ranked high school players. Freshmen aren’t good enough. That’s a generality, but it’s true often enough to be a rule for me. Their skills are not developed enough. They don’t shoot well enough. Their production is not consistent enough. Their basketball IQ is not high enough. And their bodies are not developed enough.
In my opinion, a team reliant on OAD freshmen has always has been a bad way to intentionally build a roster. If you’re not one the top CBB programs (e.g., Memphis) then sure, try it. What do you have to lose when you rarely if ever have a shot to compete for a title anyway? Plus, the “next greatest thing” freshmen give your program some exposure. But if you’re a program that should be able to get the best CBB players to supplement or improve your roster – which due to NIL and the free transfer rule will generally come from the transfer portal - then such a high risk gamble is neither necessary nor a smart strategy.
I think common sense and looking at the most successful programs tells us that the best roster building approach is striving every year for a combination of very good and solid returning players supplemented by a couple of the best transfers and a freshman or two who might be able to earn his way onto the floor.
I agree, but I think Cal in particular is better with elite Freshmen talent.
Our last deep run in the tourney was with a Freshman backcourt in ‘19 (Hagans, Herro, Johnson) and those guys weren’t top 5-10 recruits.
Last time we had three top 10-ish recruits was ‘17 (Fox, Monk, and Bam) and that team was a legit title contender that took the national champs to the wire despite terrible officiating.
I know it’s a different era, which is why I am tempering my expectations.
But in general I believe you need a balance in your roster. You need a strong core of returning players, add a few 5-star stud recruits, and finish the roster with portal guys.
Cal actually did a pretty decent job this offseason, IMHO.
He kept Reeves, Onyenso, and Thiero as a decent core of returnees. He added four 5-star stud recruits. He filled a hole with a portal guy in Mitchell.
And it sounds like he is going to add another portal player.
I think that’s a pretty balanced roster, though I would have liked to see a few more players return, but retention is very hard in this day and age with the portal and more pro opportunities than ever.
