5 Points at Birmingham used to be a pretty cool place with nice bars and restaurants, but it's been 20 years since I was there. Still nice? Looking for a weekend getaway place to take the Rebelette wife and do some "recruiting activities". Any help is appreciated.

BHam is nice. Underrated food scene in the city. Catch a show at Alabama Theater.

The best parts of Alabama, in particularly North Alabama, are the lakes. See if you can get a nice house around Lake Guntersville or Smith Lake.

I guess Birmingham will somewhat satisfy that, I think of it as in between Jackson and Memphis. Birmingham is plenty fun I guess, but if you are looking for a hotel/restaurant type getaway, you may as well go to Jackson. Let me put it this way, Birmingham is fun for Alabama people, but I don't see much that would attract John Doe from anywhere else.

There is a Westin downtown, with the Uptown district attached to it. You can google that, decent places there. There are lots of good restaurants here and there, but they are scattered about. The right out of college crowd hangs out in the Lakeview district, which is east of 5 points. Sloss Furnace is cool and has been upgraded. I hear about the race track but I've never been into that. Good hiking at Oak Mountain and a few other places.

If you're looking for a night out on the town in the the 'spot', I doubt you'll find it. You'll be better off in Memphis, New Orleans, Nashville or Atlanta. You can certainly have fun, though.

To answer your B'ham question, yes 5 points downtown is still the place and now has even more places within a few blocks. Stay on the Perimeter and Uber in.

There's plenty to do in Birmingham. Stay downtown at the Redmont Hotel on 5th Ave N. (cool heated rooftop bar), head over to the Avondale area (several good restaurants and a couple of cool bars + Avondale Brewery. Lakeview District a good restaurant called 5 and Slice pizza, Have a drink at The Garage (voted as one of the best bars in the US by Playboy a while back). You also have the Loft District on 1st and 2nd Ave N. a few good bars here as well as El Barrio (hip Mexican restaurant that's very good)

Things to do during the day, head over the mountain to Homewood and go by Steel City Pops for ice cream then drive around some of the cool neighborhoods. Head over to Mountain Brook and drive around English Village, Crestline Village (Smith's Variety) and Mountain Brook Village - nice areas to see as well with good restaurants. Also take a winding drive down Highland Ave. You can get a nice view of downtown Birmingham at sunset from the top of Vulcan. There's the Birmingham Museum of Art as well as Barber Motorsports Museum. Hop on a Zyp Bike (locations all over Birmingham) and ride over to Rail Road Park and then grab a beer at Good People Brewing Co.

White tablecloth dining Hot & Hot Fish Club, Bottaga, Highlands Bar & Grill, Gianmarco's

For live music Alabama Theater, Lyric Theater, WorkPlay, IronCity, Saturn and Tin Roof

Gian Marcos is one of my favorite restaurants. Sit in the back in the wine bar.

Originally from Vicksburg, lived in Silver City and Itta Bena as a kid. Moved back to Warren County to go to JH & HS in '81. Good memories growing up there...Delta is still my favorite part of the MS. Been in Birmingham for 20 yrs.

Honest....the whole delta area is a **** hole outside of the delta national forest, Leroy Percy ,lake Washington and catfish point.

Itta Bena nailed it. Avondale for dinner and drinks, then northside/loft district for the night. Carrigans, Redmont, the Collins Bar, etc.. that'll keep you away from the college crowd and more young professionals to adults. Lakeview is virtually UAB, Bama, and Auburn students place to go when they're back home, though I don't mind that scene at all.

The villages of Mountain Brook all have a local bar or pub such as Dram and Otey's but as a tourist, I'd recommend the Grand Bohemian.

5 Points in Southside offers some solid dinner options: Chez FonFon, Highlands Bar and Grill, Bottega, and Hot n Hot Fish club. There's an Oyster bar and a gourmet burger place called J Clyde there as well. My favorite restaurant in town may be Gianmarco's in Homewood. I had Italian 3 times in Boston's North End during our trip for the UMass game and Gianmarco's beat all of those to me.

Check out a brewery, Avondale, Cahaba, or Good People all have solid brews and a decent crowd.

Find live music at the places IttaBena mentioned.

Activities: Oak Mountain or Red Mountain provide solid hiking and sights. Vulcan gives great views of the city. Other than that, we'll have TopGolf soon, so that's cool.

If you're into adult entertainment, stay clear of Sammy's, the only decent option is the Furnace.

Stay downtown or at Uptown. Uber everywhere. City is coming up. I moved here from Memphis 3 years ago and much prefer Birmingham.

....and was the home course to some of the best golfers in the state for a number of years. Had some great times there....those folks used to roll hard.

Can't go wrong with anything Itta Bena or Forrest4Moore mentioned. Be sure to hit up Saw's BBQ when you're in town. As good as anything you'll get in Memphis.

There's a watch party for the OM game tomorrow night at The Beer Hog in Pelham. (112 Bowling Lane, Pelham, AL 35124)

I'll probably drop in for at least the first half before heading to Twin Peaks for the 2nd half.

Dang, all the way out in Pelham? Any idea why these events aren't actually in Birmingham but rather 20 minutes outside of town?

Yes, Sorry *** Wilson can make the Que. If you do get over here and get a chance to riding around, put your dial on 107.3 Mountain Radio. It's the best in the area and I think it's actually better than most satellite stations.
