YES John Calipari is worse. I know Dean Smith squandered a lot of talent. But his teams after his first 4 or 5 years at UNC was always good. His teams made the NCAA tournament his last 23 years in a row. And some of these years was when the NCAA tournament had only 48 teams. Calipari has had 2 of his UK teams miss the tournament altogether in the last 11 seasons.

I read an article in which Dean Smith said that he would have won more titles if he had not relaxed and enjoyed just making the FF.

Imagine if JC said that!?? UK fans would be burning him in effigy.

Also imagine if we found out that UK was running a diploma mill for the basketball program and providing all kinds of extra benefits and the whole university was covering it up!

2 titles, massive cheating, and great talent for 3 or 4 years, and he only won 2 titles! Smith is definitely still the king of failure.

Sad to say but Smith was a better coach overall.

Duh, YES.

Maybe we should consider that most of Cal's players never would come to UK, if they were going to have to stay more than a year. Cal promises that he can get them on the fast track to the NBA.
The seed is planted for one and done before they ever play a college game.

Dean Smith was from a different era when players rarely left school early. If you wanted to be drafted back then you had to build a career in college first. I wish it was still that way. Watching the Cats back in the 70's and 80's was so much better than it is today.

Just look how Smith won his 2 titles. The first one in 82 one of Georgetown’s players threw the ball to Worthy thinking that he was one of his own teammates. It was unforced and on the last possession. Who knows if they would have scored or not if they had gotten a shot. It was more of them throwing it away than UNCheats winning it. The second in 93 was the infamous Webber calling a timeout when they didn’t have any left. Who knows if Michigan would have scored or not on their last possession to win it. That game was more about Michigan blowing it than UNCheats winning it. However, Smith still had UNCheats contending for titles at the end of his career, while now Cal is not for Kentucky.
