I thought it was a good article. They did not mention the fact the Cal became the highest paid coach this year. I believe Coach K. held that spot for the last few years. I (may) be wrong about that. When compared to the coaches right behind Cal in pay, it is obvious that Cal is overpaid.

Free market. They're paid what they are worth. Lot more jobs than basketball coach are ludicrously over paid. A lot over paid way worse. At least most coaches work for the communities and give back on some way. Cal's salary shouldn't be a national worry.

Dumb time for this article. Yes the past few seasons and (SO FAR) this one have fallen short of expectations. But it’s the postseason now. Let’s see what Cal’s got. If you’re USA Today, you’d get a lot more clicks if Cal face plants in the tourney again than you will right at this moment.

He was already basically double the avg of top 20 coaches before the bump and lifetime contract (excluding K whose pay has been private but rumored to be above $10 as the end). That brings higher expectations which is part of that free market discussion. Stoops is going to have the same extra scrutiny.

He has the possibility of going down as the most underachieving College Basketball Coach of all time with the talent he had.

When calipari gets 37 years at a blue blood like Dean Smith and all his talented players 3 years and all his solid players 4 years then we can revisit this. Raw talent losing isn't the same as losing with experienced talent. I would have liked to see calipari get AD for 3 seasons like Smith did Jordan.

So many of them are overpaid, so it would be unfair to stick that label on him. Is one of the elite coaches? No, he isn't. He used to be an elite recruiter.

I wish people nationally would start putting the spotlight on Mitch.

Cal was just the salesman. Mitch is the guy who actually gave away the whole farm for magic beans.

Dean Smith is a good call lol, him and Cal are close, Cal blew the title with Rose, Camby, Wall, Randle, Booker & Towns, Fox & Monk, he's up there!

Cal blew the title to the ‘96 Cats???

Not a Cal fan but that’s over the top
I mean no title is gift wrapped but they clearly had a chance to win and they had already beaten them once, plus Camby was the best player on the Court.

When the highest paid state employee is a sports coach, something is wrong.
However,

It is impossible to calculate the value of the head coach at Kentucky. SEC venues average 20% more attendance when UK is in town, not to mention the increase in t-shirts and concessions. Every contract earned by SEC basketball was bolstered primarily by Kentucky's inclusion. This money would be there for anyone in charge here, but it happens to be John Calipari.
Then you add in the millions in charity work that Cal is responsible for and he is probably the biggest bargain in all of college basketball.

They are all overpaid! Contribute very little to society compared to other public servants and other college employees. NIL is now moving players into the overpaid.
Absolutely. It’s ridiculous what it has become. I read where Adolph Rupps salary translated to today’s financial equivalent would come out to about $80,000 a year .
