What will force Cal to bench Wheeler?

I assume he will be starting, but at what point does Calipari make him come off the bench? What will need to happen for Calipari to say enough is enough? Can’t make a deep run in March with a guard who cannot shoot a 15ft jumper and miss free throws.

I think Cal is too stubborn to make the change he needs to make, no matter what. But I do hope I'm wrong.

Has anyone ever gotten any insight into how the staff, as a whole, feel about Wheeler ??
Is the consensus that he should be our primary point guard. Certainly, players / line-ups are evaluated and discussed as a staff ... realizing Cal makes the final call.

I hope I am wrong but I think Cal is so blind to Wheeler that he would rather play him 30+minutes a game than bench him and win. 99% of the fanbase, local, state, regional, and national media and experts see it.

Not sure, have someone make up something…like a student said they were playing pick-up basketball at the student center and Wheeler slapped his ***. I think he should be held out until an investigation by the NCAA is completed.

He is getting completely benched, cal won’t do that. But I think cal and the staff can notice that effort along with playing the right lineup combos is what will help this team. Surely cal will notice wheeler should be down to 10-15 mins a night

I do think Wheeler is becoming the fan’s scapegoat here a little. I absolutely agree he is playing too many minutes, and putting the ball exclusively in his hands late in tight games is a problem. His play, specifically, is not losing games for this team though, IMO.

This is still a coaching issue. Just saying Wheeler doesn’t need to start and should only play 10-15 minutes doesn’t fix anything. Cal needs to have a game plan for each opponent and use this deep and talented roster to his advantage. You know, like I would think any coach in the HOF should be able to do.

A LITTLE? LOL this Wheeler thing is one of those things that leave me speechless . UK fans don't have a monopoly on stupidity but this is one of the more perplexing things especially when you realize how AWFUL his backup was against UT . A logical person realizes if Wheeler plays against UT we win easier not the other way around. The one thing I agree with though is Wheeler can't play at the expense of our 2 shooters playing together . They must be on the floor together .

That’s a good question OP.

Bottom line is, everyone is watching and that includes the media.

I suspect Cal will start and play Wheeler and I bet he changes how Wheeler plays, in an attempt to make the defense guard him.

I'm not sure how he will do that, but he is dedicated to playing Wheeler.

Cal's reputation is on the line here and I do believe he really wants to win. He has to know UK can't have anymore bad losses and in fact, UK has to go on a run. A loss tonight would be devastating.

But you know he's going to stick with Wheeler, win, lose, or draw and that’s sad.

What's worse is he's going to continue to play Livingston at the 3 and he's going to keep playing Collins and THAT is worse than playing Wheeler IMO

No…he’s not and I’m an expert on this. I was the one to blow the whistle on wheeler and took the punches I stayed true to what I saw and now 80-90% see it. As the last year and a half have gone by it’s become incredibly obvious what we have with wheeler. Fans have seen enough losing and want changes. The only thing that can be done right now is to bench the constant factor in the massive losing the last two seasons. Go back three seasons and there’s nothing we can do. However bench wheeler now bc Kentucky is not for everyone

He’s not playing bad. Just too many minutes.
I agree with this. Wheeler has a point of diminishing returns. He can most definitely help this team if he's playing about 20 min a game. But if he's your primary PG for 38 min, he can absolutely cost you games . It's not effort, he's just limited. The ONLY way I want him getting a huge chunk of dribbles is if we need to break a press. I don't want him running the half court sets.
