If this team plans on going on a deep run this March then they need to do something about Oscar guarding bigger players. It’s a weakness he has and if we run into Purdue or Arizona and many more teams then we will be in trouble. I really would like Cal to play Oscar at the 4 and Ugona at the 5 when we face teams like that. Knowing Cal though he will not do so.

We just beat the #5 team, aka the #1 defensive team in the country on their home floor.

What Oscar loses in the paint on defense, he more than makes up for with rebounding and it ain't close.

If we're worried about bigs, then Cal needs to get Ugonna up to speed now, but either way, we have advantages over teams like Arizona and Purdue also.

Purdue is not good on defense and I'll take our guards over theirs.

Arizona scores in transition mostly, well, that didn’t work against an awful WSU team @ Arizona and it didn’t work at Oregon, who was 7-8, but not quite as bad as WSU.

College ball is a guards game. You have to hit outside shots, not turn the ball over and hit free throws. Oscar will win his matchups more times than not.

Heck, Baylor won the title with a center that was only 6'5". KU won with a guy Oscar dominated. They won with guard play.

Lets simplify this. You have Wallace, Reeves, CJ, Toppin and Oscar on the floor. All of them have size, skill and are + players. Why on earth would you take any of them off the court to insert Wheeler? Somebody tell me why we would do that?

That lineup spreads defenses out, because all three guards can shoot at a high percentage and they can all defend their position. Heck, I go to Adou before I go to Wheeler.

But please, somebody make the argument for Wheeler over any of those 5 players.

He needs to develop Ugonna enough to provide serviceable minutes when teams attempt to go big against Oscar. It is crazy to have that kind of length on your bench and not figure out how to use it to your advantage.

Some of you do realize that Wheeler is shooting 38.5% from3, right? He’s not as big a liability from the outside as people make him out to be. No, he shouldn’t start and no, he shouldn’t play 30 mpg, but he has a role and will be needed at some point. It’s on Cal to make sure he puts others on the court that will maximize Wheeler’s skills and on Wheeler to not try and do too much.
