Interesting Wheeler shooting stats

Wheeler is a Julius Mays level player. Wouldn’t get any clock on the Kentucky teams I grew up with.
He plays more mins than anyone on the team including Oscar. He lead in mins. again Saturday with 39. Cal never wants to take him off the court I just don't get it. I know he finished with a bunch of assist but 3 came at the end with wide open runouts when it was over. Late in the second half they said he had 6 assist to 4 TOs at one point. This team isn't going anywhere if he plays 35+ mins. Now he can't even hit FTs.

Theiro played well at Mizzou but barely played in a blowout against Louisville. WTF? Limit Wheeler to at least 30 mins and let Theiro play at least 15+. I mean if I had it my way Wheeler wouldn't play more than 20.

If I had it my way he wouldn’t play 2 minutes. He provides ZERO positives to either side of the ball.

I won’t speak on the offensive side we all know how pitiful that is.

How many times a game does he put us in a scramble defensively due to giving up a blow by? I’d rather have Ryan Harrow running the 1 than this guy.

Same here I don't think he is a Kentucky caliber player but was being realistic. Hell he's playing 39 mins a game so half of that is wishful thinking as it is. We went from PGU to Georgia's leftovers. Some act like he's Ulis. The only reason he gets as many assist as he does is he cant shoot so he's forced to pass. I don't see any amazing passes either. They are pretty basic. I'm just not a fan. A backup fine. But not leading g the team in mins like he is.

I just cant get over the fact of how clueless he looks most of the time during the game. Anytime he makes a bad play or turnover and the camera cuts to him he honestly looks like he's thinking (in the best Kevin Hart voice in your head lol)...."Ok...Ok...that didn't go as planned. Not sure what I should have done, but I am pretty sure that wasn't right". Guy has a straight up Kevin Hart confused look.

Stats be damned , our eyeballs tell us he isnt very good and cant be counted on .. when did it become acceptable to be a horrific shooter and start at PG at the damn gold standard in college basketball ? at 5'9 ? When did that occur ? Dont say 2 years ago ... lol better question is why ? Why O Lord of the heavens is John Calapari fixated with Savir Wheeler ???????

If you do not even know the names of our players then you probably should not be posting about them.

Andre Ware was QB for the University of Houston back in the late 80's FYI.

1. If he can keep shooting above 35% 3pt....this alleviates many of the warts he has. I imagine the FT percentage will improve. He's always been a solid FT shooter.
2. But I totally agree with the comments for him to play 39 Min is dumb. To be honest, no college player at any school needs to play 38 min. You simply cant' play extremely hard for that long....you'll conserve energy, etc... and with Wheeler's issues....why play him so much when you have other options.

Cal is mind boggling with his thought process. You can easily push Theiro another 10 min, Frederick when he's back, etc...but instead you play a 5'8 PG the entire game.

Worst part about it is we had a pretty comfortable lead . It’s not like we were in a back and forth dogfight . Truly mind boggling to have most of the starting lineup play in the upper 30s.

Ill say it again, who are you playing over him? Im good with moving Cason to point a significant portion of the time but no one behind him has even come close to beating him out. He and Wallace should both play 30 minutes a game right now.

Wheeler is not a bucket.
Very true. He is a cog. If all of the main machinery around him is good, he can be an important piece that makes the machine work. But most of this season we've had defective parts at the 3 & 4 positions, and if Wheeler the cog tries to do more than what he's capable of, good things do not happen.

Well, I've defended him all along, might as well keep on. Sometimes I think folks here share a brain. Some posted basically "facts be damned, we know what we 'see'!" That sums up this thread and the incessant attacks on our starting point guard. Wheeler shooting nearly 39% from 3 means he is keeping defenses honest. That's what we need from him out there. Aside from this, he is currently #18 nationally in assist rate. Do I want him playing 39 minutes? No. But he's much better than what some of you apparently blind people can see. Unlike the opinions expressed in this thread, mine is actually based on facts. That's all I'm gonna say here until someone actually says something factual to refute it.

Why can’t someone play hard for 38 minutes? If games were 30 minutes long could they not play hard for 28 minutes?

40 minutes is an arbitrary number. There is nothing I know of that says you can’t play hard for all 40. BTW it’s 40 minutes spread over 2 hours.

Well I've pointed out your condescending comments ALL ALONG , I guess I'll continue . Why dont you just call everyone that disagrees with you dumb asses .. thats what I " see". Thats was about as nice as I could make this post . Stating Wheeler is keeping defenses honest ? Do you understand they are RUNNING FROM HIM ? Thats a fact for you .

Hate to break the news to you but losing a third of our games so far is a lot. Especially when all 4 losses are against the only 4 good teams we have played.🙄

^^ That stat compilation is simply not good . His previous three year averages tell us pretty much what we are going to get .. 6-7 assist to 3 TO's FG% around 43-44 3pt FG about 30% . about 70% from the line . At 5'9 he is not a great facilitator , you either have to surround him with studs or at least 2 GREAT scores or your team isnt doing to do squat . Its not the kids fault entirely , he gives it his all , its Cal's for insisting he start and play 32 plus min a game instead of about 20 .. he's a good spark when needed , but Wallace should have been playing the 1 about many games ago . With SW our ceiling is set in stone and its not the FF .

Well in NBA they have pretty much rotations like clockwork to maximize energy level throughout a game.

20 minutes without a break is among time in basketball game where sprinting, jumping, in a defensive crouch, etc. takes your legs The best players need a 4 min break per half

7 assist a game tells a different story than him not being a great facilitator. He most definitely dribbles to much at times and force shoots/passes but this team is best when he’s on the floor and will go where SW and toppin take them. 26-27 mins a game is where he needs to be right now. If we could get consistent play from the other guards not name Wallace then maybe u cut him back to 23/24 mins but if reeves and Fredrick are not hitting shots we can’t play them because they can’t guard you and I

I cant argue that too much .. I think this team would be on a different trajectory if Cal would have pushed Wallace at the PG earlier and ran an offense more compatible with both Reeves and Fred's strengths . water under the bridge now , Fred's head is gone , Reeves is totally up / down and we cant seem to come to conclusion Livingston should be a 4 and play him and quit giving minutes away to Ware .

I tell you what Dan. I'll stop being condescending when you guys start telling the truth about Wheeler. How about tonight? 11 points, 3-5 from three, 9 assists, 6 rebounds, 2 turnovers. My only complaint on him tonight is missing the front end of that one and one. He's gotta make free throws and he has historically made them pretty well, but not this year. Still, we don't win this game without him. He's now #17 in the nation in assist rate.

But hey, I didn't call anyone a dumba**. That is your word. But hey, if that's what you think I'm not arguing.

Look Dan, here's the deal: Wheeler has his limitations, I've never denied it. He is 5-9 and he struggles with size, offensively and defensively. He has not shot the ball well from 3 historically. I said from the start of the season, he's got to make a decent percentage out there because he will be open. He's got to keep defenses honest and make them pay for leaving him. In my estimation, that means he's got to make 33% or better. Right now, you may want to ignore this stat by the way, he has made 15-36 from 3 on the season for 41.7%.

But here's the bottom line for me: I don't expect anyone here to sing his praises. I know that will never happen here because you guys have already cast your die and your pride is now on the line, gotta save face, facts be damned. But here is the truth- he doesn't deserve to be dogged the way he gets dogged on this board.

And hey, by the way, I was frustrated tonight that he kept being the guy with the ball in his hands as the shot clock ran down at the end. I was saying Wallace needs the ball or get it to Oscar. But the other guys kept refusing to make plays and kept giving it back to Wheeler. What can he do other than try to make a late play? Wallace made a great play near the end.

But hey, if you think you'll talk me into submission you got another thing coming. I'm right on this. Period. The numbers back me up. He's not superman and he has flaws but he doesn't suck like many here talk. That's what got my reaction. Just read this idiotic thread again and tell me these are apt descriptions of Wheeler. It's ridiculous.

Haven't had a point guard since Maxey. Askew, Washington and Wheeler are not the guards UK is gonna win with. Cason is good but doesn't force anything which leaves Wheeler on a island alot having to create with only seconds left to shoot. Cal wants Wheeler to be Ulis so bad he went and got Tyler and made him feel sorry enough for him to join staff.

After the LSU game, Wheeler is shooting 42% from three and Reeves is shooting 40% from three. Hope Wheeler can continue to be effective from 3 and start hitting free throws

Totally agree. Wheeler is now 2nd on the team in 3pt percentage behind only Wallace. He has made 15-36. Thiero is at 50% but only has 4 attempts.

He MUST start making free throws. He shot 78% last season and has been 70% or better for his entire career, but he's at 62.5% this season, which is unacceptable for a point guard. He's in his own head right now, I have no doubt.
