Say we pay the buyout...

Who are we going to hire that would be worth paying that amount and that we could realistically afford to hire? A $48 million buyout plus another $15 - 20 million minimum for a contract for a good new coach is putting us near $70 million.

Realistically, who is worth that now that would be able to get the results we want?

I hear the names like Oats, Musselman and Lloyd, but none of them have won anything. 2 of those 3 have never been past the sw16, and I highly doubt Lloyd is leaving AZ.

Beard was a name that had some traction, but aside from maybe MMA coaching, he is obviously not getting hired anywhere anytime soon.

Some people seem keen on Scott Drew, but I don’t realistically see him leaving Baylor and he hasn't exactly been top notch either. Looking over his resume, outside of 2020, he hasn't been past the SW16 one other time since 2012. The only other time was in 2009. Going past the Sw16 3 times in 20 years isn't going to do it for most UK fans.

Occasionally you hear someone toss out Pitino's name, but I highly doubt that would ever legitimately be considered by the administration. Not to mention he isn't close to the coach he was in the 80's and 90's.

My thought isn't so much on keeping Cal as it is finding someone we can look at their resume and justify paying nearly $70 mil to make it happen. Because paying that and not getting any better results or potentially worse would be crippling to the program. Far more so than now.

This scenario in no way will happen, but Lloyd would be the best option. I don't know why you think he wouldn't leave AZ? I live in Phoenix, but you don't hear anything about him outside of Tucson. He hasn't even completed his 2nd year at a non-blue blood. Not sure why you don't think he'd jump at Kentucky if they came calling. But the problem is: by the time Mitch/UK actually realize it's time to make a move, guys like him or Musselman will be much more entrenched where they're at. A guy like Mark Few would've been much more likely to leave Gonzaga after year 3 then he is now

There are only a handful of coaches actively coaching who have won a NC much less more than one and we know whomever we look at will lose another game and lose another tourney game and maybe to a lesser quality team. That is ok since the likes of RP, Coach K, Bill Self, Roy Williams, etc have done so. Cal had not won a NC before coming to Kentucky. I want someone who plays a style of basketball that is entertaining, who wins consistently and in the hunt for NC every year (knowing we won't win it every year). Any of the coaches you mentioned I am ok with (minus Beard and RP). I would even throw in Pearl.

To the 2nd rd? Not to mention he is in his 5th year at Uconn. That's a pretty solid program to need 5 years to get past the 1st rd of the tournament. Going to need a lot more to get behind hin.
I get it. You want Phil Jackson or maybe we can dig up Wooden. You want an established coach that has won championships. Not gonna happen. Hurley would kill it here with our resources.

Lol, you jumped to that simply because I think a guy who has not been out of the 2nd rd in his 11 yr career isn't the person we should blow nearly $70 million on? 🤣

UCONN is essentially a blueblood, and, so far, he hasn't been out of the 1st rd there.

Get a grip!

You are going to shoot down every single candidate, so I don't see the point. Someone has to have a title to be worth it? How many titles did Pitino, Tubby, or Cal have when they got here?

"They haven't won anything" is a weak argument

You guys throw this buyout number like you know what it actually is. UK would end up paying far less and likely cal would resign to save face and take another job. 2 years salary is what he would end up with.

Same with Roy before unc and self before ku and so on. The programs do more for the coach than peipme think.

They do? Where has anyone said they had to win a title first? Why do you just make **** up when you can't formulate a good argument?

Pitino and Cal both had final fours and solid track records. Both had also been NBA head coaches. Not just SW16's or less. Smith was a bad hire. Outside of Pitino's leftover team, he never accomplished much. That proves the point.

Buyout or not, the next UK HC isn't likely to earn what John Calipari did in the beginning of their contract.

Probably get something like 4 years and 25-30 million tops. Highly unlikely they'll get 70m.

Make Billy Donovan and Brad Steven's say no first. If they do, in no particular order, Drew, Musselman, Lloyd, Oates, Hurley, Sean Miller, Holtmann.

Would Steve Nash be a candidate. Funny just typing it.
I’ve mentioned this and I doubt it’s on Mitch’s radar but Nash would be my wild card/high risk-high reward call if Stevens, Drew, Muss, Lloyd, Oats all say no.

He’s a HOFer so he’d get instant respect in any players house the second he walked in. Household name. And when you call you let him know the position is his if he’s be willing to run the “7 sec or less” Suns offensive system that he was the PG for in the early 2000s. (DAntoni system)

You could do a lot worse than Steve Nash on your sidelines especially if you were about to have to hire a retread old coach or a relatively non splash hire.

The other option is to call Pitino, tell him you’re only offering 1-2m a year, 5year max with a buyout option at 3) but what you can offer is worth more than money…a chance to go out on top, rewrite his ending…his come full circle redemption story…and retire in 5 years having redeemed his Kentucky legacy…Camelot. Basically you’d be offering him redemption and getting a good ROI financially to help eat Cals contract. And RP would drool at the thought of coming in and succeeding as an FU to Cal

He could end up being good, but chasing every flash in pan when we're desperate is how we ended up with BCG. I only want Cal gone if we fire Mitch first bc I'm confident Mitch would find us someone even worse than Cal
First you find out if he drinks.
