That's what I gave you. Those are the names that I would go through.

No, he had 2. Did he not coach in the 1996 F4 and the 2008 F4?

OMG, are you F'ing stupid? I was referring to the vacating of the wins and title at Memphis. That occurred after he got hired at UK.

You literally have no idea what you're talking about do you? This has all spawned from me calling out your ignorance on Bama and their 3pt attempts not dropping from last season. Now you're just arguing to try to win a point or something. Dude, seek help!
WTF are you talking about? His 2008 season and final 4 were vacated and the investigation took place before he left memphis. Don't play coy on this. He knew Rose was ineligible, but keep playing dumb. UK knew what was happening too, they all knew that season was going to get axed.

Okay, so your list of coaches is the same as everyone elses. All you have done is **** on Nate Oats in this thread, but then he appears on your list… .but you have the gall to say I have no idea what I'm talking about. Hilarious.

You said his F4/Runner-up was vacated and he had none when UK hired him. That is false. Memphis didn't have their title vacated until August of 2009. Several months after he was hired at UK. The NCAA also further stated that they had no evidence Cal had knowledge or was complicit. Again, why lie?

You seem to be confused...yet again. My list isn't people I would offer or hire, just coaches you look at. I stated clearly for each why after looking at them I wouldn't hire them.

Maybe Oats knocks it out of the park over the next 3 - 4 years and things change, but as of now, he wouldn't get an interview. Let alone an offer.

You don't have any idea what you're talking about. It's why you keep throwing out claims that have no factual support and getting upset when called out for them.
Okay, so you still haven't posted your list. You said you did, but now you're saying you didn't.

Who
Is
On
YOUR
List
?

It really doesn't matter that Cal was cleared of all wrong doing, the seasons never took place, he can't claim final 4's that didn’t happen.

UK and Cal knew the investigation was happening in 2009 when Cal took the job and they knew that season was going to be vacated. We all knew, except you I guess.

Where did I say I didn't?

My list of offers:

If any of the initial list I provided are interested, you offer them. If not, I go with Few, Bennett, Musselman, Pearl and Drew.

The actual list of those that matter is Holtmann and Pope. Which is awful, IMO.

Well, sure it does. It means he wasn't cheating.

I seem to remember watching it. I don't know how that it possible if it didn't take place.

Can you provide evidence that UK knew of the punishment ahead of time? I would love to see this.

I never said Cal did, or didn't cheat, this discussion was never about that, so I don't know why you're concerned with Cal's reputation. It was about Cal's credentials when he took the job and in April 2009, everybody and their mother knew that Memphis was being investigated in the Derrick Rose situation.

So your list is:
Mark Few (laughable)
Bennett (laughable)
Pearl (talk about a bad idea)
Drew (same guy on my list that everyone ***** on).

Somehow you think these guys are better than Oats? Isn't Few 0-2 against Oats?

Who the hell would want Bennett here? This would be worse tgan Tubby.

Bruce Pearl will never get an offer to take this job and the guy is too damn old anyway.

Looking at this list, I don't understand how you think Oats is a bad hire. But to each their own.

You said Cal knew he was playing an ineligible player. That would be cheating.

Ok, so prove this. I provided evidence they didn't, so provide yours that shows otherwise.

Why are Few and Bennett laughable? Few has a couple of runner-up and 2 additional E8's in the last 7 years, right? What's Oats got?

Bennett won a title recently, correct?

Pearl probably won't, but you asked who was on my list. Not UK's. remember?

Drew certainly isn't a top-choice, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

Oats is a horrible hire. What is his best finish?
No, I said the investigation into Rose was happening prior to Cal taking the UK job. He knew, at that time… .after the season was over, that Memphis was in trouble. I never said he cheated. Although, I find it hard to believe he didn’t know some of the things that happened in the Rose and Camby cases.

Bennet is laughable, because nobody in this fanbase wants a coach here that plays games in the 50's. Nobody, except you.

Mark Few just got caught drunk driving, had his hat on backwards looking like a teenager and is not leaving Washington.

Bruce Pearl, I love the system and his passion, but he has a show cause on his record and trouble seems to find him. He was on my list at one point, not any longer.

And just stop with Chris Holtman, wow, talk about a very bland and very average coach, no thank you.

Drew is on my list and I'm good with Lloyd too, but, like Oats, he hasn't accomplished anything yet.

Seriously, your list sucks, I mean that in the nicest way possible.

Beard would be the realistic hire I’d take a risk on over 6 years. Young, hungry, proven winner at horrible programs, and would provide the energy we need.

I don’t care about styles at this point we long as it’s not Tony Bennett and we win.
Agreed, we need some of that Aggressive hard nosed energy

Oats and Hurley have never made it past the S16, if that’s who we are looking at we are in trouble. Much rather go with Scott Drew, Pearl, Donovan, and guys like that before I start to look at Oats and Hurley. Would definitely take Lloyd over the 2 as well

Here you said he came here with 2 vacated seasons, no final 4's. Neither claim is true.

Again, if it wasn't vacated until August of 2009 and Cal was Hired in April 2009, how is this possible?

Here you say he knew Rose was ineligible. Based on what? Please provide something to support this claim.

Also, if he played Rose while knowing, that is cheating. So, yes, you are saying he cheated.

Can you please provide evidence that UK knew?

Again, please provide your evidence to support this.

According to your post above, you said Cal knew Rose was ineligible and played him anyway. That is cheating.

Again, can you please provide your evidence of these claims that UK knew or "everybody" for that matter?

Of course you said he cheated when you said he knew Rose was ineligible and played him anyway. That would be cheating.

UVA is averaging 72 ppg. They also give up only 58. They're outdoing us and Bama in Offensive Effencieny as they rank 11th. They are also currently ranked 2nd nationally with wins over the #5 and #19 ranked teams. That's something you would be dissatisfied with?

What does a year old DUI and backwards hat have to do with his coaching ability?

I don't want Holtmann. I am just telling you who Mitch's first choice would be.

Your list is similar names to mine. The difference is I am advocating for proven guys with F4's and championships. You're advocating for a guy with 1 sw16.
I said he knew Rose was ineligible AFTER the season. He definitely realized it during the investigation. That’s what I'm saying.

He literally had a phone conversation with Rose and told him to just concentrate on his nba stuff, don't even talk to the ncaa. Meznwhile, Memphis took the fall. Cal is such a nice guy, isn't he?

Nowhere did I say Cal knew Rose was ineligible BEFORE the season.

Are you seriously denying that nobody knew about the Rose investigation prior to UK offering Cal the job?

It’s funny how Cal finds a way out of these sticky situations once he finds out the NCAA is sniffing around. He left UMass the same way too, in ruins. He's turning UK into a pile of rubble too, he’s just doing it a different way.

Are you sure your name isn't 'Brad', you sure are working really hard to defend your daddy.

Pearl has a show cause on his record and a pretty checkered past, why is he on your list?

Donovan turned us down twice, no way UK offers him a 3rd time. We would look like that crazy chick that doesn't know how to just go away.

You would take Lloyd over Oats and Hurley, but you say you wouldn't take Oats and Hurley, because they haven't made it past the sweet 16 yet. Neither has Lloyd.

I get it, Nate Oats and Hurley haven’t made it past the sweet 16, but do you honestly think they can't? Jay Wright, Scott Drew and Tony Bennett all struggled with that too, until they didn't.

1. Cal had a checkered past when he was hired. Self just won a chip and isnt being punished even after coutnless violations. No one cares about any of that stuff this day and age, plus, what Pearl did was minuscule in comparison.
2. Lloyd has coached 1 year in CBB and has already garned a 1 seed along with every coach of the year award that season, along making it to the S16. Oats has been a coach for 7 years and has made it once. Lloyd system is also going to be way more sustainable when it comes to a 1AD tourney.
3. And am I missing something about Hurley? Has been at Uconn (which is a very good basketball school) for 4 years and hasnt made it out of the first round while not even making the tourney for 2 of those years.

Oats and Hurley (maybe) definitely can make it out of the S16 but hiring a guy under the premise of "his results werent great here but he was at _______ small school, imagine what he could do at UK" is a very dangerous game and one I would not be comfortable to play as I would want to go after someone more proven.

That seems really weird considering the investigation be the NCAA didn't even start until after Rose had left. NCAA didn't even send notice of the allegations until JAN 2009. So how was Cal supposed to know about it?

"Nowhere did I say Cal knew Rose was ineligible BEFORE the season." You said he knew and played him during the seaon. Yet, you have provided no evidence of this.

I provided you a link to an archived article where it was allegedly never discussed. It talks about how Cal and the Memphis AD kept it under wraps until they met with the committee in June. So, yea, I think it's very possible. However, since Cal was proven to be complicit in either, I doubt they cared much either way.

Why wouldn't the NCAA punish him if they thought he was in the wrong? They have actually gone out of their way to exonerate Cal.

Why is it you think someone being honest and factual is somehow a Cal defender or supporter? I don't mind a change at all, but I don't get making up lies and misinformation in the process. Just seems weird to me.

Still waiting on the evidence I asked for.
I'm starting to wonder if you're actually reading my posts.

I'm talking about Cal's record and what UK knew during the hiring process (they knew about the UMass vacation and they most certainly knew there was a very serious issue with Cal's 2008 final four and that it was most likely going to be vacated).

But you are arguing about Cal's reputation and you keep accusing me of calling him a cheater.

This has nothing to do with Cal cheating, that’s not what the discussion is about. We all know the NCAA cleared D R… .twice, so they really screwed Memphis over, even though it’s pretty obvious Rose had his brother take the test.

I never said Cal knew Rose was ineligible prior to the season, yet still played him. Just like most of the post I quoted here, you're wrong. You are obviously misinterpreting something… .again.

What does Pearl's show clause prevent him from doing now?

Donovan also wanted to go to the NBA when he turned us down. Since he has done that and hasn't had much success, maybe he has had a change of heart. Why are you afraid to ask? Contacting him behind closed doors, through an agent isn't going to get much public ridicule if he says no. Not many will know.

Lloyd has only been coaching 1 year. So there is a bit of a difference. Hurley has been coaching 11 and has yet to make a sw16. That's concerning. Oats has been coaching 7 and has 1.

Until they have, why should we think otherwise?
LMAO, Donovan has told us no twice, he wasn't on line to go to the NBA the first time. His open window with UK has been shut.

You’re talking about Hurley coaching 11 years, but damn, look where he's been coaching. How are you going to win a title at Rhode Island???

It’s funny how you have rules for Oats and Hurley, but you'll set those rules aside for Lloyd.

Seriously, Bruce Pearl? If you think UK is going to offer him the head coaching position, with his record, you're off your rocker. That ain't happening. This is another guy you're willing to set your rules aside for while you trash my list of coaches that have kept their names clean.

Heck, you should be adding Kelvin Sampson if you're going to add Pearl. Sampson is the better coach.

Meh, Kansas didn’t hire Self AFTER the adidas thing, that’s not the same thing.

Yeah, Hurley has been at UConn 4 years, but that program was in shambles when he took it over. Look at what he has done to rebuild it. Remember, UConn ain’t no Kentucky.

Like I said to Lead Belly, UK will not even consider Pearl. I love Pearl's style of play and passion, he was on my list for a while too, but UK won't offer him.

Yeah, Cal's reoutation wasn't squeaky clean, but it was more about him being a jerk to everyone, he didn't have a show cause on his record.

What am I not reading?

Sure they knew about Umass. That was in 1996. Memphis' investigation was in early 2009. It wasn't even released publicly until June. You keep saying UK knew, but you can't provide a shred of evidence that they knew. In fact, you proved you didn't even know the timeline when you suggested Cal knew while Rose was playing.

You do keep suggesting Cal is a cheater every time you claimed he knew about Rose and played him anyway. That would be cheating, but it didn't happen like that.

You said Cal knew during the season and played him anyway.

Why do you make up arguments that never happened? It's so weird.
OMG, read this slowly:

I NEVER SAID CAL KNEW ROSE CHEATED AND JUST PLAYED HIM. I NEVER SAID CAL CHEATED.

Holy **** man, I've explained this to you multiple times now, you're just ignoring what I'm saying.

What I said was, Cal knew about the investigation and knew there was a real chance Rose was going to be ruled ineligibke and tgat fact is just that… .a fact.

A simple google search proves my point. Cal, Memphis and UK kept the investigation quiet until the June 6th hearing.

Memphis allegations center on former star Derrick Rose

"In a written statement, Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart said Kentucky had "talked with several people and thoroughly exercised due diligence during the process of hiring coach Calipari.""

This is what I'm talking about. He came to UK knowing he very well had a serious issue that was likely to result in a second vacated season. Never did I call him a cheater.

You insinuated he did.

Sure, Cal knew about the investigation. I have already said that he and the AD knew for a while and kept it under wraps. That's why UK didn't know.

This also begs the question of whether Kentucky understood the extent of the inquiry before hiring Calipari.

"He was very forthright in the interview process," Kentucky president Dr. Lee Todd Todd said of Calipari. "We're fine with him."

In a written statement, Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart said Kentucky had "talked with several people and thoroughly exercised due diligence during the process of hiring coach Calipari."

Kentucky's due diligence, however, apparently didn't include a conversation with Johnson about the pending allegations.

"I'm trying to remember. I don't know. The only one I talked to at Kentucky was (Barnhart), and I don't think that we talked about it," Johnson said.

It's highly common for universities to publicly announce an investigation and then release information about a pending NCAA charge within a few weeks of receiving a letter like the one Memphis received.

Johnson, however, said, "Talking about it publicly, I don't know that that really gains anything. We're not trying to hide anything. We're trying to be as efficient as possible."
First if all, no, I did not insinuate Cal cheated, not one time did I say anything remotely close to insinuating he knew Rose didn’t take the SAT prior to the season. I literally never said, or implied that.

As for the rest of your post where you quoted the article I posted… .what's your point? Barnharts comments literally tell you that UK knew about the issue during the hiring process, which is what I have been saying.

Sure you did. You have claimed multiple times he knew! If he knew, then he had to know when he was playing him. Otherwise, he didn't know and found out like everyone else. It can't be both. You also said you found it hard to believe he didn't know about both the Camby and Rose situations. Which means you think he lied about both. Again, that infers he cheated.

The point is according to the Memphis AD, UK, Lee Todd and Barnhart were never told about it. Barnhart's statement certainly don't suggest he knew about it.

Nothing here indicates they knew about the Memphis/Rose ordeal. Particularly since it didn't come to light until a few weeks later.
No, I did not say Cal Knew BEFORE the season, but I did say he knew about the allegations during the UK hiring process, which he did.

I also said I find it hard to believe Cal didn’t know something was up in both cases. Camby was flaunting his new found money all over campus and Rose felt the need to go all the way to Philadelphia… from Chicago, to take the SAT, which he failed multiple times to that point. So, come on now, he had to know something funny happened.

Lol, sure you did. You just did it again in the post.

"I also said I find it hard to believe Cal didn’t know something was up in both cases. Hint: This is saying you think Cal cheated in playing 2 players he suspected of wrongdoing that would make them ineligible.

It doesn't get anymore cut and dry.

Of course he knew during the hiring process. Who argued otherwise? That doesn't mean UK, Barnhard or Todd knew at the time. It doesn't mean Cal knew anything when they were playing. It also doesn't magically mean Cal didn't coach those games or his teams didn't win them.

This whole argument has been pointless and so off-point, which is what you do when people point out your flawed information.
No, it's not saying Cal cheated, what it IS saying is, I find it hard to believe, as in, "it is my opinion that Cal should have seen the red flags that were there in both cases". That’s not accusing him of outright cheating.

Noce try though

No, it means he ignored the red flags. It’s really that simple.

It

It would be hard to find a coach that Cal is not better than. But let's focus on the two that are the flavor of the month in this thread.

Neither are in the HoF, nor ever will be. Neither has taken a team to a FF. Odds are they never will. Neither has an NC. Neither has an NIT championship. Again, neither has even one FF, Cal has taken 3 schools to the FF and has 6 total.

If either of those guys were coaching UK the fanbase would be running them out of town.

And the difference is not recruiting. We only have 1 sure fire 1st round pick on our team. How many do they have? I doubt our starting point guard could even play for those teams. Our starting 4 for sure couldn't. He came to us from Rhode Island.

Yet Cal coached last year's team to a 2 seed. Blew out UNC, Kansas and Tenn along the way. What did the two coaches of the month do last year? Let's see who goes further this year. But there will be other flavors pop up before then.
Recruiting is 70-75% of coaching. Cal has been better at it than anyone during his tenure at UK.

He simply cannot coach offense. He’s in the bottom 10% in Xs and Os. Maybe I should say doesn’t want to instead of cannot. But that’s not clear.

As for KU and UNC last year which folks like to bring up, the opposing coaches tried running with the Cats thinking they were as good athletically and could just run their system.

Most coaches try to make it a half court game and ultimately can compete with UK that way. That’s OK with Cal which is a huge problem. It’s why his teams are not doing well against ranked teams in recent years. That is not going to change despite Cal still being able to recruit top classes.

Not a particular fan of Oats or Hurley or anyone else. I think Bennett probably is the best Xs and Os guy frequently mentioned on this site as a a potential future coach.

All these coaches being brought up, are easily capable of getting to the FF and not just some fluke run either.. They all run good systems, they all have experience, they're all hungry, but they're all at schools that are tough to win at.

How do you get top shelf kids to Rhode Island, Buffalo, Alabama, or Baylor?

Heck, I don't even want a guy that depends on getting top shelf kids, all that does is create a situation where we have a brand new team every year and that’s not going to work.

Give me a coach that wants to buikd a team over a period of time and mix in one or two top shelf kids. I'm so done with this NBA farm system stuff.

So bama has taken 39 shots so far tonight. 20 of them have been 3's. They are 35% for the night. However, they have taken 19 2pt shots and made 11 for 58%. They have also gotten fould 19 times, almost all when attacking the rim. Why in the hell wouldn't they attack the rim more instead of jacking 3's? Particularly if Oats has changed Philosophies as you ignorantly claimed?

A lot of those 3's are coming off offensive rebounds and just like what Cal says, when you're open, shoot the ball.

Every time Memphis closes to within a bucket, Alabama hits another 3.

I just saw Alabama miss three layups, was it worth it for them to pass on a 3 pointer, to go try to get a bucket that is only 2 points, only to miss?

Is 3 greater than 2, or no?

Okay, so I just looked and only 1 3pt shot was made by Bama after an offensive board. That was at 5:04 in the first. That's the only one I see attempted after an offensive board. So where did you come up with this statement? Did you imagine you saw that or did you lie again?

You're using one possession when the game shows they are 20% more likely to score from 2. As well as considerably more likely to get fouled and shoot FT's.

22 of their 42 shots are currently from 3. That's over half. And they only avg like 34% as a team. That's beyond stupid.
So only one 3 point shot was "made" after an offensive rebound? Where did I say "made"? The best time to TAKE a 3 pointer, is after an offensive rebound.

Again, I would rather take an open 3 pointer, then force the ball into the paint and get challenged at the rim by 2 guys… for a possible basket that is less than you get if you just take the open 3.

I don't know what the 2pt fg % is for Bama, but I bet it's not all that stellar either.

Dude, I still only see one of those attempted after an offensive board. Where did all the ones you saw happen at?

That's probably one of many reasons you don't coach basketball for a living.

It's about 55%. That's pretty good. And they have been getting fouled a lot when they attack the paint.
Seems like every time alabama passes up an open 3 and tries to force it inside, they get stuffed at the rim, or miss a layup, tgen it's an easy 2 points at the other end.

But you're acting like Alabama is JUST shooting 3's, they're not.

I don't see you coaching either.

They shot 59% from 2 and 37% from 3. So 22% higher from 2.

27 of their 54 shots were from 3. So half of their offense came from shots that they were 22% less likely to make. Not to mention less likely to get fouled on.

They ended up winning by 3 against Memphis at home.

Attack the paint and you win by a lot more.

I used to coach.

I see why you "used" to coach. You haven't figured out that 3>2, no wonder you like Cal so much.

You have to shoot a much greater percentage from 2 to equal what you can get from 3 point range, it's that simple.

Alabama shot 27 total 3's in a high possession game. I don't think that's terrible at all. If I was coaching, I would not want to see more than 25 attempts, but it's not like 27 is a crazy amount.

I'll say this, only taking 11-15 threes is just bad, that's what we have attempted in several games this year, with 3 elite shooters on the squad and the paint jam packed.

It's really not like that in basketball though.

This is why it's easy to tell you don't have a lot of experience with basketball. Well, that and the fact you didn't know how to read game
stats either.

The issue with jacking up 3's is they tend to be long rebounds, which allows the other team to get out in transition and score easier and quicker. So, 17 missed threes gives the opposing team 17 easier chances to score. If they connect on 5 of those 17, that negates the extra points you made on 3's. That means they only need to convert on 29% of those.

It wasn't a high possession game for Bama though. They only took 54 shots compared to 79 for memphis. 27 of those 54 were from 3. That's half! So, yea, that's a very crazy amount of 3's. Particularly for a team that doesn't shoot them at a high %.

Do you want Wheeler jacking up a bunch of 3's? He currently shoots around the same % as Bama does as a team.

Not at all if they are smart shots. Just jacking up 3's makes no sense and it's why everyone knows a Nate Oats team will never make it far. You can't be that reliant on the 3 for 6 straight games in a tournament setting.
